The American Society of Magical Negroes satirizes an age-old Hollywood trope with clever humor and pointed social commentary in a Harry Potter-esque narrative. The critical term "magical negro" was popularized by filmmaker Spike Lee. It refers to a stereotypical Black supporting character who only exists to help the white protagonist achieve their goals. Classic examples are Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, and The Legend of Bagger Vance.
Justice Smith stars as Aren, a Black yarn artist who's mistaken as a waiter by a white man at his gallery opening. But instead of taking offense, Aren dutifully fetches a cocktail. Roger (David Alan Grier) notices this interaction. He invites Aren to join The American Society of Magical Negroes, a secret organization that has existed since Jefferson's presidency with a singular goal: help, support, and soothe white people so that Blacks won't get killed.
Nicole Byer co-stars as Dede, leader of the society.

The movie cleverly satirizes Hollywood's harmful racial stereotypes with a whimsical touch and big ambitions. The narrative loses momentum in the third act, covering too much and diluting its efficacy. There is bold creativity in how the film addresses divisive themes, though, sparking important conversations with a unique approach.
A meek Black artist, who's always submissive when interacting with whites, joins a secret organization that protects Black people from racial violence. The American Society of Magical Negroes cleverly satirizes an age-old Hollywood trope before running out of steam in a somewhat labored third act. The term "magical negro" was brought into the mainstream by filmmaker Spike Lee and criticizes the Hollywood trope of stereotypical Black supporting characters that exists solely to help a white protagonist achieve their goals. Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, and The Legend of Bagger Vance are classic examples.

The films vying for the 2024 Best Sound Oscar are “The Creator,” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) will prevail, followed in order of likelihood by “The Zone of Interest” (37/10), “Maestro” (9/2), “Mission: Impossible” (9/2), and “The Creator” (9/2).
This year’s Best Sound award will be the fourth handed out since the former Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories were consolidated ahead of the 93rd Oscars. The 17 craftspeople involved in this race have collectively amassed 70 previous nominations and 16 wins for their audio work, with the largest share of those bids (30%) belonging to Kevin O’Connell (“Oppenheimer”). With an Oscars resume dating back to 1984, he stands as one of this lineup’s nine returning champions, having memorably broken his unprecedented losing streak on his 21st bid for “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017).

Tom Hanks is one of the most celebrated actors of his generation and possibly the most beloved American movie star from the second half of the 20th century. Over his four decades in Hollywood, he's proven himself capable of completely disappearing into a variety of roles across both comedy and drama.
Yet whatever role Hanks is playing, his reassuring warmness can always be felt emanating off the screen. Likeability can be a poisonous term in Hollywood, but Hanks has always had an uncanny ability to find the soul of his characters and present it completely openly on screen in a way that audiences can't help but root for. He's more than an actor; he's an American institution, and Hollywood would look very different without him.

Coffey's willingness to accept his fate in The Green Mile highlights the tragedy of his character's innocence and ultimate sacrifice. The film's bittersweet ending, with Coffey's execution and passing on his abilities to Paul, raises deep questions about justice and morality. John Coffey's smile at his execution hints at a deeper knowledge and acceptance of his fate, symbolizing his role as a messianic figure.
With fantasy elements combined with the prison drama in its powerful ending, there are many audiences who still seek to have The Green Mile explained. Directed and written by Frank Darabont, The Green Mile concerns the 1935-set story of death row prison guard Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) as he meets and is forever changed by the mild-mannered John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a physically imposing Black man sentenced to death for the rape and murder of two white girls.

Stephen King's 2023 novel Holly will be turned into a TV series, and it features a character that appeared in two previous shows from his universe.
During a Q&a at Chicago's 2023 Printers Row Lit Fest (via CinemaBlend), Emmy Award-winning director and producer Jack Bender, who previously adapted several Stephen King stories for television, revealed that he has a new King adaptation in the works. The novel in question is Holly, King's latest release.

The term “magical negro” was originally popularized by Spike Lee as a way to describe Black characters in films that only exist to aid white protagonists. When Lee first introduced this term in 2001 on a visit to Yale, he mentioned films like The Legend of Bagger Vance, The Green Mile, What Dreams May Come, and The Family Man as examples of this exhausting trope, and in the two decades since, this cliché continues to rear its ugly head in entertainment. In The American Society of Magical Negroes, the feature debut of writer-director Kobi Libii, he attempts to parody and take down this concept, yet with a film that doesn’t have the teeth to do this story justice.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Focus Features will release “The American Society of Magical Negroes” on Friday, March 15.
In one of the few laugh-out-loud scenes of “The American Society of Magical Negroes,” actor, writer and comedian Kobi Libii’s unevenly written but good-looking directorial debut that gradually runs out of steam, a Black man grabs an unsuspecting white person by the crotch to supposedly cure him of a prostatic illness.
The scene is a direct reference to Frank Darabont’s 1999 Oscar nominee “The Green Mile,” in which Michael Clarke Duncan’s prison inmate with a heart of gold (and supernatural powers) and Tom Hanks’ kind guard get similarly, well, acquainted. “The Green Mile” was only one of the then-recent barrage of popular movies like “What Dreams May Come,” “The Family Man,” and “The Legend of Bagger Vance” (also amusingly referenced in Libii...

Kobi Libii knew “The American Society of Magical Negroes” would be controversial. After all, the film is a critique of the “magical negro,” the cinematic trope where Black characters are constructed to support white protagonists without internal lives of their own.
Libii grew up in Gary, Ind. in the ’90s, during a run of those movies. “Some of them were seared in my brain,” he tells Variety, remembering a time when “The Legend of Bagger Vance” and “The Green Mile” were lauded by critics and audiences alike, even though they reinforce those tropes. (Both movies are not-so-indirectly referenced in the film.) “It really agitated me at the time but I didn’t have a language for that. I was just told that this was a great movie even though Black people are doing this.”

Kiefer Sutherland and River Phoenix helped generate the title of the movie by singing the song "Stand by Me" on set. The 1986 movie is based on Stephen King's novel, The Body, but did not take the novel's title. The movie has since been considered one of the best King adaptations, alongside The Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption.
Stand by Me actor Kiefer Sutherland explains how the movie’s title came about from him and one of his late co-stars. The 1986 movie is about a group of middle-school-aged boys looking for a missing body in the woods. The story is inspired by Stephen King's own childhood, which was written into the 1982 novel, The Body. Starring Sutherland, River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell, the film remains a timeless, emotional classic today.
Decades after the release of Stand by Me, Sutherland reveals how he and Phoenix helped generate the title.

As she strolls comfortably toward multiple Oscar nominations for “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig is on track to set several Academy Awards records tied to her age, gender and the movie’s financial success. In terms of more general achievements, perhaps the most impressive one in her reach is becoming the first filmmaker to have all of her initial three solo features contend for Best Picture. Over the past 95 years, many directors have had shots at earning that distinction and a few have come remarkably close, but none of their chances have been quite as strong as hers.
Since Gerwig did not produce her first two independently-directed films – “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019) – and, per academy rules, cannot officially share in a “Barbie” Best Picture nomination due to her screen credit of “executive producer” (rather than the qualifying “producer” or “produced by”), she does not and will not soon have any bids...

A new report suggests that Frank Darabont is set to helm episodes of Stranger Things, returning to the director’s chair for the first time since The Walking Dead.
We haven’t heard much from Frank Darabont in the last decade. Darabont directed IMDb’s number one ranked movie of all time, The Shawshank Redemption, not to mention other admired Stephen King adaptations, The Green Mile and The Mist. He’s also the guy who got the TV show The Walking Dead up and running to the point that it became a worldwide phenomenon.

Once upon a time, Roger Ebert held that "no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad." The Stanton-Walsh rule could be violated, as Ebert noted in his scathing review of the unfathomably awful "Wild Wild West," but you only did yourself a favor if you cast one of these gentlemen. The script could be dire and the direction poor, but an appearance from Stanton and/or Walsh was/is – we lost Stanton in 2017, but Walsh is still going strong at 88 years old — only ever a joyous occasion.
The Stanton-Walsh rule applies to other character actors, and I can't think of many performers who've given me more pleasure over the last few decades than Sam Rockwell. He first popped for me in Tom Dicillo's hugely underrated indie comedy "Box of Moonlight" as a ball of non-conformist energy who...

The Mist's mysterious and deadly mist is caused by a government experiment gone wrong, allowing creatures from another dimension to inhabit Earth. David's group chooses their fate by deciding to take matters into their own hands, rather than being sacrificed by a cult. The film's dark and disturbing ending, where David kills his own son and others before realizing that help was on its way, was a departure from Stephen King's original ending, but was approved by the author.

Earlier this week, we heard that Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is the latest director to be attached to helm an adaptation of The Long Walk, a Stephen King novel that was published under the Richard Bachman pen name back in 1979. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that The Long Walk is set up at Lionsgate, with Lawrence in “final talks” to direct. So this will be a continuation of the working relationship Lionsgate and Lawrence have had on the Hunger Game films.
Joe Drake of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group provided the following statement: “When you have enjoyed the strong creative collaboration and success that we have had working with Francis, you want to repeat that experience as much as possible.

Hollywood has been trying to adapt Stephen King's novel 'The Long Walk' into a film since 1988, but it has faced numerous setbacks and changes in directors. Francis Lawrence, known for directing the Hunger Games movies, is now attached to direct The Long Walk and is very excited about it. The story of The Long Walk is set in a dystopian future and features a deadly game where teenage boys have to walk above a certain speed or risk being shot, making Lawrence a suitable choice for the film due to his experience in directing post-apocalyptic settings and working with ensemble casts.

‘The Mist’ 4K Ultra HD Review – There’s a Reason We’re Still Talking About This Movie 16 Years Later
Stephen King adaptations have always been hit and miss. Before Mike Flanagan came along, there was one filmmaker who could always be trusted with King’s material: Frank Darabont, whose first foray into filmmaking was a short adaptation of “The Woman in the Room.” After making a name for himself as a screenwriter with the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob, Darabont made his feature directorial debut with 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption and followed it up with The Green Mile in 1999.
His thus-far final King adaptation came in 2007 with The Mist, which finds a group of locals trapped in a grocery store while an ominous fog shrouding mysterious secrets envelopes their quaint Maine town. A microcosm of any community, the supermarket is a canny setting for a contained thriller. The divisive mob mentality and pigheaded self-righteousness that manifests under pressure is even more poignant in a post-Trump world.

A microcosm of any community, the supermarket is a canny setting for a contained thriller. The divisive mob mentality and pigheaded self-righteousness that manifests under pressure is even more poignant in a post-Trump world.

An adaptation of The Long Walk, a Stephen King novel that was published under the Richard Bachman pen name back in 1979, has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal was hired to direct the film from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, whose credits include the two most recent Scream movies. While doing the press rounds for his film The Last Voyage of the Demeter earlier this year, Øvredal revealed that he was no longer involved with The Long Walk, and said not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life. Now we know who has replaced him at the helm: Francis Lawrence.

The '90s were a decade of tearjerker films that can only be watched once due to their emotional intensity and impact on audiences. Movies like Schindler's List, The Green Mile, and Life Is Beautiful tackle heavy topics like WWII and the Holocaust, leaving viewers in tears. Emotional films like Titanic, Fried Green Tomatoes, and The Iron Giant provide heart-wrenching stories that evoke strong emotions and leave a lasting impact on audiences.
The '90s were an amazing decade for film, and the filmmakers at the time had no problem making audiences cry their eyes out. Some of the biggest tearjerkers of the decade are so upsetting, they can only be watched once. However, if the mood is right for a good cry, the '90s certainly knew how to deliver. During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) is headed back into the world of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, and Flanagan has announced that production has wrapped.
Perhaps what’s more notable here is that Flanagan’s announcement thread highlights what to expect. Or rather, what not to expect: The Life of Chuck won’t be a horror movie.
That’s probably not a surprise to those familiar with the source short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. The Life of Chuck is three separate stories linked together to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.

Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – recently went into production on another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck… and now, during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, star Tom Hiddleston (Loki) has confirmed that his work on the film has been completed. Tom Hiddleston had a great time filming The Life of Chuck and praised director Mike Flanagan's ability to interpret Stephen King's work. The Life of Chuck is described as having a rare warmth and spirit that is reminiscent of King's The Shawshank Redemption. Flanagan's background in horror and understanding of King's writing make him a perfect fit for adapting The Life of Chuck.

Horror is a diverse storytelling genre that’s become popular for many reasons, but by and large there’s a willfulness on the audience’s part to get scared. Horror is subjective territory and what’s liable to frighten one person may not connect with another. Horror movies can resort to diverse tactics to create terror. However, there are certain devices like jump scares that have become quite prevalent.
Jump scares are when abrupt editing and visual dissonance can interrupt a tense or calm moment so that the audience is caught off guard. Jump scares have a mixed reputation and there’s a right and wrong way to implement them. Those who dislike jump scares or are too sensitive to this style of horror still have plenty of great options when it comes to frightening genre cinema.

Mike Flanagan has become the go-to director for Stephen King movie adaptations, known for his work on films like Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game. Flanagan's upcoming adaptation of The Life of Chuck is generating buzz due to its experimental storytelling and impressive cast, including Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill. Frank Darabont was the first prominent filmmaker to adapt King's stories, directing classics like The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, and his success can be attributed to his focus on well-developed characters. Flanagan follows a similar approach in his adaptations.
Mike Flanagan is undoubtedly the champion of Stephen King movie adaptations, but he was not the first director to claim that title. Stephen King’s horror stories have been adapted for the screen since the 1980s, with over 60 movies to his name. With such a broad filmography, it is no surprise there have been some incredible directors attached to King’s work.

On paper, 2007's The Mist looks like a total misfire. The film wasn't a huge hit at the box office, although foreign grosses helped guide it to profitability, and it was a bit divisive upon initial release because it's a decidedly brutal film. The movie says a lot about different walks of life in a community that shows their true colors when trapped inside their local grocery store as a mysterious fog takes over the town. Monsters are hiding in the mist, but the humans also hide monstrous tendencies as well. Then there is the ending. It's a cold piece of work that will turn off those looking for a pleasant conclusion. However, in the years since its release, The Mist has been reappraised as a solid piece of work and is becoming regarded as one of the best adaptations of Stephen King's distinguished career.

Horror author Stephen King has provided the source material for some of the most riveting films of the past 40 years. The Shining, The Green Mile, Carrie, Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and It among many other modern cinematic classics are all based on King's written works. In some of the adaptations of his books, King even graces the silver screen with a cameo. On occasion, he'll even play himself in projects beyond his own bibliography. He threw out the Red Sox's opening pitch in 2005's Fever Pitch and voiced himself in the Season 12 Simpsons episode, "Insane Clown Poppy." One of his most overlooked contributions to the screen, however, is also his sweetest, as he lent his voice to a scene in an unassuming romantic comedy, which in turn portrays King in a down-to-earth and earnest manner.

One of Flanagan's upcoming projects is a movie adaptation of Stephen King's "The Life of Chuck" short story. The film has already started casting, and fans are excited to see Flanagan tackle more King adaptations.

Stephen King is a tastemaker of terror. Ever since breaking out with “Carrie” — the sordid tale of a telekinetic teenager adapted into Brian De Palma’s 1976 classic starring Sissy Spacek — the horror author has had a hand in shaping our nightmares.
With dozens of novels, novellas, and short stories to his name, the 75-year-old writer has provided inspiration to just as many genre filmmakers. Mike Flanagan, the mastermind behind Netflix’s super successful “Haunting” anthology, has two King adaptations under his belt, including 2017’s “Gerald’s Game” (also released by the streaming giant) and 2019’s theatrically released “Doctor Sleep.” He’ll take on “The Dark Tower” as his next King project, after adapting Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” for Netflix.
Frank Darabont earned his three Oscar nominations working on Best Picture nominees “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile,” both of which were based on King’s short stories.

But it appears that is starting to change. King’s work has been experiencing a cinematic renaissance as of late.

Legendary horror author Stephen King has created some of the most haunting and captivating stories of all time. Whether it's books like The Shining, It, Misery, or Carrie, King has created some of the most popular, macabre, and fascinating stories for avid book readers to sink their teeth into, and many of them have been brilliantly reimagined into movies and TV shows. Take classic horror movies like Carrie, Cujo, The Shining, and the Oscar-winning Misery, not to mention King's non-horror movies like The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. Unfortunately, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines doesn't belong in this pedigree.
The Paramount+ film is the second Stephen King film adaptation this year, following The Boogeyman, and while some fans were disappointed by The Boogeyman, it seems masterful compared to the new prequel, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, which promises an eerie dive into Jud Crandall's past. It's an interesting premise that seems to be a recipe for success.

The Mist, a film adaptation of Stephen King's novella, contains a Dark Tower Easter egg in the form of a painting created by the main protagonist. The painting, created by renowned artist Drew Struzan, features a Clint Eastwood-like gunslinger, a door, a rose, and a mysterious structure, referencing King's Dark Tower series. Struzan's contribution to The Mist goes beyond the poster art, as he also crafted the Dark Tower painting, making it a cool and significant Easter egg for King and movie fans.

Only one film adaptation of Stephen King's novels has won an Oscar, and that film is Misery, a psychological horror masterpiece. Misery received critical acclaim for its departure from fantasy elements, with Kathy Bates winning the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Annie Wilkes. Stephen King's non-horror film adaptations range from excellent to underwhelming, with some failing to capture the essence of his original work. Films like The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me have become renowned classics that often overshadow their Stephen King origins. Despite mixed reviews, some adaptations like The Green Mile and Dolores Claiborne successfully convey powerful messages and feature exceptional performances.
Stephen King knows the ins and outs of terrifying audiences, but he also dabbles in non-horror storytelling. Whether tapping into science fiction or the thriller genre, the author isn't afraid to step away from stories about haunted hotels or vicious dogs. Like many of his horror novels, some of his non-horror stories have also received film adaptations.
King has never shied away from giving his honest opinion on the film adaptations of his work. While King unapologetically hates Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, he praised later adaptations like Andy Muschietti's It.

Despite not receiving much recognition from the Academy, King has had five film adaptations that were nominated for Oscars, showcasing his influence on the film industry. The film adaptations of King's books, such as Carrie, Stand By Me, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile, have made their mark in Hollywood, even if they did not take home the top prize at the Oscars.
There have been many movies made from Stephen King’s books, but only five have received Academy Award nominations with an even smaller number of wins. King began his career as an author, but his name is just as recognizable to movie-goers as it is to book-readers. Through his successful books and their popular screen adaptations, King...
