Oddball mix of comedy and drama

Warning: Spoilers
THE GOOFY GANG is a typically oddball mix of comedy and drama that somehow works under the tight direction of Stanley Fung, who also co-stars as a rich guy who finds himself kidnapped by a gang of impressionable youths. It's a surprising dark format for a comedy, with scenes of violence, ruthlessness and suspense at odds with the goofier material elsewhere (the Richard Ng and John Sham cameos are more at home in a LUCKY STARS-style production), but somehow it works. It helps that the film has plenty to say about capitalism and human nature, while the suspense-style plotting works well. Joyce Godenzi makes plenty of a token role as a cop, while Derek Yee, best known for his Shaw Brothers wuxia fare, transfers to the genre well.
