Outlandish as well as creative
Vartiainen5 December 2016
I think the reason why I prefer this film over so many modern day Finnish comedies is the fact that while it contains the same kind of crude humour that relies on characters that act like exaggeratedly mentally handicapped children most of the time, the plot is bizarre enough to keep my interest. Modern Finnish comedies try to draw much of their humour from exaggerated real-life situations, whereas this is almost like an adventure film.

So what's the story? A patient of mental institution convinces a gay nurse to escort him out on a journey to Lapland in search of the treasure his father supposedly hid there after his gold-digging days. On their way they meet two men who have just been fired from a factory for reasons of incompetence so massive that it's a wonder the factory was still standing after their first shift there. They also meet the mental patient's brother, who's an Orthodox monk, get chased by the mental institution staff and police alike, crash their car in the middle of a homosexual poet Bacchanal, et cetera, et cetera. It's almost like watching Blues Brothers, or Monty Python even. Only instead of suave calmness there's drunkenness and instead of bizarre silliness there's people acting like five-year-old high school jocks.

And that's really all that can be said about it. I do like it and I enjoyed its humour, but it's definitely a small production with limited talent pool and jokes that are quite repetitive if you've watched the Kummeli show at all. Worth a watch if you like your comedies with a healthy sprinkling of unexpected.

Finnish Comedy Gold
TheHande2 December 2005
Okay, while not the shiniest film ever made "Kummeli: Kultakuume" is one of the best and most memorable comedies I've ever seen. Unlike the other film "Stories" which was compiled out of extremely long sketches this movie actually has a very well thought-out plot.

The characters also have enough variety that the film doesn't get repetitive even in its feature length.

The presence of some very talented actors (aside the Kummeli-group of course) adds a whole new dimension of theatrics not regularly seen in Kummeli films. Also, who would have thought that a period film set in 1984 could be this amusing (then again, it worked for GTA).

I dare to say that this movie easily beats Spede Pasanen's films any day of the week, though the type of comedy is naturally a bit different.

One of the best Finnish comedies ever.

The Deeper Message
vesa-pirttimaa29 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The Goldrush(Kultakuume) is having an important message behind the humor and ironic it has. The movie is proclaiming the message of accepting differences and also making a question for a client. Who of you can say that you are totally sensible and doing good.

For my point of view the message can't be found very easily but it also depends of whom of the actors you are focusing. But if you check the phrases of Elmeri and check what is important for him in the story you soon find out that he is not the one to be claimed mad.

The good side in the movie is that it is having many layers. People may find out various points easily.

Something I want to tell you about Kultakuume
epilogue24 March 2003
Film tells about a man who's living in a mental hospital. One day He finds out that his relative, Kyrpa Jooseppi (trust me, you don't want to know what that means in english), who used to dig gold in Lapland back in 1940's. Back then there were Nazis in Finland who tried to blackmale gold from Jooseppi. Jooseppi and His Gold mining friends killed couple of Nazi's and buried them with a treasure. So it's all about man finding his Grandfathers gold treasure. The bad thing is, that there's still couple of old Nazies who are also after the treasure.

The film is very funny with lot's of good jokes, but it still lacks the humor that can be found in Kummeli Stories. You should see this film alltough it's not currently sold as DVD.

Kummeli's worst?
SkullScreamerReturns18 April 2021
The Kummeli group had legendary tv shows and they also made some movies. "Kummeli Stories" was pretty good, and I think I also liked "Jackpot". But "Kultakuume" just isn't very good. It's hard to say what's the problem here. It does have a lot of great actors. For example everytime Vesa-Matti Loiri is on the screen it raises the quality level. But maybe it's just that most of the characters seem annoying to me and the comedy isn't funny enough. This dvd goes to "I don't need" pile.

The One

It's a great comedy with really great jokes and actors. Every actor is perfect for their roles and making their best also. I think that only Finnish people can understand most of the jokes, but check it if you can. It's the One that begun the making of good Finnish films lately.

Legendary!
