"Hyakujuuou" part of the series' name literally means, "king of a hundred beasts", but putting into context it really means "king of beasts". Golion's name is a Japanese and English combination that literally means, "Five Lion" - "Go" is the Japanese word for "five".
The male protagonists' family names are the names of metals:
- Kogane means "gold" (literally, "yellow gold")
- Shirogane means "silver" (literally, "white gold")
- Kurogane means "iron" (literally, "black gold"),
- Seidou means "bronze" (literally, "blue copper" or "green copper"),
- Suzuishi means "tin" (literally, "tin stone," referring to the ore that produces tin).
Around 1999, it was learned that World Events Productions, Inc. (which owns the English adaptation of "Golion" under the name, "Voltron: Defender of the Universe") bought the rights of Golion from Toei Animation Co., the famous Japanese animation studio that created. This means that World Events has both the rights to the English adaptation and its original series, very unusual for a non-Japanese distributor.
