Dull Operetta
malcolmgsw14 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
For some reason producers in the 1930s seem enthralled at the idea of turning operas, particularly those based in central Europe, into films.I cannot imagine that the majority of them had any success. One only has to conjure up memories of Lily Pons,Grace Moore,Richard Tauber and so on to be rendered into a catatonic trance. This film is little different.Day,who i had not associated with this type of film, plays an opera singer. Her PR man decides that her ailing show needs a tonic so he invents a story about Day finding her long lost father, who is actually dead.Dead falls in love with a stage door johnny. His father thinks he is Days long lost dad and thus tries everything to break up the romance. That is about it.Everything comes out alright and you awake from a deep sleep when the end title comes up.
