The Matchbox line of tiny toy cars is to become a big feature film, and Extraction director Sam Hargrave has landed the plum job of making it.
We learned all the way back in 2022 that Mattel was looking to get a film project underway that would feature its long-running line of Matchbox toy cars. As part of the press release, it was trumpeted that ‘one Matchbox car is sold every second’ meaning that the brand possesses that all important ‘pre-awareness’ that is seen as crucial by the folks that give these types of films the thumbs-up.
Then 2022 happened and that other film based on a Mattel toy did rather well. You may have read a thing or two about the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, but in the wake of that film’s huge success, Mattel announced that it had a number of projects on the horizon that would...

Selena Gomez has been in the public eye ever since she was very young. Starting at the age of ten, the actress starred in the hit children’s television series, Barney & Friends, which was followed by her getting cast in the iconic Disney series, The Wizards of Waverly Place.
Since becoming the high-profile celebrity that she is, the entire world seems to have become invested in her personal life, specifically when it comes to her romantic partners.

Ana Navarro is concerned about what is happening at Univision after the Spanish-language network seemingly shifted their strategy to covering Donald Trump.
The political commentator and co-host of The View took to social media to air her comments on the situation and she’s taking it so seriously that she shared a video with no glam and no filters.
Navarro started off the video by giving background to Univision and gave them accolades for “being a good player for the Latino community” over the years in keeping them informed on politics. However, she raised concerns over an interview with Trump the network aired from his Mar-a-Lago residency that was conducted by Enrique Acevedo, the most-watched news anchor on broadcast television in México via TelevisaUnivision’s Las Estrellas network.
“It was a ridiculous interview. It was embarrassing. It was an interview with no pushback,” Navarro said of the Trump interview by Acevedo.

*Adopts old-timey prospector voice* Back in my day, we got to believe all sorts of fun nonsense. A friend of a friend would claim to have seen Bigfoot at a Sears. A friend of a friend of a friend would report the existence of a ghost train. A friend of a friend of a friend, twice removed, would send a chain email convinced that if they didn’t their soul would be harvested by a demon. We called this phenomena “urban legends” – silly little folkloric tales that made the world a touch more whimsical.
And then the World Wide Web came along with its “fact-checkers,” “journalists,” and “people who have a base level grasp of reality” to tear it all away. We used to have it so good before the internet, I swear to God. Pull the plug already.
Still, even in the era of mass media, some spooky urban...

Demi Lovato has parted ways with talent manager Scooter Braun, with whom she signed in 2019.
Billboard reports that Lovato is seeking new management after splitting with Braun last month. Representatives for the singer and Braun didn’t immediately reply to The Hollywood Reporter’s requests for comment.

Mattel says the Barney movie will be inspired by Charlie Kaufman, while Barbie director Greta Gerwig is planning two Narnia movies for Netflix
The Daniel Kaluuya-produced movie featuring Barney the Dinosaur will be an “adult”, “surrealistic” and “A24-type” film inspired by Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze, it has been revealed.
In a wide-ranging report on the film-making plans of toymaker Mattel in the New Yorker, Mattel Films executive Kevin McKeon said of the project: “We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids. It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney – just the level of disenchantment within the generation.”...

The forthcoming Barney film from Mattel Films to be produced by and star Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya will be an adult-oriented, “A24-type” project, executive Kevin McKeon has revealed.
His comments came as part of an interview with The New Yorker, surrounding the launch of Mattel’s big summer release, Barbie, in which McKeon added that the Kaluuya-led feature will be “surrealistic,” in the vein of films by Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze.

Taking the tale of the talking purple dinosaur in this direction underscores that Mattel is “here to make art,” McKeon said.

Warner Bros. Discovery picked up CG-animated series “Barney’s World,” featuring new adventures of the enduring purple dinosaur and his pals, set to bow on the Max streaming service and Cartoon Network in 2024.
The series, announced earlier this year as part of Mattel’s Barney franchise relaunch, will “revamp the iconic character for modern audiences,” according to Wbd. The series is co-produced by Mattel Television and Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana.
Barney is the beloved children’s character who captured the hearts of millions of children — before he became a target of vitriol across the internet and pop culture as explored in Peacock’s 2022 docu-series “I Love You, You Hate Me.” The original live-action “Barney & Friends” debuted on PBS stations in 1992 and ran through 2010.

Demi Lovato knows a thing or two — or twenty — about growing up in the spotlight. The singer will be putting their personal experience to good use as they make their directorial debut at the helm of a documentary, tentatively titled Child Stars. The film aims to “deconstruct the highs and lows of growing up in the spotlight through the lens of some of the world’s most famous former child stars.” It is currently scheduled to premiere on Hulu in 2024.

Selena Gomez is a triple-threat star who has been a mainstay in pop culture since she was a young girl. Gomez began her career on the children’s TV series Barney & Friends, proving her talent and going on to land many other high-profile opportunities. These days, Gomez is an actor and singer with many irons in the fire — but many of her fans still know her best for her work on the Disney Channel, specifically as Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place.
However, in the years following Gomez’s departure from the show, she lost touch with many of her co-stars. In a recent podcast interview with her Wizards of Waverly Place co-stars Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise, Gomez revealed why she fell out of touch with them.

Wizards of Waverly Place was one of the most popular shows on the Disney Channel in the early 2000s. Selena Gomez, who starred in the series as Alex Russo, became an instant sensation.
Gomez has gone on to have a successful career as an adult as both a singer and an actor. She currently stars in Only Murders in the Building, along with comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short. She has also had 8 top-ten songs and is said to be working on new music.
However, her rise to fame began on the Disney Channel.

Selena Gomez has opened up about feeling “triggered” by her Disney past.
The actor shot to fame as a child star in Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place, which she starred in from 2007 to 2012.
Since then, she has carved a career away from the studio thanks to roles in Spring Breakers and Only Murders in the Building. She also does charity work, and has her own clothing, handbag and fragrance lines.
Gomez says that while she “definitely feels free of” the Disney label, she “sometimes gets triggered”.
She told Vanity Fair: “It’s not that I’m ashamed of my past – it’s just that I’ve worked so hard to find my own way. I don’t want to be who I was. I want to be who I am.”
Gomez said the pressures of being “perfect” while working for Disney took its toll.

An animated reboot of Barney is in the works, according to Mattel, and is set to arrive sometime in 2024. The reboot of Barney & Friends, the famous 1990s children’s television franchise featuring the titular purple dinosaur, will be produced by Mattel Television and Corus Entertainment. The show will accompany several films and YouTube videos featuring Barney, alongside a launch of new kids’ merchandise. Adult appeal and accessories with the original Barney design are also expected to release. “Barney’s message of love and kindness has stood the test of time,” said Josh Silverman, Chief Franchise Officer and Global Head of Consumer Products at Mattel. “We will tap into the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves, and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation of kids and families worldwide across content, products, and experiences.” Barney originally debuted on PBS in 1992, gaining immense...

Purple dinosaur purists, beware: Barney is returning, but with a very different look.
Mattel announced on Monday that it is relaunching the franchise centered on a purple T-Rex, and among the new offerings will be an animated reimagining of the iconic (and polarizing) live-action Barney & Friends. The Og series, which bowed on PBS in 1992 and ran for nearly two decades, featured a human actor in a dinosaur costume.

In this age of reboots, perhaps it was inevitable: A beloved (by its target audience) and also reviled (by a sizable group outside the core demo) character getting a new look and relaunch.
All of which is to say, Barney is coming back.
Mattel announced Monday that it’s relaunching the franchise built around the purple dinosaur. The relaunch will include a preschool animated series set to debut in 2024 — Barney will no longer be portrayed by a human in a T. rex costume — and a range of consumer products aimed at the under-6 set. The relaunch will also cover possible films and YouTube content. “Apparel and accessories for adult fans, featuring classic Barney, are also in development,” Mattel notes.
The updated Barney brand builds on the long-running Barney & Friends, which debuted nationally on PBS in 1992 and ran for 18 years, with repeats continuing for several years beyond that. The show...

Barney and Friends. There’s a throwback for you, right? The big purple dinosaur that was part of our childhood television lineup was not everyone’s favorite. He wasn’t the worst thing on television (does anyone remember the Teletubbies?), but he was not exactly the most popular dinosaur in the world either. While we might remember him as the purple monstrosity that sang the song “I love you, you love me, we’re a happy family, with a great big hug and kiss from me to you, won’t you say you love me, too?” on repeat – never allowing the song to exit

We watch Sam Smith arrive at an old castle. Within seconds, they’re inside, surrounded by provocatively dressed dancers undulating suggestively. Smith stands at the centre, tassels on their nipples. Streams of water bounce off their face. In a nearby room, leather-clad BDSMers thrust amorously atop beds. I suppose it’s no wonder Smith’s latest music video, for the disco-inflected track “I’m Not Here to Make Friends”, has got people up in arms. It’s a raunchy, unabashed display of sexuality. Some have branded it “pornography” – but they’re wrong. It’s an accusation that reeks of homophobia.
The track itself isn’t the issue. “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” has pretty innocuous lyrics – tamely horny lines about looking to pull in a nightclub. Smith’s video, too, shouldn’t really have raised too many eyebrows: the non-binary English singer was simply embracing the kind of in-your-face,...

"How I Met Your Father" is back, and no, we still don't know who the father is. But the season two premiere, which Hulu released on Jan. 24, promised something even bigger: a major cameo from a member of the original "How I Met Your Mother" cast. It's not surprising, since the season one finale featured Cobie Smulders as Robin Scherbatsky giving advice to Sophie (Hilary Duff) about her relationship with Jesse (Chris Lowell).
But in the season two premiere, viewers get a look at the original's most legendary cast member: Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson. Here's how it goes down.

People have been pondering for some time whether or not too much of a good thing can be bad. Consuming an excess of candy, for example, can be bad because it can upset your stomach. On the other hand, Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald have said that too much of their drink of choice is never enough. And then there's that one episode of "How I Met Your Mother" where the gang has to tell Neil Patrick Harris' Barney that if every day is legendary, then none of them are.

Multi-hyphenate Selena Gomez’s candid documentary, “My Mind & Me,” is now available to viewers in the U.S. on Apple TV+. Directed by Alek Keshishian, the 95-minute film follows Gomez’s journey to stardom, as well as the mental and physical health struggles that have come with being in the spotlight from a young age.
Gomez’s early career was marked by recurring performances on “Barney & Friends” in the early 2000s, minor gigs on Disney Channel original shows and ultimately a lead role on “Wizards of Waverly Place” as Alex Russo. But the ex-Disney star’s reality was far from the perpetual happy endings she portrayed; the documentary provides a jarringly intimate snapshot at how Gomez’s path to fame coupled with personal trauma enacted severe consequences on her mental health.

If you're a parent, chances are you have an intimate knowledge of all things "Bluey," "Daniel Tiger," "Sesame Street," "Paw Patrol," "Arthur," "Peppa Pig," and the nightmarish curse known as "CoComelon." Pre-school programming is in a sincere heyday, and despite involuntarily flinching whenever you hear the "Hot Dog!" song from "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," children's programming is the best it's been in years. As with all genres of entertainment, kiddie shows have also seen a resurgence in nostalgia. Millennials lost their collective minds when Steve returned for a "Blue's Clues" cameo, and all cried like toddlers once again when he gave us hopeful messages during quarantine.
There's been some reassessment as of late regarding public opinions of beloved children's figures like "Barney the Dinosaur," but few could have predicted the return of one of the most polarizing figures in children's entertainment history. I'm talking about "Teletubbies."

Peacock’s “I Love You, You Hate Me” two-part docuseries about the rise and fall of Barney the Dinosaur is the fifth title to launch as part of the platform’s inaugural DocFest and arguably the most anticipated.
The docu about the purple dinosaur who preached love and acceptance on PBS “Barney & Friends” debuts Oct. 12 on the streaming service. It examines Barney’s meteoric rise and how the Tyrannosaurus rex quickly became the target of hate and rage across pop culture and the early internet. Hailing from Scout Productions and director Tommy Avallone, the doc features interviews with the show’s cast and crew as well as boldface names, including Bill Nye the Science Guy and NBC’s Al Roker. The series also incorporates archival footage from the PBS’ series, which began airing in 1992.

In the second hour (or “episode”) of Peacock’s I Love You, You Hate Me, a former neo-Nazi turned anti-hate activist goes for a rather big thematic swing, connecting her personal journey with the slings and arrows directed at one particularly kid-friendly purple dinosaur.
“Obviously, I’m not saying that people who hate a children’s television character are in any way the same thing as someone who embraced the things that I embraced. However the dynamics of basing your identity around what you hate and what you despise, that those dynamics are exactly the same,” she posits.
It’s a contestable but also provocative point made in contradictory and ultimately under-defended terms, and that means that it’s probably a perfect encapsulation of Tommy Avallone’s documentary.

Two generations of children — and their parents — are familiar with the colossal purple dinosaur that frolicked across their television screens each week. The PBS series “Barney & Friends” amassed 14 seasons between 1992 and 2010 in the course of its lengthy run before coming to a flaming halt.
The reasons for the show’s initial success and accursed demise are outlined in a two-part docuseries from director Tommy Avallone, titled “I Love You, You Hate Me,” which is available for streaming on Peacock on Oct. 12.
With parallels to Sundance award-winner “Feels Good Man,” the 2020 indie documentary about Pepe the Frog that explores how a meme can be transformed from a comedic icon into a hate symbol, “I Love You, You Hate Me” delves into the lesser-known evils of the Barney bashing movement, when teenagers and adults alike began to bastardize the once-beloved character with acts of violence both physically and online.

Barney & Friends was a 90s cultural phenomenon that advocated for peace, togetherness, and love. At first, this was widely embraced, but eventually, it turned to hate during the dawn of the internet and trash TV. Some people thought his songs were annoying, and that’s understandable. But others hated the purple dinosaur so much that they became violent or made it their personality to hate him. There was even a mock religious organization called the Jihad to Destroy Barney. Director Tommy Avallone and Joel Chiodi, Executive Producer and Head of Documentaries at Scout Productions, delve deep into the cultural impact of Barney the Dinosaur with their two-part Peacock documentary I Love You, You Hate Me. But they also get into the concept building and production of the character, as well as how it affected the actors, creatives, and their families. Children’s literature loves few things as much as a mighty monster who remains, against all outward appearances, defiantly benign — one who sets out to soothe young nightmares after initially stoking them, ultimately proving that fears and anxieties aren’t limited to little folk. Boris, the cheerfully dorky title character in Ruth Stiles Gannett’s 1948 book “My Father’s Dragon,” is cut from the same soft felt as Frank L. Baum’s Cowardly Lion, Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant or Jill Murphy’s Worst Witch. A would-be flying fire-breather who hasn’t yet found his wings or his flames, he has even more growing up to do than fearful 10-year-old hero Elmer, and their mutual guilelessness sets the tone for Irish animator Nora Twomey’s winningly sweet-natured, visually transporting adaptation.

Selena Gomez is giving fans a deeper look at her personal struggles in the new trailer for her upcoming documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me”.
“Just be who you are, Selena,” the actress is heard saying in the beginning of the clip. “No one cares about what you’re doing. It’s about who I am, being okay with where I am.”
“I am grateful to be alive,” she adds in the emotionally powerful trailer before cutting into a look at her years-long health struggles with Lupus — which she underwent a kidney transplant for — as well as depression and anxiety.
The official film synopsis reads: “After years in the limelight, Selena Gomez achieves unimaginable stardom. But just as she reaches a new peak, an unexpected turn pulls her into darkness. This uniquely raw and intimate documentary spans her six-year journey into a new light.”

Pity the purple dinosaur. He came to spread a message of love, and got the stuffing knocked out of him.
I Love You, You Hate Me, the two-part documentary series premiering on Peacock on Wednesday, explores the way Barney became a runaway hit with tots, and how the tubby T-Rex ignited one of the most devastating backlashes in pop culture history.
Director Tommy Avallone admits that as a kid, he too partook in Barney bashing.
“As a teenager, for one of my birthdays I asked my aunt to make me a Barney costume, so my friends and I could beat him up on camera,” he says. “Several years later, creating this docu-series, it feels good to be on the other side and no longer a Barney hater.”
Episode 1 excavates the dinosaur’s origins in the late 1980s. He was the brainchild of Sheryl Leach, a Texas schoolteacher and new mom...

Barney was everywhere when I was growing up. But despite than the purple dinosaur’s simple message of love and understanding, the thing I remember the most was how much everyone over the age of ten seemed to hate Barney. It went beyond that at times, some people just seemed to straight-up loathe the character. Peacock has released a trailer for I Love You, You Hate Me, a two-part documentary that chronicles the rise and fall of the furious backlash towards Barney and what it says about the human need to hate.
Barney & Friends was created by Sheryl Leach and premiered on PBS in 1992 and came to an end in 2010, and while I was aware of the backlash against the show, the documentary trailer proves I didn’t know the half of it. Bob West, who initially voiced the character, reveals in the trailer that he actually received death...
