Flip's baby trouble in the Great Depression
TheLittleSongbird6 June 2018
Ub Iwerks's Flip the Frog series of cartoons was short lived, only lasting from 1930 to 1933. On the most part the Flip the Frog cartoons are not great or cartoon/animated masterpieces and it is sort of understandable as to why Flip didn't make it bigger. However they are far from terrible ones either and do hold some interest, enough of them even being good.

Despite not being historically significant like 'Fiddlesticks', which other than that was actually to me a lesser Flip the Frog cartoon, was, 'Nurse Maid' is still pretty good. Not one of the best of the series, but far from one of the worst. It is not perfect but there are things here that improve quite a bit and done much better than many other Flip the Frog cartoons.

A lot of good things in 'Nurse Maid'. The animation is very good, with beautifully detailed backgrounds, nice shading and characters that aren't drawn too crudely. There is some nice character animation here. The music makes even more of an impact, it is lushly and cleverly orchestrated, full of lively energy and not only adds brilliantly to the action it enhances it. Definitely the best thing about 'Nurse Maid'.

There are plentiful sight gags in a gag-rich cartoon, and they are mostly beautifully timed, though there are a few sloppy ones, and very amusing, even when unoriginal. Maybe not always hilarious but they hardly fall flat. There is a nice natural charm and a good deal of zest.

Characters are lively, with a baby that is not as overly cute as feared. There is a lot of mischievous fun. The pacing is generally secure and there is a good sense of what it was like in the Great Depression, especially at the attention-grabbing start.

Flip is a bit bland still though despite showing more personality and mischief than usual, he never was one of animation's most compelling, most interesting or personality-filled lead characters.

'Nurse Maid' does get a little sentimental in places and a little repetitive in a couple of others in his adventures with the baby.

In conclusion though, pretty good. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Tons Of Sight Gags Make This 'Flip' Cartoon A Lot Of Fun
ccthemovieman-16 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
There are more sight gags in here than you could ever hopefully expect in a seven-minute cartoon. It's just great stuff; some of the best from UB Iwerks and his early Flip The Frog cartoons. I looked at some of the Volume One DVD of "Cartoons That Time Forget: The UB Iwerks Collection" and thought many were just "fair," but this "Volume Two," so far, is fantastic. This is the third Flip cartoon I've seen on this DVD and all three are wild and fantastic.

The first two minutes of this one could easily be called, Flip the Paper Boy as we see all kinds of disasters that befall him as he tries to see newspapers on the street. Soon, an old maid comes by and offers him a nice big coin if he'll watch a baby in the carriage while she goes inside and shops. (It was a MUCH more trusting world 75 years ago!).

What happens with Flip and the baby has to be seen to be believed! You get chases, an assortment of wild animals, Turkish baths, tonics that make you turn into a superman, on and on.....just insane things that happen one-after-the-other. Writing about this can't do it justice.

If you enjoy insane cartoons where it is non-stop lunacy, you'll love this.

Flip watches over a baby-oh, the humanity!
llltdesq10 November 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This is actually a fairly good short. Warning: I more or less have to discuss some parts of this in order to comment in a comprehendable manner, so consider this your spoiler warning.

Flip is having a really bad day. Said bad day leads our hero to take on the job of watching a baby for a whole quarter! Flip's misfortunes continue and the cartoon revolves around his attempts to retrieve his fee. He really needs that quarter badly, to judge by what he puts himself through to get it back. I don't think I'd go through what he does for a quarter!

Great sight gags abound and Flip actually has something of a personality in this one. He evokes sympathy at points here. Well worth watching. Recommended.

Nurse Maid (1932)

*** (out of 4)

Flip the Frog is out doing his own thing when a mother asks him to watch her baby while she goes into a store and shops. Flip takes the job but soon regrets it when the baby swallows his coin and he must try and get it back.

NURSE MAID is actually the first film in the series that I've seen. Whenever you see Ub Iwerks name you immediately expect something of good quality and this animated short doesn't disappoint. I thought the overall flow of the movie was quite good and there was just a peaceful and fun nature to it that jumped right off the screen. There are some pretty fun adventures as Flip tries to get the coin back including a fishing attempt that doesn't work out too well. The animation itself is quite good and there's just something about a B&W animated film that makes the drawings stand out even more.
