This short is an early UPA short and the studio's growing pains can be readily seen. There will be spoilers ahead:
This short is competent, enjoyable and even funny in spots, but it's an average effort for the most part. It concerns a miner interested in gold, his daughter and the poor sap, er, fellow who comes along to catch his lady fair's eye. Problem is, our eager erstwhile hero has a fondness for Boston baked beans and not much else (with an avowed and definite disinterest in the female).
The lady, Clementine by name, is not easily dissuaded, resorting to subterfuge and acting to try to land her heart's desire, while her miner father is convinced the young interloper has designs on the claim. At one point, Clementine is discouraged until college boy hits the mother lode on HIS claim, at which point daddy decides his daughter needs to step up her game by cooking her way to a fortune. She eventually gets around to the beans and our Rhodes scholar succumbs to her charms, leaving all three parties quite happy.
This is on a three disc box set of Jolly Frolics shorts and is well worth watching. The set itself is excellent. Recommended.
