Few filmmakers can boast a filmography like Christopher Nolan. The legendary director has risen to all-time-great since his arrival in the ‘90s, moving from cerebral indie fare like Memento and Following, to none-more-ambitious brain-twisting blockbusters like Inception and the Oscar-dominating Oppenheimer. Factor in one of the greatest superhero trilogies of all time with the Dark Knight movies, bold originals like Interstellar and Tenet, and instant-classic thrillers like The Prestige and Dunkirk, and you have a body of work for the ages. And as the director tells Empire, none of it worked out quite how he expected.
For Empire's Christopher Nolan Special Collector’s Edition, we sat down with Nolan – and his producing partner and wife Emma Thomas – for a major new career-spanning interview, looking back on everything they’ve achieved. Local blockbuster, “The Roundup: Punishment” extended its dominance of the South Korea theatrical box office for a fourth weekend. That lifted its cumulative total to a powerful $75 million.
“Punishment,” the fourth part of a brutal action comedy film franchise produced by and starring Don Lee (aka Ma Dong-seok), earned $3.05 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). While the film’s week-on-week performance was a 46% decrease, “Punishment” still enjoyed a 36% share of the Korean theatrical market.
After nearly four weeks on release, it has accumulated a total of $75.2 million from 10.7 million admissions. The year’s biggest title to date remains “Exhuma” with $84.8 million earned from 11.9 million ticket sales.
Those two films have dominated proceedings at the Korean box office this year and helped Korea stage a belated recovery in theatrical trends. Both March and April were recent records.

Long before he confused the heck out of all of us with "Tenet," Christopher Nolan was producing scripts so perplexing that even veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio and Guy Pearce didn't understand them. Tom Hardy has admitted to taking a leap on the script for "Inception," which he claimed was a "bit complicated," and Nolan even confused himself by including a famous line in "The Dark Knight" that he didn't understand.
So, even if you're a Nolan fan, you're likely used to being befuddled by the director's efforts. But the man basically announced his arrival in Hollywood as a filmmaker with a penchant for the perplexing. After self-financing his first film, "Following," which contained several Nolan trademarks including a non-linear narrative, the director found himself with a modest budget for his studio debut, "Memento." Rather than dispose of any complex filmmaking techniques for this film, however, Nolan refused to dumb things down,...

Barking Dogs Never Bite
Slamdance Film Festival has announced it is going to move to Los Angeles from Utah in 2025.
The festival, which started off on the fringes of Sundance Film Festival in 1995, has since grown to a force to be reckoned with in its own right, with films getting their break there including Christopher Nolan's Following, Bong Joon-ho's Barking Dogs Never Bite and Matt Johnson's The Dirties.
It has traditionally run alongside Sundance in Park City, Utah, this year noticeably taking on a much more central and larger venue for its screenings. The switch saw an 18% rise in ticket sales. The festival said in a statement that the LA move will "allow it to expand its mission of supporting truly independent filmmakers" while giving better accessibility to attendees.

Looks like it’s not just Sundance that could be on the move. The Slamdance Film Festival, the smaller, independent stepsister festival to Sundance, has announced it will be leaving its long-time home of Park City, Utah and will relocate to Los Angeles beginning in 2025.
Next year’s Slamdance, which enters its 30th year after being founded in 1995, will take place in Los Angeles’ West Hollywood neighborhood at the Landmark Theatres Sunset and the DGA Theater Complex. The festival also traditionally runs in late January, generally around the same time as Sundance, but will now be scheduled for February 20-26, 2025.
Slamdance believes being in LA will offer the festival to continue to grow, and it shouldn’t hurt to be out of Sundance’s shadow.

At a time when the star system has started to fade and movie studios are blandly reasserting themselves as the true auteurs of Hollywood cinema, a soft-spoken British director with a flair for puzzles and a fiendish penchant for scarves has somehow become one of the most famous pop artists on the planet.
In less than two decades, Christopher Nolan has gone from an anonymous micro-budget filmmaker to a genuine household name, a figure whose cultural cachet now rivals that of Quentin Tarantino or Steven Spielberg. This, even though most people probably couldn’t pick Nolan out of a line-up. He’s a bonafide brand despite not being much of a personality; his films do all the talking for him, “Inception” going so far as to become modern vernacular’s go-to word for describing literally anything with layers.

Christopher Nolan is voicing his love of indie films while explaining why he’s unlikely to make another one.
The “Oppenheimer” writer-director, who got his start with indies “Following” and “Memento,” told Time magazine that he feels a “responsibility” to the filmmaking community to safeguard “large scale” resources and push the boundaries of technology onscreen.
“I’m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is,” Nolan said. “I know that there are so many filmmakers out there in the world who would give their eye teeth to have the resources I put together, and I feel I have the responsibility to use them in the most productive and interesting way.”
Nolan, however, added that his favorite recent films have been small-budget indies like “Past Lives” and “Aftersun,” calling both features “beautiful.” His “Oppenheimer” carried a production pricetag of $100 million...

In a major change of pace, this year’s Sundance Film Festival will open with 19 films on its opening day, Thursday, January 18, including the first of the Shorts programs, all starting as early as noon Mountain Time.
That’s a lot of movies, and it’s a reminder that for many industry folks this year, they can’t take that morning flight from Los Angeles into Salt Lake City on the first day and expect not to miss anything.
Because so many films are packed into that first day, the festival is also compressing all those movies, at least on the 18th, into a handful of Park City venues: the Eccles, the Egyptian, The Ray, the Library Center, and Prospector Square. Throughout the festival, attendees and press can also see movies at the Holiday Village Cinemas, the Redstone Cinemas multiplex outside of town, and The Park.

Friends star Matthew Perry died from “acute effects of ketamine,” the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office said today. The autopsy report also cited drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine — a drug used to treat opioid use disorder — as contributing to his death.
Ketamine is a drug used recreationally that dulls pain, causes forgetfulness, intoxication, disassociation and euphoria. It is also increasingly used under medical supervision to treat depression.
The manner of death was ruled an accident. Perry died October 28 at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. He was 54.
Friends ran from 1994-2004, co-starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow. Perry played Chandler Bing on the Manhattan-set sitcom, which was one of the most-watched shows on U.S. primetime.

The story of a young woman (Maika Monroe) who is relentlessly stalked by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter, it taps into primal fears such as death, abandonment, betrayal, and social ostracism. Hailed as a modern horror classic, it entrenches itself in the logic of grim and bloody fairy tales in which youngsters must fend for themselves and use their wits to outsmart and survive an evil adversary.

All know Christopher Nolan as the ‘IMAX Director’, shooting mega-budget Hollywood blockbusters like The Dark Night, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and the most recent super notable Oppenheimer. Every Nolan’s project is a filmmaking bombshell. Nolan loves IMAX cameras and he’s not afraid of investing tons of cash in the precious 65mm film stock, just to deliver his vision to the biggest screens available. This guy is responsible for the booming business of IMAX. Furthermore, Nolan is known for his approach...

Hot off the critic-voted list of The Best Movies of the Last 25 Years comes the results of a 64-director tournament meant to determine who the greatest director of that same time frame is. Coming out the victor was none other than Christopher Nolan, who just made the cut thanks to his debut, Following, coming out in 1998.
The 53-man (counting duos as one), 11-woman bracket determined that Nolan had the most prestige of everyone included, particularly the six competitors he defeated: Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse), Sam Mendes (1917), Jordan Peele (Get Out), and, in the finals, Denis Villeneuve (Dune). Villeneuve had his own strong competition, besting Lynne Ramsey (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Pete Docter (Up), Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant), Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), and Damien Chazelle (La La Land).

Movie maker Christopher Nolan made his first feature with little to no money before hitting it big with Memento. But the director shared his debut film was inspired by a real life crime.

Nolan’s cinematic debut was the 1998 indie flick Following. As its title suggests, the film was about a writer who stalks people to use their lives as material for his work. The Oppenheimer director first came up with the idea just by being around people. But the idea further grew after Nolan found himself the victim of a random and unexpected crime.
“You’d go out of your flat and you’d be surrounded by people,” Nolan once told Mental Floss. “I became interested in the idea of looking at individuals and saying, ‘What’s that person’s story?’ Right around that time,...

Cillian Murphy's latest role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" has garnered significant buzz and critical acclaim, with some predicting that his intimate, complex portrayal of the man behind the atomic bomb will earn him an Oscar nomination. Though Murphy is undoubtedly brilliant in the biographical epic, the Irish actor has had over 25 years of preparation for the role through a number of projects in film, TV, and theater.
Murphy, like many actors, began his acting career on stage. In 1996, he made his stage debut in Enda Walsh's play "Disco Pigs," which was later adapted into a feature film starring Murphy in 2001. By the early 2000s, the actor took on several roles, but his role as Jim in the post-apocalyptic horror film "28 Days Later" propelled him into Hollywood. In 2005, he starred in "Batman Begins" and began what would become a decades-long collaborative friendship with Christopher Nolan.

Kohn’s Corner is a weekly column about the challenges and opportunities of sustaining American film culture.
After years of blockbuster production driven by prefabricated superhero fandom, the summer of Barbenheimer is an unexpected delight. “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” show the potential for festival-anointed auteurs to worm their way into popular culture with smart and innovative projects. With “Barbie” already crossing half a billion dollars at the global box office and “Oppenheimer” at a formidable $300 million, the joint success of these very different movies seems to be telling Hollywood… something.
The most obvious takeaway from Barbenheimer: Audiences want originality and invention, not endless sequels and variations on what came before. Ok, let’s assume most studio bosses grasp this fundamental point. There’s more to it that. These films speak to a broader set of values and opportunities for studios to consider as they develop more movies that fickle audiences will consider worth their time.

Christopher Nolan remains one of the most significant filmmakers of the 21st century. The mere fact that stating this aloud invites a bit of controversy underlines how outsized a footprint the writer-director has left during the first 25 years of his career. Celebrated by some as a formative auteur in the lives of young cineastes, and derided by others as the patron saint of “film bros” who devour hyper-masculine Hollywood spectacle (particularly if it features capes), Nolan’s already built a formidable and debated legacy.
But in the summer of 2023, his impact was crystalized again when Nolan convinced one of the ever increasingly risk-averse Hollywood studios to invest more than $100 million into an R-rated, three-hour, and existentially despairing biopic, and then released it at the height of summer. That the movie opened bigger than most of the year’s alleged blockbusters, and bigger than any Nolan film not starring Batman, is...

There’s an enigmatic quality to the role of Christopher Nolan in the current filmmaking landscape, and one that stands apart from the fact that his films so often court ambiguity with explicit intent. From the Russian-nesting-doll antics of Inception to the magicians-as-filmmakers commentary of The Prestige, Nolan’s ambition within the realm of big-budget, broad audience spectacle is comparable to the likes of few. Looking back at his work thus far, what emerges—apart from his obsession with identity, reality, community, and obsession itself—is an artist who, heedless of his own shortcomings, is intent on challenging himself, a quality that salvages and even inverts a great many of his otherwise pedestrian choices. The purported originality of Inception says infinitely more about the cinematic vocabulary of those describing it as such than it does about the film itself.

In Michael Rabiger’s book “Directing: Film and Aesthetics,” Christopher Nolan provides a quote that speaks to the power of collaboration and his role in serving it as a filmmaker.
“As a director, I’m sort of a human lens through which everyone’s efforts are focused,” Nolan said. “A big part of my job is making decisions about how all the great talent that I’m working with blends into a single consciousness.” If Nolan’s job is to bring together the best talent in the business and have them work effortlessly together, then he’s been succeeding since his start as a feature film director over two decades ago.
Nolan made his debut in 1998 with the low-budget thriller “Following,” which paved the way for his festival breakout “Memento” in 2000. He’d direct Al Pacino and Robin Williams in “Insomnia” (the standalone title in Nolan’s filmography he did...

In the new MSNBC documentary “To End All War: Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb,” the impact of the 1945 nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki are seen in grisly detail: Archival footage from the U.S. military recorded days after the bombings show survivors covered in horrific burns, with sagging flesh and clothing seared to their bodies, as they stand in the wreckage of cities leveled to the ground. Although the documentary, which is now streaming on Peacock, was released in part to drum up hype for Christopher Nolan’s Universal-produced “Oppenheimer,” no such footage appears in his own movie.
Nolan defended the decision during a conversation after a screening of the movie in New York over the weekend. Christopher Nolan has become one of the most celebrated directors working in Hollywood since launching his career in 1998 with the neo-noir crime thriller “Following” and breaking through two years later with “Memento.” All of Nolan’s movies are influenced by the films he holds closest to his heart, whether it’s a 1927 classic from F. W. Murnau laying the groundwork for “Dunkirk” or science-fiction classics like “2001: A Space Odyssey” providing a backbone for “Interstellar.” Then there’s Nolan’s love of the James Bond franchise and the spy genre fueling his espionage thriller “Tenet.”
Now, two years after “Tenet” premiered to mixed reception, Nolan is back with “Oppenheimer.” His first for Universal, after a heavily publicized split with his old studio partner Warner Bros., the movie takes inspiration from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s 2005 biography “American Prometheus” to tell the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical...

It seems Camila Cabello is moving on from her and ex Shawn Mendes’ brief rekindled romance.
People confirms that the “Havana” singer is dating again after her and Mendes’ reconciliation has reportedly come to an end. The pair first sparked romance rumours when they reunited at Coachella back in April. At the time, a source told the outlet that the two, who broke up in November 2021 after two years of dating, “always seemed to have a special connection” and had “been friendly for months.”
Since the music festival, Cabello, 26, and Mendes, 24, hung out numerous times in Los Angeles and New York City and didn’t hold back from showing some Pda. They were last spotted publicly together in late May while attending Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stop in New Jersey.

Atomic bombs aren't for kids: Variety has confirmed that Christopher Nolan's upcoming biographical epic "Oppenheimer" has earned an R rating. The news arrives hot on the heels of a fresh inside look at the Universal film, which was shot in IMAX (as is Nolan's signature). IMAX prints of "Oppenheimer" are said to encompass "11 miles of film stock" that "weigh some 600 pounds."
The R rating is reportedly for "sexuality, nudity, and language," which is a little bit surprising for a film about harrowing violence and nuclear weapons. Personally, I'm glad that these details mean that "Oppenheimer" likely won't show the human cost of the atomic bomb (something I think about every time I watch the trailer) -- otherwise its rating would surely also include mention of disturbing images. Regardless, "Oppenheimer" is still poised to be extremely intense: the thriller tells the story of Manhattan Project scientist Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy...

Cillian Murphy thinks 'Oppenheimer' is a "sensational" film. The 46-year-old actor plays J. We're only a few months away from the release of Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," which will show the world the story of the man who changed it (for the worse) and a new three-minute trailer is here to give us a look at what we can expect.
As you might've guessed by the name, "Oppenheimer" is about J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Nolan regular Cillian Murphy), the greatest contributor to the creation of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer famously declared, "Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds" and the film will chronicle how he helped build the monster he came to abhor.
"Oppenheimer" will be Nolan's second World War II-set period piece after "Dunkirk," and it'll have plenty of his other trademarks as well. It was filmed in 65mm (both IMAX and large-format), shot by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (Nolan's Dp since "Interstellar"), and scored by Ludwig Göransson (who also...

Christopher Nolan is a blockbuster auteur, a filmmaker who makes big-budget tentpoles with his own unique artistic styles and approaches. Nolan's works always gained the good will of critics and cinephiles, but he became a household Hollywood name after the success of "Batman Begins" and its sequels, collectively referred to as the "Dark Knight trilogy." The director didn't make a sudden transition from small indie projects to major studio fare, though. He first experimented with a type of production that has become increasingly rarer in today's theatrical landscape: the mid-budget studio film.
Nolan made his first feature, "Following" (1998), on a minuscule budget of $6,000 Usd, a venture that the director called "extreme." Remarkably cost-efficient, the project established Nolan's penchant for film noir, nonlinear narratives, and black-and-white 16mm photography. He upped the price of his next film, "Memento" (2000), to $9 million Usd, but it was still an experiment in shooting a compelling narrative with minimal resources.

Imagine yourself trapped, helplessly bound in an emotional void of blacks and grays, condemned by forces that are out of your control. That's the vibe of the film noir genre. The French phrase translates to "black film," as in dark, both literally and figuratively. Created in the 1940s, the genre was crafted partly due to feelings of post-war dread as American soldiers returned home to a changing society.
World War II left many weary of U.S. politics and how it seeped into the film industry, often times via the Good Neighbor Policy. Additionally, the transition from fighting on the battlefield to mundane office jobs left returning veterans restless. There was also a new perceived threat at home. Women were deservedly more empowered, having done their part entering the workforce during the war. Times were changing, and the increasingly popular film noir style captured these melancholy feelings with distrustful and unsettling narratives,...
