The trippy feline caper
TheLittleSongbird19 September 2018
The Terrytoons are oddly interesting, mainly for anybody wanting to see (generally) older cartoons made by lesser known and lower-budget studios. They are a mixed bag in quality, with some better than others, often with outstanding music and with some mild amusement and charm and variable in animation, characterisation and content.

1940, like all the other years for Terrytoons, saw a hit and miss batch if more consistent than previous years somewhat. Of which 'Catnip Capers' is one of the high middle ones ranking it in correlation with the rest of the Terrytoons and one of the better 1940 cartoons. It is a decent if unexceptional cartoon with a lot of strengths and some problems as well. 'Catnip Capers' is also worth the look, completest sake is the main reason to see it but it's not the only reason.

Best asset is the music, which predictably is incredible. It is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is great fun to listen to and full of lively energy, doing so well with enhancing the action. The ambitious, elaborate detail in the backgrounds is still great to see, as is the comparatively improved fluidity of drawing and movement, and some synchronisation in movement and sound is neat. Colour is vibrant.

A number of well timed and amusing moments in the second half, some imaginative and there is some zest and natural charm, and parts of it and the basic set up are nicely done. The cat is an endearing and amusing character, definitely the cartoon's most interesting character. After a slow start, 'Catnip Capers' picks up with particularly once the hallucinatory elements kick in, where it becomes visually imaginative and the trippiness is appropriately nightmarish.

A few of the transitions are not always polished on the other hand.

Likewise, the story is paper thin and formulaic with not an awful lot to it (like the cartoon in general). In terms of gags, a few lack freshness and wit to work properly. It is a little slow and unimaginative to start with and the mice characters are very bland.

Summing up, above average and not bad at all, though also not great. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Trippy Terrytoons picture for its time
Mark_McD12 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The Terrytoons of this era could run a gamut from good to bad to inexplicable. This one is pretty good. It's the usual cat vs. mice scenario, with an unnamed cat who occasionally addresses the audience in an incongruous voice-over. While tormenting a house full of mice, a box of catnip falls on him from a high shelf. This cat can read the word "Catnip," but doesn't know what it is, so he takes a deep sniff of it and gets drunk, then starts having hallucinations. His trip includes a pink elephant lifted directly from "Dumbo," human-sized mice in harem girl costumes, and a descent to kitty hell. Somewhat derivative, but some of the designs and backgrounds are very well-done.

Another favorite Terrytoon with trippines

Here is a cartoon I had never heard of until I watched it on YouTube. It is another favourite cartoon by Paul Terry.

I thought the animation was great in this cartoon about a cat's trippy, hallucinating dream after sniffing catnip when a group of mice dumped it on him. First, a chair and curtains morph into a flying elephant. Then the elephant morphs into a carpet that takes him to a palace of oriental splendour, with pretty dancing cat girls. When giant, demonic mice chase him, things get nightmarish.

I have nothing else to say about this cartoon; other than that, I love it, and it's another favorite of "Terrytoons."

"Reefer Madness" and "Lost Weekend"... for cats!
robcat207527 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I had to go check to make sure this was really a Terrytoon. It starts out like a regular cat and mouse cartoon but... wow!

Someone must have been having trouble getting off the sauce and the the reefer and the blow when they wrote this one. This is surprisingly elaborate for a Terrytoon. How did this happen? Were the bean counters out sick for a month? Was the poor-quality-assurance team on strike?

It is not funny, it's better than that... it's nightmarish.
