- When attacked by two dogs, Joe Gilmore leaves them on the desert to die. Later one of the dogs saves John Blake from drowning. Men arrive claiming the dog is killing their chickens. They want to kill the dog but John convinces them the dog's fate should be determined by a trial.—Maurice VanAuken <mvanauken@a1access.net>
- Old Frank Gilmore (Horace B. Carpenter), real-estate operator in the mountain town of Running Springs, takes in two dogs, "Captain" and "Lady", on a bad debt but has little time to see to them. Mary Carson (Marion Shilling), who comes in to take care of Gilmore's bookkeeping, makes friends with the dogs. Gilmore's shiftless son, Joe (Eddie Phillips), tries to force his attentions upon Mary and "Captain" defends her, leaving wounds on Joe's neck and hands. John Blake (Steve Pendleton), young attorney, comes to town and he and Mary are attracted to each other, with the encouragement of Reb Collins (Reb Russell), the stagecoach driver. Gilmore, thinking the attacked on his son was unprovoked, tells him to take the dogs to an old miner's place out in the desert, but Joe leaves them in the desert, muzzled, and without a chance for life. The dogs survive and "Lady" has a litter of puppies. "Captain" has to raid the chicken coops of the farmers and ranchers to obtain food for his family. A posse is formed to capture the chicken-thief. "Captain" saves Blake from drowning but is captured by Joe. Blake demands that "Captain" be tried by a jury before being put to death, and serves as the dog's defense attorney.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
