The IDA also said today that its 2020 ceremony is going virtual on January 21.
“The nominees present an inspiring and urgent range of stories from around the globe,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA. “The broad range of subjects and approaches to storytelling underscores that documentary is our most exciting form of cultural expression, a vital art form and a crucial element of democratic dialogue.”
Ten films are up for the marquee Best Feature award: Collective, Crip Camp (Netflix), Gunda (Neon), MLK/FBI (IFC Films), The Reason I Jump (Kino Lorber), Reunited, Softie, Time, The Truffle Hunters (Sony Pictures Classics) and Welcome to Chechnya (HBO).
The helmers of five of those films also are up for Best Director: Garrett Bradley (Time), Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw (The Truffle Hunters), Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp), Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI) and Jerry Rothwell (The Reason I Jump).
On the TV side, five programs will vie for Best Curated Series): ESPN’s 30 for 30, PBS’ American Experience, Thirteen Productions’ American Masters, Illinois Public Media’s Reel Midwest and PBS/World Channel’s Reel South.

Up for Best Multi-Part Documentary are Asian Americans (PBS), Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered (HBO), City So Real (National Geographic), Hillary (Hulu) and Lenox Hill (Netflix).
“This is a year that has been one of reflection, looking inwards, and living life differently than we have always known it to be,” said James Costa, co-chair of the Feature Documentary Nominating Committee and IDA Board of Directors’ co-vice president. “Through the art of filmmaking these films gave us an opportunity to truly look and learn through the lenses of others.”

The latest works by domestic filmmakers Maia Martiniak, Lucia Kašová, Vladislava Sárkány and Jakub Julény will be premiered during the upcoming, online iteration of the festival. The 21st edition of the One World International Documentary Film Festival (5-11 November) has been transformed from an on-site event held in the capital of Slovakia into a nationwide, online affair. “Film festivals, and One World in particular, are magical thanks to the closeness, the mutual sharing of emotions in the cinema and the fiery discussions after the screenings. We have great respect for gatherings that have done it in their own way, safely and yet still in cinemas. For One World, this year will be an exciting experiment and a trial by fire. However, we have pulled off a daring feat – we will feed the audience with intellectual food, with the addition of some human heat during outdoor activities," says artistic director...

In a game of strategy and social bonds, challenge strength remains an important component in “Survivor” 20 years later. Opinion is split on how much value there is in Immunity Challenge wins, but more often than not, they have helped players beast their way to the end and even with the $1 million prize. Examples include Tom Westman (“Palau”), Rob Mariano (“Redemption Island”), Kim Spradlin (“One World”) and Mike Holloway (“Worlds Apart”).
Other challenge beasts are able to win a bunch of challenges but just come up short in the end. Colby Donaldson is one of the original cases of this, and we have seen players like Ozzy Lusth, Terry Deitz, Spencer Bledsoe and Brad Culpepper do the same, without claiming the title of Sole Survivor. Then there are players like Joe Anglim, who are just so good at challenges that they must be voted out the minute they lose an Immunity Challenge.

The Wailers teach valuable lessons in the video for “Philosophy of Life,” a track featuring Paul Anthony from their new album One World.
Written and co-directed by Emilio Estefan, the video features the band performing through various television sets, stacked on top of each other. A couple engages in a boxing match, while others hold the Bible and pray. Later, the musicians gather in a bus and perform.

In November 1984, Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)” dethroned Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You” to take the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was a brash fusion of soul, reggae, R&b, and pop unlike anything that had been heard before on Top 40 radio, and the singer followed it up with equally eclectic hits like “Loverboy,” “Suddenly,” and “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going.”

On Monday morning, not that much more than 24 hours after “Global Goal: Unite for Our Future” wrapped up Saturday night, the chief force behind that worldwide broadcast/streaming event, Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans, was still moving like a jack-rabbit.
Before it even hit the air, “Global Goal” had helped raise $6.9 billion from governments, entrepreneurs and foundations for Covid-19 vaccines and racial/sexual/social injustice causes. When Variety caught up with him Monday, Evans was already moving on to other philanthropic endeavors, including fall events aimed at the pre-election moment, and this morning’s announcement launching “The Juneteenth Pledge” with Pharrell Williams, Kenya Barris and Van Jones, aimed at rallying the private sector around making June 19 a paid holiday in the United States. “It’s a busy morning,” he said, as he got on the phone to discuss the last several months of Global Citizenry.

Back in April, Global Citizen pulled off one of the biggest — and certainly one of the most unprecedented — musical events ever: A massive virtual advocacy festival, organized in a couple of weeks, boasting a multi-generational lineup of talent that performed from their homes at the start of the Covid-19 crisis. It was a huge success, and a tough act to follow, but two months later, Global Citizen set out to out-do itself with another concert special that not only reflected where we are now but aimed at an even higher philanthropic target.

Keith Urban teams up with Florida Georgia Line producer Joey Moi for his new song “Polaroid,” a breezy, evocative jam that, like “The Fighter,” stands as one of Urban’s more electronic-focused musical adventures.
Its accompanying music video is mesmerizing, utilizing a clever filmmaking approach to put the singer-guitarist in the middle of the action at a backyard pool party. Couples kiss, barbecues flame out of control, and some guy naturally falls into the water, all captured in a freeze-frame technique.

Keith Urban got a little help from himself and also himself during Global Citizen’s “One World” concert on Saturday, April 18th, performing a cover of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” with two clones as his backing band. The concert raised $128 million in funds for Covid-19 relief.
Seated on a stool in his home studio, Urban presses play on a little console to start up a programmed drum rhythm and begins strumming his acoustic guitar. He sings a portion of the opening verse alone, tapping out some percussive rhythms on his guitar,...

Kacey Musgraves performed a solo piano rendition of her Golden Hour ballad “Rainbow” during Global Citizen’s One World: Together at Home special to raise money for Covid-19 relief.

On Wednesday night 20 “Survivor” champions will begin their battle for the $2 million prize that comes with being named “Sole Survivor” of Season 40, “Winners at War.” Ten of those champions are the fiercest, most competitive and dynamic players to ever win the game. The other ten are men. Vote below in our poll to determine which female “Survivor” champion you are most rooting for this season.
Of all the women on this cast, Sandra Diaz-Twine is the name you’re probably most familiar with. Going into this cycle she remains the only player to ever win twice — first in Season 7 “Pearl Islands” and again in Season 20 “Heroes vs. Villains.” Unless she pulls off the seemingly impossible and wins again, one of her competitors will join her in that double win category. It could be Parvati Shallow, who lost to Sandra by only a few votes in the Season 20 finale. Parvati entered...

“California Dreams” may have been a hit 1990s sitcom, airing for four years on Saturday mornings on Tnbc, but aside from a 2010 performance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” its cast has rarely come back together publicly in the almost 25 years since the band-within-the-show strummed its last note. But then came reboot and revival culture, and series stars Jennie Kwan and Kelly Packard got an idea for a reunion concert that Packard says became “our love project.”
As they tell it, Packard, who played bass player Tiffani Smith in the series, and co-star Kwan, who played vocalist Samantha “Sam” Woo, were at a concert for another popular 1990s entity when they saw the wild reaction of the crowd. Packard turned to Kwan to ask why they couldn’t do something similar. “I said, ‘We can, we just have to do it ourselves,'” Kwan tells Variety.

20. Jenn Brown (Worlds Apart) — Jenn is almost like too cool to actually make our list, but her laissez faire attitude to playing the game is what makes her so attractive in the first place.
19. Amber Brkich — Amber was the All-Stars champion that no one saw coming because of her stealthy play and ability to wrap one of the game’s most notorious men around her finger. Though not exactly a black widow, her cunning and competitive nature increase her allure.
