Pretty boring by today's standards.
gangstahippie10 August 2006
Rated E.

Donkey Kong is the first game in the series of sequels and spin off's to the donkey kong series.A good aspect of the game is it introduces Donkey Kong,Princess and Mario who would become very famous in about four years with Super Mario Bros.Anyway this game was pretty good for 1981.The gameplay was fun and the graphics were normal for the 80's.However games have really changed in terms of graphics and gameplay.Donkey Kong seems very dated now.But its a sort of fun game to play if you have nothing else to do.You play as Jumpman(or Mario) and you must rescue Princess from a big giant ape called Donkey Kong(who looks much different from today's games). You must dodge barrels that DK throws at you.Donkey Kong is a good game for the 80's but dated for today.

The first Mario game!
The_Wagon22 May 2006
This arcade game was the first game to ever feature Mario, who was then known as Jump Man. He became Mario in the 1983 arcade hit Mario Bros, which is the first appearance of Luigi. Donkey Kong is also the first game to feature Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong kidnaps Mario's girlfriend Pauline, and Mario must save her. You have to go through 3(the arcade version had 4) levels and dodge barrels that are thrown at you by DK. There are other things to avoid like fireballs and more. Now, this game isn't that good. It's mediocre. It was great many years ago, but now, not so great. If you haven't played it, borrow it from a friend who has an NES, Atari, or Collecovision. It's also on GBA. Don't pay the 20 dollar price for the GBA version. Borrow, don't buy. I give this a 6 out of 10.

Donkey Kong (1981) Classic, simple and amazing
claszdsburrogato29 March 2023
The game that gave rise to our great pop culture character, Mario Bros. It's a simple, short and very old game and maybe all that makes this game so cool. It is not an excellent or super well developed game like recent games, but that is due to the time the game was created, where games were much simpler compared to the most recent ones. Even though it's very basic, the game still manages to be a lot of fun and create remarkable characters that will come back later and become the greatest characters in games. Many people will be prejudiced against it for being from 1981, but it, in its own way, is a very beautiful game. And certainly what draws the most attention in this game are the sound effects that are very striking and impressive. If you have the opportunity to play, please play. This, like it or not, is one of the greatest milestones in video game history.

The game that started it all
rasmus-917 April 2000
Back in 1981 Nintendo was on the verge of bankruptcy. So the hired this unknown man called Shigeru Miyamoto to do a game for them.

The game was called Donkey Kong and starred a little carpenter called Jump Man who would later change his name to Mario and become the most famous videogame-hero of all time.

The game itself was a the time revolutionary. Not only was the first real platformer, but it was also the first game with a story of some sort.

Today the game is of course outdated, but it still stands as one of the most important games ever.

This game was a giant stepping stone to Mario's success!
cornflake1018 July 2002
Many people think that the only thing about Nintendo is consoles and games. Actually, only about 70% of it is. In 1890 Nintendo was founded by a Japanese man named Fusajiro Yamauchi, and they were a successful card company. By the 1950s their company had expanded and by the 1970s they were selling toys. Due to the popularity of video game consoles they decided to make their own. They hired Nintendo's soon-to-be-top-man Shigeru Miyamoto in 1977 and they created the Game-And-Watch device. It failed miserably and Nintendo were starting to run out of money. So in 1980 Shigeru promised to make things right when he started developing his new game, DONKEY KONG. The game was finished by 1981 and released on arcades worldwide. Unbelievably the game was a massive success and Miyamoto had saved Nintendo. This game starred Jumpman the carpenter (soon to become Mario the plumber), a giant, stupid ape called Donkey Kong, and Mario's girlfriend Pauline. Jumpman has to climb a giant construction site to save Pauline, but Donkey Kong has planned many tricks and traps which Jumpman must get past. The game is very fun and a huge revolution for Nintendo. Yes, it is over 20 years since the excitement began and now gamers of today would laugh in the face of this game, it is definitely one of the greatest classics ever to come from the greatest game company of all time.

Donkey Kong is and always will be THE BEST if you have nothing else better to do
safeinheaven10 July 2007
I was crazy about King Kong both 1933 and 1976 versions. When I turned 10 in 1981 at Addalin's Palace in the Granite Run Mall, my brother introduced me to Donkey King . . . it featured "King Kong" throwing barrels down at Mario who was trying to rescue a kidnapped girl JUST LIKE KING KONG in the sense of the kidnapped girl . . Donkey Kong therefore became a mighty Joe young descendant my mind. Then the next year COLECOVISION brought Donkey Kong home and followed by the LED stand alone version. After which Donkey Kong Jr and Donkey Kong 3 cam along. I still have my two-screen LCD Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong 2 games in my nightstand. My reflexes are just as sharp too even. Of course some people will not find this helpful. But I'm nuts about Donkey Kong. and of course we cant forget the awesome ADAM computer super game packs and the Atari 2600 King Kong and Odyssey 2's Pick-AX Pete spin offs. PLEASE RELSEASE DONKEY KONH for Gamecube and Wii in its original form!!!!

''How high can you get?''
Rabical-9110 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As someone far too young to remember this game first time round, my first experience with it did not come until about two years back when myself along with my wife and son attended a video games exhibition at our local museum, where many retro arcade games were available for people to enjoy such as 'Elevator Action', 'Space Invaders', 'Defender' and, of course, 'Donkey Kong'. I had never really bothered with the game until my visit to the museum, however shortly after playing it I was hooked. I spent so long on the arcade machine that people who were queuing up to have a shot gave up waiting and walked off. After leaving the museum, I was then on a mission to find a copy of this game.

On Christmas day last year my wish came true when as a present my dear wife presented me with an NES ( Nintendo Entertainment System ) console complete with games, one of which of course was 'Donkey Kong'. I could not have been happier.

'Donkey Kong' is a gorilla who kidnaps a damsel named Pauline and takes her atop a rather dangerous looking scaffolding. Her knight in shining armor ( who you must control ) comes in the shape of Mario ( or 'Jumpman' as he was known then ). Mario must attempt to rescue the damsel in distress from the ape ( who attempts to stop you by chucking large wooden barrels down at you ) by successfully reaching the top of the scaffold and defeating Kong.

It does not take very long to complete though all the same requires skill and patience. Sadly, with things like 'Minecraft' ( which I loathe ) flooding the games market these days, 'Donkey Kong' does not stand up anywhere near as well as it once did. Gamers these days are notoriously picky and if their games do not have high-tech graphics with multi-player mode or anything else modern they do not want to know. Not me, give me 'Donkey Kong' anytime.

To give you an idea of how big the character once was, 'The Simpsons' episode 'The Springfield Files' featured 'Donkey Kong' appearing outside Noiseland Arcade waiting to be greeted by fans, to which 'Wiseguy' appeared and told him ''You just are not a draw anymore!''. 'Donkey Kong' then responded by throwing a barrel at his head, making him realise that Kong has 'still got it!'. Also last year he was used by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling in their hilarious blockbuster 'Pixels' starring Adam Sandler.

One of the early titles of the Arcade
Terryfan8 July 2015
Donkey Kong started off as the main antagonist of this video game despite the title being "Donkey Kong". Jumpman in this game who would later become known as Mario the character we know and love today as he goes to save Pauline from Donkey Kong.

The game is a arcade title so you will be doing a lot of jumping and dodging attacks from Donkey Kong but you are given a hammer to defend yourself just use it wisely

Each level gets more challenging as you play so you better be on your toes the whole time or it's game over

Controls and graphics are what you would expect in a Arcade game but this game was release in 1981 so it is easy to predict that most would be turn off by this game but they should take note that this was one of the biggest hits in video game history so let's keep that in mind this is one of the most important games to be release so give it some respect

The main issue with this game is that it is really a pain often times to avoid the attacking barrels that Donkey Kong throw at you so if you are just one second late you'll be in trouble

But still Donkey Kong is a important game despite this so give this Arcade classic some love

I give Donkey Kong an 7 out of 10

How high can you get?
Mister-620 February 2002
Donkey Kong: the game, the myth, the monkey!

In any discussion of classic video games, Donkey Kong will turn up automatically (right behind Pac Man, maybe) and rightly so, since this is one of the best games of the '80s featuring our man Mario!

Seems the beautiful Princess has been captured by the nasty Donkey (short for "Darned-Monkey"?) Kong, who climbs up building girders and stomps, beats his chest and throws flammable barrels at Mario to warn him away. Your mission: climb, jump and use your clown hammer to beat back the barrels and flames that block your way and defeat the ape and save the day.

How well you do depends on, as the game asks, how high you can get up the buildings you must climb. It's not as easy as it sounds, and both Atari and Dan Kitchen are to be commended for creating an addictive game that you'll have fun with trying to get the Princess time and time again.

I know my allowance was depleted weekly trying to get the best of that game. How much more can you praise a game than that?

Ten stars and a gold-plated banana for "Donkey Kong", the king of video games! Yay, Mario!

Sorry Atari, but that did not look remotely like an ape.
Aaron137529 April 2012
Donkey Kong took arcades by storm, I remember waiting in line to play this thing and I promptly got wiped out. I was so psyched when it was going to hit the Atari 2600 and I got my parents to buy it for me. I do not want to say I was disappointed...well, yes I was. The game play is about the same, but the graphics are most certainly different. Being a kid and not understanding why it looked different it made me a bit sad. Still, I had a bit of fun with this one as Mario at least looked a bit like Mario and the barrel jumping was the same. And so were the levels basically, all two of them. Wait a minute!?! In the arcade, you had three stages. At the end of the first stage you would go to this place where the dreaded Donkey Kong would throw springs and you had like elevators to jump on. Then came the stage where you undo the girders causing the monkey to fall on his head. The middle stage is gone, I am guessing the Atari could not handle it, but they also cut the monkey falling down. That kind of sucks, all you get for your trouble is a melody. So while it was sort of fun, the Atari 2600 is very bare bones.

Barrel of Fun
hellraiser78 March 2023
This is one of my favorite video games of all time. I was a kid from the 80's, I remember first discovering and playing this game at the Burger Ranch in Yakima, WA, I loved the game then and I love it now. The game was a phenomenon as there really wasn't anything like it at the time, it's a timeless classic that is just about everywhere now. It was one of challenges in the under the radar film "Pixels" and there was that documentary "The King of Kong". I even see arcade cabinets of this in about every retro arcade bar but also the pinball/arcade conventions like the one I annually attend in Tacoma, WA.

The game you can also say was the kickoff for two of video games iconic characters Mario and Donkey Kong, whom after this game had plenty of games after and years to come.

The game was one of the first in platform action games, this one unlike most of the one's your familiar with is more a contained action platform games as the entire level and action is contained in one screen. I personally like those kinds of platform action games because the action is here, now, straight to the point, but also that there are always new challenges ahead.

The graphical presentation was sophisticated and revolutionary for it's time, from the level designs which to me are the real star of the game. Really how well designed they are as each of them by their nature are a vertical maze puzzle, but I also like that each of them are based on a blue collar setting which not just fits Donkey Kong as he's just like any other super-sized foe/monster from the movies are attracted to tall super structures like a magnet. But it has that relatability and familiarity feel to it, as if what's happening in the game is happening in our everyday existence.

Also, the character models looked like actually characters, they looked like the kind of characters you'd see from the 80's cartoon shows.

From our main hero Mario, whom is his usual self as he's small. I just thought it was cool that you got to play a hero that looks like any ordinary joe, as we see he' s in that blue collar get up. But also like the fact that he's small which once again increases that relatability factor as that makes him a bit of an underdog.

We can easily see that Mario physically is no match for Donkey Kong physically, that's impossible. But despite outmatched physically, we see Mario is far from helpless and is strong in other ways as we see he has speed, reflexes and is probably a double dutch champ as he's got one heck of a jump. I like this too showing that you don't need to be a person of muscle to be a hero and fight against evil, and that you can be strong in more ways than one.

And of course, our main villain Donkey Kong, the franchise over the years with this character has been interesting as it seems to be divided into two separate camps. In one, there are the "Donkey Kong Country" and "Mario Kart" games where he's a good guy. Another which are the "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" games where he's a bad guy and this game falls into the camp where he's the bad guy.

Donkey Kong in the game seemed a little scary as a kid, because the guy was just so huge and mean looking with that angry grin all the time, never was sure what the heck he was so mad about. Even those little noises made whenever we saw his character move, yeah I know little noises but video game characters never really did things like that at the time, so you can easily see how any gamers back then would feel a little nervous. But despite his size and strength as we see in the game he's not unbeatable.

I like the sound effects and even music which also made the game revolutionary for its time because video games at the time never had any music except the kind you brought if you owned a Walkman. The music is more like little tunes then music but still it sounded good and have become iconic tunes that you could probably hear from certain ring tones or just plain humming.

But those tunes really helped move the game because it help motive you just keep going much like with music while doing dance aerobics which makes sense as that was also a big thing in the 80's. I also like that the character you play make sounds as well, most notably whenever Mario runs and jumps which to me is music to my ears; but it was also by it's nature really action detection it helped in giving the actions you execute weight.

The gameplay is great as it's your simple basic platform action where it's going from point A to B, jumping, and surviving. But that's all you really need in the game and personally that's how I like it as less can be more. The game is just a bit on the hard side as there are a lot of things you really must pay attention to as there are defensive measures that come your way fast.

Even like that you also not just have to simply go from point A to B but you have to actually in some places think before you move, though don't take too much time as trouble constantly comes your way mainly fireballs with minds of their own. I like that each of the stages are different which means a different kind of challenge, and that was part of the joy of the game as it taught you to adapt and think sometimes before you acted. And of course, one of the highlights is that hammer, which was cool almost made you feel invincible as it temporarily destroyed all the oncoming barrels but also a way to rack up more points.

My favorite stage and this is no surprise is of course the pie factory stage, it was just kind of cool at the time seeing a place that can mass produce pies though also kind of daft as who'd of though just by jumping or getting bumped by giant pies, how the heck anyone can die from that is anyone's guess; and on a side note the pies made me hungry.

Anyway, it's just a cool stage because it's sort of a momentum maze as there are a lot of convey belts that go different directions along with machinery that are just mass producing all kinds of things to kill you. The game is also rewarding as you get to the top and complete each level, you see you can say a mini cut scene to let you know your next mission but also that your efforts paid off.

Donkey Kong is a vintage classic that's a barrel of fun.

Rating: 4 stars.

Rescue Lady Love from the Crazy Ape
Aegelis20 July 2021
On release, there were some very impressive features including plenty of colour, excellent sound, and overall game play. Controls are simple, intuitive, objective is clear which is a great lure for someone wandering an arcade for the first time. "I can do this!" which later turned into "it's on like Donkey Kong!" for good reason. The goal is achievable to reach your princess, then the game steps it up a notch to see where your break-point is on repeating.

Although the controls are fairly smooth, there are a few 'sticking points' like at the top of a ladder or a jump that doesn't quite happen the way that it should. Not a lot of story in Donkey Kong, but nevertheless satisfying when succeeding.

It may have been good in 1981 but it's just total crap now
CuriosityKilledShawn31 July 2005
I remember playing this game only once on one of those table arcade machines with screen underneath the glass (retro-arcade goers will remember what I am talking about, gibberish to anyone else) in the totally abandoned passenger lounge in a totally deserted ferry on the way to the Isle of Skye in 1992. Even a mere 11 years after it originally came out and with gaming technology passing from the C64 to the Sega/SNES this still seemed like crap.

You play as Mario (called Jumpman in his first appearance) and your goal is to defeat Donkey Kong, a big monkey. In order to do this you must climb up ladders, ascending platforms and avoiding rolling barrels. It was very hard and not much fun. And even if your a serious retro-gamer you'll probably still find this one loosing its appeal after a few minutes.

Graphics C Sound D- Gameplay D Lasting Appeal F

Outdated? Maybe. A classic? Definitely.
Op_Prime21 September 2001
This game came out twenty years ago and remains one of the most important video games ever. Due in part because it was the first to have a real story. However, it is mainly because this was the first appearance of the most famous video game character, Mario. Of course, he's known as Jump Man, a carpenter, in this game.

In the game, you play Jump Man and have to rescue a girl from Donkey Kong. Of course, you have to dodge all sorts of traps along the way. The graphics are vastly outdated compared to today's standards, but this game totally rocks. Thumbs up!

Donkey Kong

Warning: Spoilers
Donkey Kong isn't exactly scintillating stuff. You have directional arrows and a jump button, going up ladders and avoiding barrels and flame guys, repeating the same three levels. Give me "Frogger" any day. The hammer's kind of annoying as you can't go up the ladder or jump with it, so it slows you down as you have to wait for it to expire when there's nothing to hit.

Of course this was the starting block for the character and others, as you've got Donkey Kong in "Mario Kart" and "Super Smash Bros" etc and its very own all-time great in "Donkey Kong Country." This however, does not affect my rating.

Classic video game
MovieAddict201627 May 2005
The first time I played "Donkey Kong" was on N64 believe it or not - it was included as an easter egg no "Donkey Kong 64" which was, like "Mario 64," a 3-D Kong adventure.

At one point in the game, playing as Kong, you get to activate an old arcade game and play the original 1981 version of the video game.

It's actually a great deal of fun, and very hard at times to progress. You play as Jumpman (Mario before he was given a name I suppose), a little guy in a red cap who jumps up and down a lot. You have to progress through levels jumping over objects that Donkey Kong throws at you. Your object is to rescue the girl he is holding hostage. (Ah, a nice King Kong homage.) Overall this is a very fun classic video game that still holds up to this day despite its poor graphics. A must-play for any gamer!

Sure this game is old, but it still fun to play. Whocares the graphics are outdated. This game is very fun, that's one of the main reasons we play video games. This is a very challenging game. You will never get tired of playing Donkey Kong, it is a very addictive game.

might be your mom's game, but still fun.
The_Light_Triton24 August 2005
You can bet a hundred bucks to someone that they've played this game. people have played this for generations, and all of them have had fun, one way or another.

Donkey Kong, a giant ape, breaks out from the local Zoo (or at least i think he did.) and kidnaps a woman named Paula. so, it's up to jump-man (also known as Mario) to go and rescue this woman, and defeat the monkey who stole her.

Donkey Kong has come a long way. from enemy, to good guy, and to rhythm game icon. in the second version of the donkey Kong games, he was captured and Mario was holding him there. so Mario isn't all you think he is. but nowadays, DK and Mario don't hate each other. they just beat each other up every now and then. play super smash bros to do stage a fight between the 2.

this outdated, but fun game gets 8/10

An important moment in video games.
dootuss23 January 2002
Without a doubt, "Donkey Kong" marked a big moment in video game history. It was the first ever video game to have a story, and it introduced us to a carpenter named "Jumpman" (soon to be known as Mario of "Super Mario Brothers" fame) who had to save his girlfriend from the clutches of Donkey Kong while avoiding enemies like rolling barrels. While the game is outdated by today's standards of video games, it's still worth a playing.

In Regards To The Ridiculous Saturday Morning Cartoon...
marshottentot27 December 2005
During the 1980's video games became an incredible phenomenon in America. Kids went crazy and stole any quarter they could find (much to your Stormed-The-Beaches-At-Normandy-Grampa's dismay), parents loved the empty house (time to make with the 'Whoopie'), One guy even shot some poor fool for cutting in line to play Pac Man!! Needless to say, the children's entertainment market paniced!! How can Scrappy Doo possibly compete with Mr.Do? They did what any business would and assimilated the form. In so doing, they effectively shot themselves in the head with a slow motion Gatling gun filled with video game rounds. It would take a year and a half to make the kill.

Donkey Kong was one of these lethal rounds! Your basic idea was this: Mario (I'm not sure if he was called Mario or not) is an evil zookeeper who chased the fun loving Donkey Kong around. Donkey Kong would always escape and cry in triumph "Don-KEEEEE*KONG!!"

That's it. AWFUL!
