Ace director Donald Siegel uses superior direction to transform a so-so who-dunnit into a thrilling big screen spectacle, using the Grand Canyon as a backdrop for A multiple murder set in an Arizona mining town in decline. The cameraman focusing on the scenery and the hair-raising stuntwork — everything we see is real — is the great Burnett Guffey.

The Celebrity Apprentice is back on January 4th, and it looks like another unbelievable season pitting celebrities of varying (and questionable) “List” rankings against each other in a series of “events” that mean nothing beyond who can sucker in the most other celebrities to donate money.
That may sound negative, but overall the show is one of my favorites, and one that I can’t support enough. Now, it isn’t that I enjoy watching the bizarre clashes between people you forgot existed, people who have to be identified to justify their celebrity status, and people dumb enough to show up because they were only invited for their hate-watch draw. The show occasionally has something interesting going on in the weekly contest, but the general “celebrities are just as nuts as the regular people we con into signing up for this,” appeal doesn’t really work for me. No, it...

Betty White can't remember what she wore to her first Emmys, but she has a good excuse - it was 63 years ago! "I haven't a clue," White tells People of her first time at the ceremony in 1951. "I'm sorry. I should, but I don't have a clue." But the Hot in Cleveland star - who is nominated this year for hosting Betty White's Off Their Rockers on Lifetime - has no trouble recalling her win for Most Outstanding Female Personality, a Los Angeles regional award she won in 1952. "Zsa Zsa Gabor was also nominated and was at my table. When...

On Joan:
"I've always loved my height. Joan and I were definitely flirting. We had some moments where we locked eyes and thought about what could have been."

"At an early age. I'm not the most attractive fella. I'm not a Billy Dee Williams. Personality is everything."
On his views about settling down:
"No man wants to settle down. It happens. Eventually you're going to bump into somebody that makes you, Hmm, I don't mind seeing this person every day.

Actor who made her name in comedy films as an acid-tongued, gravel-voiced tyrant
Eileen Brennan, who has died aged 80, had been a stage actor since the late 1950s, but it was as a largely comic presence in Us cinema of the 1970s and early 1980s that she was most widely admired. As the pitiless Captain Doreen Lewis, putting a dippy new recruit – Goldie Hawn – through her paces in the hit military comedy Private Benjamin (1980), she wore her trademark look: a solid frizz of red hair, a clenched, sneering smile and an expression of withering incredulity. Then there was the gravelly voice: a heard-it-all whine to match that seen-it-all face. It sounded like bourbon on the rocks. Actual rocks, that is.
Captain Lewis epitomised the sort of role Brennan was best at – and which she was still playing as late as 2001, when she made the first in a run of appearances...

America's wacky Grandma, Betty White, has another title to add to her award-winning career -- "Most Trusted Personality."
In a Reuters/Ipsos poll, the 89-year-old "Hot in Cleveland" star beat out Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Morgan Freeman and Kate Middleton for the honor, scoring a 69 percent trustworthiness rating. She also came out on top in terms of popularity, with 86 percent of those polled having a favorable opinion of her.
White, whose career in Hollywood dates back 60 years, burst back onto the scene following her appearance at the 2006 William Shatner roast. Since then the one-time "Golden Girl" has been in as active as anyone, starring in commercials, TV and film. She is currently up for an Emmy for her role as Elka Ostrovsky, the Polish caretaker on the TV Land series.
The survey polled 2,012 Americans; here's a link to the full survey results.
