- Throughout the series, the words bastard, bitch, shit, piss, tart, wanker, slag, slut and whore. Religious expletives are also used.
- The word "fuck" is rarely used. In season one, a character is seen writing the word on a piece of paper which is clearly visible for a brief moment, and once on a a toilet wall. The word was used twice in season seven.

- Although alcohol is banned from prisons, the female prisoners have had it smuggled in. Characters have been seen drinking at times, and have a lot been seen drunk.
- Most of the characters smoke cigarettes.

- Female character's breasts have been shown, with some brief images, to clearly visible images. Female character's bare buttocks have clearly been visible. A male character has been seen fully naked from behind and his buttocks are clearly visible. A male character's penis has been very briefly visible.
- A female character pulls up her skirt and a male character proceeds to have sex with her, with a lot of moaning and groaning is heard. A man and woman begin to kiss and lay down on a bed, only for the man to rape the woman when she begs him to stop. Some scenes of fellatio have been suggested. A female character performs a hand job on a male character. Two female characters begin to kiss and remove clothes and in are later seen in bed together. Two female characters are seen having sex in bed.
Violence & Gore
- Violence throughout. Female characters seen fighting a lot, including slapping, punching and kicking. Some Instances include a female character being violently strip searched by other prisoners, a prisoner being scaled by hot water in the vaginal area, two female characters fight and one headbutts the other, a nun is repeatedly beaten by a female inmate. in two instances, two female characters have been beaten with a bar of soap concealed in a sock by female inmates. A male character is seen assaulting women, i.e. slamming a woman's face against a brick wall, slapping and repeatedly beating a woman, kicking a woman, grabbing an elderly woman by the jaw, and being physically aggressive. A male character is scaled by hot water in the private area and repeatedly kicked by two female prisoners.
- Some bloody scenes. Stronger moments include a woman who miscarries and it is quite bloody. A female character has her tongue pierced with a nail, which becomes infected, and is very bloody. A female character often self-harms and blood is visible, and on one occasion it is very bloody. A male character is stabbed in the neck with an ice dagger and the blood squirts from his neck. A female character is hit of the head with a rock (off-screen) during a fight scene, and when her body is shown, the gash to her skull appears quite bloody.

- Strong drug use. Characters have been seen smoking marijuana, snorting cocaine, injecting heroin and using crack. Drug overdoses have been seen.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- Some intense moments. Characters have been bullied, stabbed, miscarried, self-harmed, such a wrist-cutting, suicide by hanging, attempted suicide by suffocation, and a female character chokes herself by blocking her airways with toilet paper, one bashes her head repeatedly against a brick wall, while another sets herself on fire. Two female characters escape from prison and violently torture a female prison officer and her husband in their home. Violent scenes, sexual assault, mental illness and child abuse. Both Christmas episodes have been dark and frightening.
