We look ahead to Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic City, what it might be like, and how it connects to his very earliest work.
In the press tour for his 2023 sci-fi film The Creator, British director Gareth Edwards suggested that, after the bruising experiences of making 2014’s Godzilla and in particular 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he wouldn’t rush to go back to studio filmmaking again.
Suggesting that both of those films had started production without finalised scripts, Edwards said as recently as January that “I have to concentrate on personal and original projects.”
This stance appeared to change rather abruptly just one month later, when Universal approached Edwards with the offer to direct the next Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) sequel. Original director David Leitch had dropped out, and with the film’s production racing to meet a self-set 2025 release date, Universal Pictures needed a replacement in a...

The 2019 launch of streaming platform Disney+ changed a lot for Marvel Studios, though those developments may not have been immediately obvious to fans. Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation Brad Winderbaum said in an interview with the “Phase Zero” podcast, “Frankly, in all honesty, there was a mandate to kind of create as much as we could for Disney+, as quickly as we could.”
“And then there was a shift,” Winderbaum continued. “And all of a sudden, we have to start spreading our release dates out. So, that really accounts for a lot of the delays. Now, we’re using that time. We’re not sitting idle.
“So, it’s like it stays in the oven. You can bake certain things a little more. It’s actually, I think, ultimately, it’s only going to make things better. But, most of it is just frankly shrapnel from the business.

The only thing that would make the deal even sweeter is if the classic crime thriller vibes of Nebula’s time in Xandar continued through the rest of the season.
Spoilers Ahead
Why Is Nebula In Xandar?
Nebula and loneliness have always been sort of synonymous. But the Nebula that the Watcher gets us acquainted with is now truly alone—lost in the vast cold of space in its literal sense. Ronan, the accuser, has taken her problematic family away from her. And, in the absence of her sister and her Infinity Stones-obsessed father, Nebula has a...

Marvel Studios has a robust lineup of over 20 projects in development, spotlighting both prominent and lesser-known characters from the comics. Recent rumors suggest that executives are exploring additional characters to expand the Disney+ show offerings.
Despite the industry-wide impact of the historic SAG-AFTRA strike, causing delays and uncertainties for some previously announced and speculated projects, occasional updates or rumors assure fans that progress is still underway. Over the past seven years, a Nova-centric project has been heavily rumored. The initial plan was for it to be a movie, but later speculations hinted at a Disney+ series. Now, according to the reliable insider Daniel Richtman, it appears the Nova project is destined to be a feature film after all.
Rumor: A project centered on 'Nova', which was originally going to be a limited series, is now being reworked as a feature film.

And even though the historic SAG-AFTRA strike affected productions across the board, and some previously announced and rumored projects are stuck in limbo, we occasionally get a piece of news or rumors confirming that they are still happening. In the last seven or so years, one project involving Nova was heavily rumored. It made sense to introduce him earlier due to the Guardians of the Galaxy connection to Xandar and the heavy involvement of Nova Corps with issues surrounding Ronan and Thanos.

The first Marvel / Disney+ series WandaVision is getting a collector’s edition Blu-ray release tomorrow (you can order a copy Here) – and apparently a featurette that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the spin-off / follow-up Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (which was formerly known as Agatha: House of Harkness and then Agatha: Coven of Chaos) is included in the extras! Agatha isn’t expected to start streaming on the Disney+ service until the early fall of 2024 – possibly on September 19, 2024 – so this featurette gets the marketing started quite early.

Piper Laurie, who blossomed as an actress only after extricating herself from the studio system and went on to rack up three Oscar nominations, has died. She was 91.
Laurie’s manager Marion Rosenberg confirmed the news to Variety, writing, “A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.”
Laurie scored her first Oscar nomination for her work opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s classic poolhall drama “The Hustler,” in which she played an alcoholic who memorably tells Newman’s character, “Look, I’ve got troubles and I think maybe you’ve got troubles. Maybe it’d be better if we just leave each other alone.”
Though she informally retired to raise a family for more than a decade, she returned to film and television in the mid-’70s and racked up an impressive roster of characterizations, including Oscar-nominated turns in “Carrie” and in “Children of a Lesser God,...

In James Gunn's 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy," the titular heroes visited the museum of the Collector (Benicio Del Toro), an alien being who took pride in amassing the galaxy's rarest trinkets. He kept his collection on display in a series of glass boxes, happy to show visitors around. When the Collector came into possession of an Infinity Stone, a powerful magical rock with explosive properties, it laid waste to most of his collection, but the ensuing explosion also freed an animal: Cosmo, the Soviet space dog. In the first "Guardians," Cosmo was merely a dog that licked the Collector's face. In subsequent sequels, Cosmo would be equipped with a collar that allowed her to speak (her voice was provided by Maria Bakalova) and would eventually discover she had psychokinetic powers.

The "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise has introduced plenty of colorful characters over the past decade, from a talking raccoon named Rocket, to a sentient tree named Groot, to the antennae-sporting alien, Mantis. Yet few new additions have been as instantaneously accepted as friend-shaped like Cosmo, the adorable space dog voiced by Maria Bakalova in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special." So far, we've only gotten a bit of screen time with Cosmo, but we know that she's telekinetic, loves Kevin Bacon, took a liking to Sean Gunn's Kraglin, and is, in the parlance of dog owners, "food motivated."
Cosmo also wears a pretty distinctive outfit: she's decked out in an old-fashioned spacesuit that's a bit like the kind astronauts wore during the Space Race. It features a patch that says Cccp and a rust red collar opening that could connect to a helmet — complete with what looks like a tiny sensor antenna.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe turns 15 this year and it recently kicked off a new chapter with "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," representing the first movie in Phase 5. We have a great idea of where much of this is headed, as the current phases will conclude with "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" and "Avengers: Secret Wars." Beyond that? It seems like we can and should expect fewer sequels in the solo franchises, according to recent comments from Disney CEO Bob Iger.
Iger recently spoke at Morgan Stanley's 2023 Technology Media and Telecom Conference and, per IndieWire, he addressed the future of the MCU. The executive at the top of Disney's food chain spoke with optimism about the future of the company's biggest franchise, though he did make it clear that some things are going to change. Here's what he said:
"Marvel — there were 7,000 characters, there are a lot more stories to tell.

"Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" scribe Jeff Loveness may have brought his experience in creating whacky science-fiction tales due to his time as a writer on "Rick and Morty," but his intimate knowledge of Marvel Comics stems directly from the superhero books he worked on. Loveness has written for both Marvel and DC, as well as for the independent publisher Boom! Studios, covering "Shazam!," "Spider-Man," and "Nova." The latter is near and dear to Loveness' heart, so it's no surprise that the writer has a few ideas about how the character can translate to the screen.

In the span of just two years, Marvel Studios released seven movies, eight TV series, and two specials comprising Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s certainly a lot of projects released in a short time, but they might pump the brakes a bit moving forward. According to a report by THR, Marvels Studios may push back the release of several projects to 2024, including the upcoming Disney+ series, Echo, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Ironheart, and more.
Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige laid out plans at last year’s Comic-Con to release five new shows on Disney+ in 2023, including Secret Invasion, Loki season 2, Ironheart, Echo, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and What If…? season 2. THR’s report states that only Secret Invasion and the second season of Loki are “sure bets to debut this year,” with the remaining projects “unlikely” to arrive in 2023. As Echo and Ironheart wrapped shooting last year,...

Call it a franchise recession.
After years of Marvel and Star Wars movies and shows inundating screens big and small, Disney is putting the brakes on the output of some of its biggest franchises and brands following Bob Iger’s Feb. 8 comments that the company needs to be “better at curating” franchise content that’s “extraordinarily expensive.” Added Iger: “We want the quality on the screen, but we have to look at what they cost us.”
The directive to rein in costs and output arrives as Disney prepares to release Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania on Feb. 17 and as The Mandalorian season three awaits its March 1 Disney+ debut. Marvel is Disney’s most important supplier of product, the subsidiary with the highest output — and under Iger’s directive, it could feel cuts the soonest. “There is going to be a level of rigor on Marvel and across the entire company,...

Columbia University revealed its winners for the 2023 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Awards Monday night. The annual awards honor the best in broadcast journalism, documentary and digital reporting.
CBS Evening News Anchor and Managing Editor Norah O’Donnell and Co-Anchor of PBS NewsHour Amna Nawaz hosted the ceremony in person in New York City at the Low Memorial Library for the first time in three years.
“Tonight’s honorees are recognized for the quality of their work … this truly phenomenal journalism,” O’Donnell said in her opening remarks. “But we also want to recognize the courage it took to embark on reporting these difficult stories and the doggedness to complete them. As any journalist knows, this type of journalism is met with resistance — but you never gave up!”
She continued, “Know this: The work that you do is more important than ever. In the era of the 24-hour news cycle, the painstaking reporting and storytelling — is vital.
