Paramount+'s highly-anticipated "Zoey 101" spinoff film, "Zoey 102," hit the streamer on July 27, and it features most of the original show's cast, including Jamie Lynn Spears. The new movie's plot sees Zoey confront the state of her life (and love) as an adult when she reunites with her Pacific Coast Academy crew at her friends Quinn and Logan's over-the-top wedding.
However, three of the show's main characters are noticeably missing from the reunion festivities. Victoria Justice, who played Zoey's friend Lola; Alexa Nikolas, who played Nicole Bristow for the first two seasons; and Paul Butcher, who portrayed Zoey's little brother, Dustin Brooks. The three original series staples will not be seen in the film for their own reasons.
Find out everything we know about why Victoria Justice, Alexa Nikolas, and Paul Butcher aren't in "Zoey 102."

The long-gestating movie follow-up to the mid-aughts Nickelodeon show gets mired in a familiar ongoing adolescence
If I were a television executive, particularly one at a large streaming platform that contains a teen network, I would certainly consider a reboot of Zoey 101. The tween series, which ran from 2005 to 2008 and starred Jamie Lynn Spears as a boarding school student in Malibu, is remembered fondly by a certain slice of Nickelodeon-raised late millennials. Its ending felt premature and tinged with sadness, as the series finale aired a few months after Spears, the younger sister of Britney, revealed that she was pregnant at 16. Though the show had already wrapped production before Jamie Lynn became a too-young tabloid fixture, the popular impression was that her off-screen shock pregnancy torpedoed the cutesy, very PG series.
In other words, there’s an on-paper case for Zoey 102, the new Paramount+ movie reboot of the series,...

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Cruella” is her 11th and could result in her third win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016). She would be the 11th costumer to achieve as many victories and already ranks as the eighth most-nominated one. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011). The first five films for which she was nominated were all directed by James Ivory.

InterviewTo prepare for his role in Jai Bhim, Manikandan stayed with the Irulas for two months to understand their lives and lifestyles better.Subha J RaoIn the recent Jai Bhim, which has triggered a fierce debate on custodial brutality and what the courts can do to offer justice, there’s a scene where Rasakannu (Manikandan), a marginalised person who knows his place in society, tells the rich man he cannot take money for removing the snake from his house, because he was merely helping him. “Plus, your wife is from my village,” he smiles. The wife flings a casteist retort at him. Rasakannu’s smiling face crumples like a balloon pricked. If Jai Bhim hit as hard as it did, the way Manikandan humanised Rasakannu had a big role to play. He showed us what a lovely, loving man Rasakannu was, and why he did not deserve to be treated the way he was.

Full of campy theatrics and dramatic sartorial looks, Cruella gives the titular villainess an origin story with Emma Stone in the lead. The One Hundred and One Dalmatians franchise has long been a beloved family classic, but is this enough to warrant a sequel to this latest prequel project? 100 percent.
Almost two weeks after hitting theaters in May 2021, Disney confirmed the movie will have a follow-up. "We are very pleased with Cruella's box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date," a Disney spokesperson told People. "The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A's in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film."

Glenn Close has a long association with Disney’s 101 Dalmatians live-action franchise. For those who’ve forgotten (or never knew), Close played the arch-villain Cruella de Vil in 1996’s 101 Dalmatians and its 2001 sequel, 102 Dalmatians. And although she’s ceded the role to Emma Stone in the prequel Cruella, she did sign on as an […]

Before we say goodbye to 2000 and move forward to the next Smackdown year, 1946, I'd like to take a look at the Best Costume Design Oscar race. Take it as a digestif to our coverage. In any case, this specific lineup offers a remarkably comprehensive overview of some of the category's favorite elements and most glaring blind spots. As always, period work dominates, though there's also space for fantasy and contemporary narratives, intersections of fashion and costume, as well as a non-English-language movie. The nominees were…
Anthony Powell, 102 Dalmatians Rita Ryack, How the Grinch Stole Christmas Jacqueline West, Quills Janty Yates, Gladiator ★ Tim Yip, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
First up, let's look at the period films and, more specifically, our victor.

Cruella De Vil first appeared in the animated classic 101 Dalmations, in which the villain grew obsessed with capturing dalmatians for their hides. Glenn Close played the role in the live-action remake in 1996, and reprised Cruella for the 2000 sequel, 102 Dalmatians.
Cruella is set for a May 28 theatrical release.

On the surface, Pete Davidson and Glenn Close might not seem like they have a lot in common.
But the 73-year-old acting legend and 27-year-old “Saturday Night Live” star hit it off so quickly during a conversation for Variety’s Actors on Actors movies issue, it felt like they were made for each other. They’d crammed in advance — Close said she woke up nervous that morning “because you just seem so cool” — having seen each other’s movies.
The entire interview turned out to be one of the best in Variety’s series. Davidson sat through two viewings of Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy” on Netflix, where Close plays Mamaw, the bespectacled matriarch of the Vance family, who deals with drug addiction and abuse. “I thought it was spot-on just from people that I know,” Davidson says.
Close complimented Davidson back, by telling him that he was “incredible” in “The King of Staten Island,...

Disney bucked box office tradition this year, opting for the first time since 2014 not to release a movie the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
But that doesn’t mean the studio won’t still gobble up the competition around Turkey Day. Disney unveiled “Frozen 2,” which debuted to a stellar $130 million in North America, a week earlier than the traditional holiday release. It’s a strategic move that Lionsgate and Warner Bros. previously deployed with “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” two of the highest-grossing Thanksgiving releases ever.
Like those offerings, “Frozen 2” should power an impressive sophomore outing during a time when young kids are out of school and parents are off from work.
“Hunger Games: Catching Fire” still holds the record for the biggest Thanksgiving haul for its second weekend in theaters, when it generated $109 million between Wednesday and Sunday in 2013. But since then, Disney has slowly...

Over the last decade, Disney has found itself dipping increasingly into its own well of nostalgic favorites. Specifically, they’ve been taking their beloved animated classics, remaking them in live-action (or mostly live-action), and producing one blockbuster smash after another.
Not all of these live-action Disney remakes are good, and some of the bad ones have unexpectedly interesting ideas. And some of them actually predate the current (and seemingly never-ending) wave. Let’s take a look at all of the live-action remakes of Disney’s animated classics, going all the way back to the 1990s, to explore which films improved on the original and which ones came up short.
15. “The Jungle Book” (1994)
The first live-action Disney remake of an animated Disney classic is, somehow, still the worst. Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy”) directs this frustratingly inert take on Rudyard Kipling’s stories, which strips the animals of their characterizations and highlights...

No shocker here as Disney has moved Fox’s Joe Wright movie The Woman in the Window out of Oct. 4 to May 15, 2020. This was to be expected as the film has to undergo reshoots. Already, Disney has Fox Searchlight’s Lucy in the Sky on Oct. 4.
Meanwhile, Cruella, a live-action spinoff of the classic Disney animated toon 101 Dalmatians about baddie Cruella de Vil, starring Emma Stone moves from Dec. 23, 2020 to Memorial Day weekend, May 28, 2021. Other changes include Fox’s Empty Man opening on Aug. 7, 2020.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie – the feature film adaptation of the musical about a teenager from Sheffield, England who wants to be a drag queen, directed by Jonathan Butterell – is now dated for Oct.

When Disney isn’t busy pumping out “Star Wars” spin-offs or Marvel superhero sequels and origin stories, the studio seems bound and determined to recycle every one of its animated classics into a live-action or heavily CGI version. Back in 1994, the House of Mouse did its first live-action redo based on 1967’s “The Jungle Book.” Directed by Stephen Sommers, it took in an Ok $42 million at the box office. It was a step in a new direction from the old days when the studio would do anniversary revivals of their treasured animated features by re-releasing them on the big screen.
That tradition ended when they got more bang out of their remake buck with 1996’s live-action “101 Dalmatians,” based on the 1961 cartoon feature. The big draw was Glenn Close as the malevolent puppy-snatcher Cruella de Vil. The doggy romance hit the spot, grossing $320.7 million worldwide — although its sequel, “102 Dalmatians,...

Craig Gillespie has been tapped up to direct a film about the 101 Dalmatians villain, starring Emma Stone.
Disney's focus on live-action updates of its animated classics continues apace, with the news that I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie is in talks with the studio to take over the reins on Cruella.
The film will focus on the villain of 1961's 101 Dalmatians, Cruella de Vil, presumably in much the same way as the Sleeping Beauty-inspired Maleficent. Oscar-winner Emma Stone is set to take on the leading role as the fur-loving fashion queen who strikes fear into the heart of doggies everywhere.
This version is being pitched as an 80s-set origin story with punk-rock stylings, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Risky? Sure. But since Glenn Close has already played de Vil in 1996's live-action 101 Dalmatians and its sequel (the imaginatively titled 102 Dalmatians), a radical new take...

Director Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct “Cruella” at Disney, the live-action Cruella de Vil movie starring Emma Stone, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Gillespie is making his follow-up to 2017’s Oscar-winning “I, Tonya.” He previously directed the films “Million Dollar Arm” and “The Finest Hours” for Disney.
Alex Timbers, known for his work on Broadway and Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle,” was previously attached to direct the film. Timbers however will next bring musical adaptations of “Moulin Rouge!” and “Beetlejuice” to Broadway.

Stone will star in what’s pegged as something of a prequel to “101 Dalmatians” as a young Cruella before she schemed to skin the black-and-white spotted puppies for her fur coat.
Jez Butterworth wrote the most recent version of the script, with a previous draft from Kelly Marcel.

Cruella will see Oscar winner Emma Stone play the dalmatian-coat-coveting Disney villainess, Cruella de Vil.
Disney continues to power through a drive to produce live-action versions of the myriad classic animated features it's amassed over the better part of the last century. Recent examples include 2014’s Malificent, 2015’s Cinderella, 2016’s The Jungle Book and 2017's Beauty and the Beast, as well as imminent offerings in Aladdin and The Lion King, amongst others. However, one such offering, Cruella, is a prequel of sorts to the traditional story of 101 Dalmatians, which will see Emma Stone playing the ruthlessly avaricious Cruella de Vil.
Cruella will be directed by Craig Gillespie, who recently led star Margot Robbie to Oscar-nominated glory in the biopic, I, Tonya. He works off a screenplay recently rewritten by Jez Butterworth (Spectre).
In the latest Cruella news, Disney has finally dropped a release date.
