My Dress-Up Darling made waves when it launched back in the Winter 2022 anime season as a refreshing romance anime series unlike any other. My Dress-Up Darling was an innocent seinen anime that combined high school hijinks, teen love, the power of cosplay, and comedy to create something wonderful that any comedy or romance fan can enjoy. There isn't yet news on a potential My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 for now, but in the meantime, new fans are always welcome to dive in and meet this anime's delightful main cast.
Season 1 of My Dress-Up Darling only introduced a small handful of characters, but each of them is a pleasure to meet and is well-written, meaning My Dress-Up Darling is quality over quantity with its cast. Each character has either a role to play in cosplay or a loving bond with a major cast member, giving this anime an intimate, cozy feeling where...

Conversations about the future of artificial intelligence can be found all over SXSW this year — and not all of the festival’s attendees are thrilled with the idea. Specifically, the film and TV fans catching screenings of world premieres including “The Fall Guy” and “Immaculate” made their AI displeasure loud and clear on Tuesday at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. (Scroll down to see for yourself.)
The quick-turnaround video editors at SXSW cut a daily sizzle reel highlighting previous panels, premieres and other events, which then runs before festival screenings. On Tuesday, the fourth edition of that daily video focused on the wide variety of keynotes and panelists in town to discuss AI. Those folks sure seem bullish on artificial intelligence, and the audiences at the Paramount — many of whom are likely writers and actors who just spent much of 2023 on the picket line trying to reign in the potentially...

An AI video imagines what The Office would look like if directed by Wes Anderson, adopting his visual style. The video also recasts most of the main characters with Anderson's frequent collaborators, including Adrian Brody, Jeff Goldblum, and Jason Schwartzman, but Steve Carell retain the role of Michael Scott. While Anderson movies have a different style of humor from The Office, the filmmaker's unique sensibilities would make for an interesting take on the workplace comedy.
The Office becomes a quirky Wes Anderson adventure in a stylish AI video. First airing in 2005 on NBC, the American version of The Office would go on to become one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. In the mid-90s, GameShark established itself as the name in video game cheats by releasing a series of devices that would allow you to access a collection of pre-programmed cheat codes for various popular titles. While those peripherals didn’t always work as intended, they were a revelation for cheat code enthusiasts everywhere. No more hunting down cheat code books, subscribing to magazines, or relying on the scoops of so-called friends. They were literal game-changers.
Over time, though, the GameShark brand became a shell of its former self. Diminishing product quality and changes in the industry turned the formerly essential accessories into relics of a misspent youth. Now, though, a company is trying to revive the GameShark brand for the modern era. Before you get too excited, though, you should know that they’re going about it in the strangest way possible.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Many of the most memorable moments of my life have revolved around cinema. (Let’s not debate whether that is a good thing.) And 2023 was no exception. There was a twentieth-anniversary screening of the mesmerizing Mulholland Drive at Buffalo’s North Park Theatre featuring a performance from the remarkable Rebekah Del Rio. That was a biggie, but many of my most indelible 2023 cinema memories include my children. In July, my wife and our two kiddos had a rare group cinema outing to Barbie on its opening day, and I have rarely seen my then-eight-year-old daughter more genuinely excited to dance the night away. The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

The Creator aligns itself with AI characters, standing out from other films that often raise questions about the rights and humanity of AI with trepidation. Films like Terminator 2 and Ex Machina explore the limitations of AI's ability to understand and experience human emotions, emphasizing the importance of human connections separate from AI. The Creator takes a different path from films like Blade Runner and A.I. Artificial Intelligence by portraying those who oppose AI as waging a destructive, imperialistic war, leaving little room for moral ambiguity.

At every turn, Garth Davis’s Foe not only fails to adequately redress or rework played-out tropes within its high-concept world, but its examination of marriage and identity is also hackneyed. Written by Davis and Iain Reid, this sci-fi chamber piece feels Frankensteined together, each limb a reminder of more heartbreaking, wondrous, or sophisticated works that reconciling with the end of the world and the fragility of human relationships.
In the dystopia of Foe, new “self-determinative” lifeforms are conceived to take on dirty work in a ravaged land. They’re first introduced to us as an idea via the opening title card, which informs us that Earth’s natural and fertile resources, like water and soil, will become rare and valuable commodities later this century. As big of a threat as artificial intelligence is to TV and film, there’s one place where nearly everyone can agree it may be beneficial: sorting through a streamer’s seemingly endless library. That’s exactly the strategy Tubi has launched with Rabbit AI, the ad-supported streamer’s collaboration with ChatGPT.
It also marks the first time a streamer has officially partnered with AI to enhance its search.
Currently, Tubi uses traditional search and discovery tools to catalog its content. Users basically enter in a keyword and, as long as a title is indexed correctly, a corresponding title appears from that search. The streamer also uses machine learning to create containers of genres and subgenres that may be of interest to users.

Tubi, Fox Corp.’s ad-supported video-streaming service, has turned to OpenAI’s ChatGPT artificial-intelligence agent to suggest new TV shows and movies to watch — although the feature is really just a form of natural-language search.
Tubi’s Rabbit AI is powered by ChatGPT-4. The AI feature, which shows up on the bottom of Tubi’s mobile app, lets users “ask questions the same way you’d ask a friend.” For example, if you type, “Any movies that are funny about sharks?” into Rabbit AI, it will return a list of titles including “Shark Bait,” “Sharknado,” “Sharkula” and “Bigfoot vs Megalodon.” (See demo video below.) Users can then save the results onto their My List watchlist. In addition, search history is saved for future reference.

He's one of the greatest, most successful filmmakers in the history of the moving image, but there were times throughout his career when even Steven Spielberg needed a hit. Badly.
One such crucial juncture arrived in 1980. After the unprecedented blockbuster combo of "Jaws" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Spielberg face-planted with the critically reviled World War II comedy "1941." Turns out a lot of folks thought making hay out of the Pacific Coast's gun-toting freakout in the immediate wake of Pearl Harbor was in poor taste. In any event, though the film was a moderate box office hit, it was perceived as a full-scale fiasco for the Hollywood wunderkind. Had success spoiled Steven Spielberg?

We already know Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is one of the sticking points in both the SAG and WGA strikes. And we’ve already seen instances where fans have used fairly rudimentary technology to create some truly fascinating (and scary) content with this A.I. tech that is commonly found online. This has quickly raised a number of questions in the film/TV industry, with filmmakers and actors wondering just how far people can take this tech.

Drew Barrymore starred in "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" when she was only six years old. Nearly 40 years later, her director, Steven Spielberg, appeared on "The Drew Barrymore Show" for a birthday celebration and they reminisced about filming the seminal alien classic. Spielberg recalled that Barrymore "came up with a lot of lines in the movie" as a little girl, including the memorable scene when Gertie first sees the titular E.T. In the movie, she takes one quizzical look at the alien and says, "I don't like his feet."
"She said that during rehearsal, and I said, 'Drew, can you remember to say that when the cameras are rolling?'" he remembered.
The feet observation was Barrymore's genuine response to the E.T. animatronic designed by the renowned special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi. It's not hard to see why she reacted this way. E.T. is the definition of ugly cute with his wrinkled,...

The Creator director Gareth Edwards explained why he decided to take a five-year break from directing after doing 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
In an interview with SFX Magazine, Edwards addressed his decision to take the time-off from filmmaking despite the critical and commercial success of his Star Wars prequel. He revealed that he simply didn’t want to get stuck in Hollywood’s money-making machine by continuing to churn out big-budget projects. "I needed to get off the merry-go-round, do you know what I mean?" Edwards said. "In Hollywood, you can get stuck on the hamster wheel, or whatever analogy you want to use. I just wanted to get off and have a break to take some time thinking about the next thing."

Some great films, like Tenet and AI: Artificial Intelligence, were initially misunderstood due to high expectations or confusing plots, but they have since been appreciated for their unique qualities and technical achievements. Inherent Vice and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou were initially divisive but have gained a cult following over time, showcasing their respective director's ability to explore different genres and push boundaries. Speed Racer and Miami Vice were ahead of their time, criticized for their style but now recognized as influential and visually stunning films that have influenced modern blockbusters. Mank and Stoker were also misjudged upon release but are now seen as thought-provoking and artistic works. Ishtar, despite its failure, is a highly underrated comedy from the '80s that deserves more recognition. To the Wonder, although different from Terrence Malick's previous works, is an incredible piece of cinema that has improved with age.

Robin Williams is one of his generation's most potent, acclaimed, and memorable actors. With so many iconic films under his belt, his saddest movie remains a prime example of how important it is to ensure a movie's marketing matches its story.
Robin Williams may be known by many as a comedy actor and stand-up comedian, but his best roles were always more heartfelt, dramatic performances. Notably, his best performance can be found in Good Will Hunting, where he plays a widower therapist struggling to help a young man channel his talents and work through his own grief. The duality of his career, balancing serious drama with laugh-out-loud comedy, made for one of cinema's most versatile, talented actors. Many who never liked the actor as a stand-up comedian acknowledge how emotive and skilled he was on the big screen. Steven Spielberg is retooling Stanley Kubrick's unproduced Napoleon movie into a limited series for HBO, marking the second time Spielberg has brought an unmade Kubrick project to fruition. Spielberg previously finished Kubrick's A.I. Artificial Intelligence film after Kubrick's death, which was a great success at the box office and even garnered Academy Award nominations. Spielberg's previous success with A.I. suggests that his adaptation of Kubrick's Napoleon has the potential to be just as great, given Spielberg's talent and Kubrick's extensive research on the project.

Director Gareth Edwards said The Creator reflects the current zeitgeist on emerging artificial intelligence, but he asserts that the timing of the film’s release was coincidental.
The trailer for The Creator just dropped in the heat of concerns about the impact and potential threat of AI, but Edwards was quick to dismiss speculation that the timing of the movie's release was intentional. Speaking to Total Film magazine, Edwards said the film was more of a social comment on how society treats outsiders than anything else. The plot will develop the theme against the familiar backdrop of man against machines.

And though artificial intelligence has been a topic of sci-fi films for years, it feels like there is no better time than now to release a film about rogue A.I. taking over the world and enslaving humanity. So, you have to imagine filmmaker Gareth Edwards is pretty damn excited to be releasing “The Creator” this year.

Asteroid City (Wes Anderson)
Wes Anderson has done it all: India by train, Rhode Island by foot, the Mediterranean by sub, France by bike, faux-Germany by hotel, apple-orchard America by fox, animated Japan by dog, motel Texas by friends, New York City by family. But––despite the feeling that this couldn’t possibly be true––he’s never told a story in western America. In setting he hasn’t gone further west than Houston. Until Asteroid City: Arizona desert by quarantine. – Luke H. (full review)
Where to Stream: VOD
Chile ’76 (Manuela Martelli)
Manuela Martelli’s debut film opens with a sequence that perfectly captures the tone and themes Chile ‘76 will explore. Carmen (played by Aline Kuppenheim) is at a paint shop,...

The red thread of fate, also known as the red string of fate, is a popular motif in East Asian cultures that represents two people's destined connection. Soulmates tied by the red thread will find each other regardless of time, place, and circumstances, as they are bound to be together by metaphysical powers beyond human comprehension.
This alluring romantic trope originates from Chinese mythology, in which the red thread is tied around two partners' ankles to lead them to the one they're destined to marry. In anime and other Japanese media, the trope morphed to tie around the lovers' fingers, yet its tenderhearted implications remained the same. A dreamy representation of "one true love" waiting for a character on the other end of the string can be found in countless series, and it always has a profound effect on fans of romance.
