Zhanna Vitenson, a student at Moscow State University, was fascinated by the North, where she often traveled to folklore expeditions. The script, written by her on the basis of northern fairy tales, was approved by Mstislav Pashchenko and, at his recommendation, was put into production at Soyuzmultfilm studio.
The film used the innovative artistic technique proposed by V. A. Nikitin - the use of luminescent paints.
