Fun and games with Pooh

The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh has always been one of my favourite Disney shows, and I say this as a long-time Winnie the Pooh fan. While I do think there are better titles in the video collection such as Detective Tigger, Sharing & Caring, Helping Others, Cowboy Pooh and my favourite Making Friends, Fun 'n' Games is a more than worthy addition to the video tape collection.

As I may have said a number of times, what I love about The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh are not just the simple, innocent and fun stories and characters that stay in your mind for goodness knows how long, but also for the elegant animation, beautiful music, top notch voice acting(who doesn't love Paul Winchell?) and especially the funny writing. Every single one of the episodes here have these and more

"What's The Score Pooh?" starts off the video and is very affectionate and amusing. Pooh is adorable, Tigger as always is a riot and while Eeyore is cynical and pessimistic you can't help loving him and feeling sorry for him. And I loved it that Gopher, a character either underused or omitted in later incarnations, has a fair bit to do throughout the show and he is fun with his goofy sayings and how he says them in this episode. Everything that I love about the show is still there, and of the dialogue I loved "We must have a team meeting./But haven't we met each other already?/Oh my" most.

"Prize Piglet", for me one of the cutest episodes of the entire show, is a joy for Piglet fans. He may be timid, but he is also very loving and sweet and "Prize Piglet" show these traits perfectly. I love how whimsical and innocent the story is too. Of the voice acting, I always have raved about Winchell, but it is John Fiedler's episode here. He always is wonderful, but here the cuteness and vulnerability of Piglet really comes through. "Prize Piglet" is no exception to having great writing, it ranges from touching to hilarious and is always endearing, my favourites being "I can't stop now little piglet, I got to catch up with you", Owl's commentary when everyone starts the race and the exchange "Owl!/Yes?/ We have only one thing to say./Yes?/ HELP!"

"Pooh's Poohetry" is my favourite of the three, and to me it is certainly the funniest. I love the poetry(or poohetry), and while Tigger's poetry is terrible you love him for it. The story is charming, and the writing from the humour to the wordplay is really inspired, a good example being "I love to smell the pretty flowers, when I take a morning stroll. But I'm so busy sniffing, I fall into a hole (YAAAAAAAA...)". Tigger and Piglet are the characters that really make the episode work, and the voice work for both characters is terrific.

All in all, like with all the videos in the Winnie the Pooh collection, I recommend Fun 'n' Games highly. 10/10 Bethany Cox
