A Busy Day in This 1895 Neighborhood
PCC092112 September 2023
Lyon, place Bellecour (1895), is another Lumière film, produced in 1895, that probably wasn't released to paying audiences, until early 1896. It probably kept the 1895 tag, because it was shown to a test audience that year. Lyon, place Bellecour (1895), is pretty incredible. All the excitement of the town center of Lyon, France in 1895. Everyone buzzing around, with their busy lives and getting through their day. Everything here still looks like it is horse-drawn. There are no cars yet, but they do have horse-drawn, double decker buses. It's a busy day in the neighborhood for sure. Lyon, place Bellecour (1895), could be a good complimentary film, to watch with the Lumiere's Cordeliers' Square in Lyon (1895). The two together show an excellent view of life in France in 1895.

9.3 (A MyGrade) = 9 IMDB.

Typical Lumiere

Warning: Spoilers
There is plenty here to watch in this brief Lumiere actuality. As the title tells us, the short takes place in Bellecour, Lyon, (despite what the previous reviewer said, NOT on the exact same street of "Cordelier's Square in Lyon" nor at the same time) and as you can imagine we pretty much are left watching what's going on on the street for about a minute. The film is certainly one of the less known Lumiere actualities but having said it again gives us an equally important look into this bygone era. The view itself is particularly good, the camera set up in a higher position so we can see the full street.

Lyon, place Bellecour (1895)

I'm going to guess that the Lumiere Brothers shot this film at the same time as PLACE DES CORDELIERS A LYON, which was released the same year and appears to have been shot on the same street. I say this because both films just capture what was happening on a snowy road. The other film had the camera directly on the street but this one here has it higher up so you get a longer view of the street and everything that is going on. Again, there's certainly nothing ground-breaking about this movie or others like it but it's fascinating getting to see a moment in time. The cinematography is actually excellent and the camera position gives us a great view.
