Could have been a lot better

Warning: Spoilers
There's much to commend in this broad overview of the western genre. The documentary features generous selections from some fairly obscure films, and also spends a goodly portion of its running time telling the stories of forgotten and nearly forgotten western stars--as well as more well known thespians such as Gary Cooper and John Wayne. This catholic approach to the genre is, however, a double edged sword: the film is too broad and tries to accomplish far too much in its 95 minute running time. Other problems include the completely bloodless narration of Dave Mann, which could lull an insomniac to sleep, and the bizarre decision to tint certain film segments an odd burnt orange. Overall, this is recommended viewing for hardcore oater enthusiasts, but falls well short of greatness.
