A great fun movie. The story line is not exactly original, but the direction, editing and choreography more than make up for it. Newcomers Hritik and Ameesha look great. The movie is fast paced and sustains interest throughout. And Hritik really is the biggest draw. He is hunky, dances well and can act too. Just the right stuff for a Hollywood star.

The new year 2000 is almost over and looking back at the year on the Hindi film industry - it hasn't been hot at all. Only 1 Superhit so far, way back in January! The year will be remembered of course for the debut of an actor named Hrithik Roshan who was a nationwide phenomenon in India. And in a nation of 1 billion people - that is a HUGE phenomenon.
It was a case of a great looking guy who entertained people - good promotional advertising on the producers part and partly due to the dismal performance of the Khans' films that Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai did that well. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is leagues better and it would be criminal to compare this film to DDLJ (ah...the shudder of perfection). It's not that good.
The plot is simple and nothing we haven't seen before folks.
On vacation in New Zealand, an emotionally upset Sonia laments over the loss of her boyfriend Rohit; rich girl, poor boy scenario. But there is something familiar about the yuppie rich kid Raj, whom she meets at a dance club - an excellent scene made only more powerful by Lucky Ali's music track. A fast pace and 2 plot twists keep the movie highly entertaining and above average fare. The film is a bit of a thriller but mainly an entertainer, and I'm happy it does it's job here. Love stories don't always need a moral - we just want to have a good time. ( No, I won't call 'Believe in Love' a moral)
Director Rakesh Roshan manages to showcase all of his son's talents in this film: body build, dancing moves, a range of emotions and a knack for acting - something most actors in the industry today, lack.
Amisha Patel isn't given a lot to do here and thankfully does it well. She is very easy on the eyes - but of course! This is of course Hrithik's movie - the one that shot him into the the pre-adolescent hearts of every girl in the country, and their mothers too! He's under the spotlight 24/7 and a role model to many adolescent boys.
Hrithik's made a great first impression, but in an industry as whimsical as ours where you're only as good as your next movie he needs to diversify his roles (if that's possible in our industry) and keep the hits coming. I've got my fingers crossed for this guy - please don't be a one hit wonder.

Well-improvised love story, with an ideal release date

Among recent hindi movies, KNPH (Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai) is just the perfect date movie for Valentine's day. And since this was the time around which it was released, it became a box-office blockbuster in no time.
This is no artistic movie. And its stars are not exactly skilled veterans who will challenge the likes of Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks for the 'best actor' oscar. But, this film certainly knows what it wants to give to the audience - 3 hours of entertainment, in its purest form. Its ingredients are nothing out of the ordinary - a proper love story, an antagonist, picture-perfect filming locations and a reasonably good potrayal of the ultimate triumph of true love. But, unlike other run-of-the-mill bollywood romances, the story in this one has a very nice pace and flow to it. Never once did I feel bored, or think about anything else during the movie. The film just doesn't let you too.
On the whole, a nice movie for the whole family, and especially for couples.

I never went through the ardent teeny bopper fan phase even in my teens. But amusingly enough, this is probably the closest I have been to that "ardent fan" title, having seen the movie more than an acceptable number of times, and being a Pakistani- I think we should forget the arms race- India has already conquered us with Hrithik!!!:)
Hrithik is an absolute pleasure to watch. Besides his great looks and The Bod, he is completely comfortable and un-selfconscious on screen, moves like a gazelle, could probably dance rings around Ricky Martin and HEY- he is a good actor too! He has a double role and plays both convincingly. He completely changes his persona from shy and unassuming to a charmer who can walk the walk and talk the talk. I loved the second half of the movie even more. He acts with his whole body. Notice when Raj asks his father for advice about his unrequited love for Sonia, how he uses his shoulders and hands to convey a feeling of frustration and helplessness without the typical histrionics. My only criticism is the lack of chemistry between the two lead actors. Hrithik never really conveys that attraction and passion for his leading lady. Even when singing about HER; the song "Kyun Chalti Hai Hawa" is more about HIM SINGING about her, than about her- if you know what I mean- he doesnt really get into her (eg: Shahrukh and Kajol in "Kuchch Kuchch Hota Hai"; Salman and Aishwarya in "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam") except in one scene when she is tying a bandage on his arm and he is looking at her: Brilliant!
The songs are infinitely hum-able. Ameesha, although occasionally stiff while dancing, and hams a couple of times- but few enough for her first film; has done a great job overall. Specially her hysterical scenes are brilliantly done.
Very entertaining movie. The action scenes are well shot, the cinematography is great (specially with the ship) the dialogues are contemporary, witty and well-written. Rakesh Roshan has taken a typical Bollywood movie and made it with a kind of sincerety that seems like respect for the audience, not just a successful launch for his son.

Rohit(hrithik) dreams to become a famous singer and works as a car salesman for living. He falls in love with sonia(amisha patel). Rohit delivers a car for her birthday. Then he also attracts his boss's son atul by singing in sonia's birthday party. Impressed with rohit, atul signs him to sing in a cruise where sonia also comes. Rohit and sonia get separated from the ship and land in a deserted island. Both of them confess their love towards each other. When sonia's father saxena(anupam kher) finds them, he tries to separate them but realises rohit's sincerity and gives him a chance to become independent. When rohit gets a chance to perform a live musical show, he gets murdered by inspector kadam and shinde as he was a witness of the commissioner's murder. Rohit's body gets missing and Sonia is left depressed. Saxena sends her to new zealand with his brother. There she meets rohits lookalike raj. Raj is a rich NRI and has never come to India. He falls in love with sonia but sonia gets more disturbed seeing raj. When raj knows about Rohit, he is first hurt but then goes to India for sonia. There he gets attacked by kadam and then both sonia and raj realise there is some foul play regarding rohit's death. Rest of the movie is how raj and sonia find rohit's killer.
In his debut, hrithik owes the film. Its his show all over. He brilliantly portrayed different characters of raj and rohit brilliantly. As rohit, he is handsome and charming on the other hand is classy and stylish as raj. Another highlight is rajesh roshan's chartbuster music. The songs along with hrithik's dance were a treat to watch. Amisha gets completely overshadowed. Story has nothing new to offer, script is average and climax is typical hero saving kidnapped heroine.
On the while knph is most remembered for hrithik roshan's performance and songs.

His path crosses that of Sonia, a rich and pampered girl and before we know it, love has blossomed. However, Sonia's father will not accept Rohit and Rohit promises to make it big and then return for Sonia. However, there is a sub-plot to the film, and it is when Rohit witnesses the murder of a policeman that the film begins takes a different turn. To reveal any more would be giving the story away.

This is one of the most adorable movies ever made. The story may not be extremely original and some of the songs may not be great but the overall effect is sure to leave you smiling. Don't expect a deep art film or edge of the seat thriller this is a feel good movie with romance comedy and a little action. and even if you don't like the movie you will have to love the guy. This dude is gonna conqueor bollywood. Watch this great movie free of vulgarity and violence often filling the screen.and u will love kaho naa... pyaar hai

I wonder, why this movie won as the best film of 2000 ? Mohabbatein is far better than this !
This movie is so typical of Hindi movies, when romance and bad action is mixed together. At the first, this movie is went well, where the romance is heart throbbing. But it's suddenly change into a thriller ! If this movie consist on it's romantic line, I think this movie gonna be the one of my favorite movie. :-(
Hindi movies have a lot improvement lately, but when KHPH appear, it look to me that Bollywood is return to it's cliche cinema again. Actually, the cast is well, especially Hrithik Roshan. He definitely not just have a good look, but he prove that he can act too........
Anyway, I hope there's nothing more movie like this in Bollywood cinema history.

You don't need to understand Hindi to enjoy this movie

If you know how to suspend disbelief, you will enjoy this movie. It was my first Hindi movie and I saw it in India. It was GREAT!! I don't normally enjoy musicals, but this was an exception. The singing & dancing were terrific. The title song is a big hit in India. The movie didn't look much like the India I saw, but the cinematography was excellent, and the sound was Dolby Digital (Indians like their movies loud). I could follow the storyline even though I understand no Hindi. It helped that there was a smattering of english throughout the movie. I can't wait to see it again with subtitles. Apparently most Indian movies have the same plot, singing, and dancing, so if you have seen a lot of these movies, it may not excite you like it did me, but I thought it was a well made (slick comes to mind), well acted, and a well produced piece of "Bollywood". The producer introduced his son with this picture, and he has become the heartthrob of India. I'm not good at analyzing movies so I'll finish by just saying, I came out of the theater with a smile on my face, and a tune in my head. This movie was FUN!

Rakesh Roshan gave several superhits as a director, Khudgarz,Khoon Bhari Maang Kishen Kanhaiyaa, Karan Arjun.etc however in late 90s his films were not working, Koyla was a flop Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai marked debut of his son Hrithik Roshan who appeared as a child artist in Bhagwan Dada in 1986. The film also marked debut of Amisha Patel. Anywayz rest all to rest. The film created a huge hype as the songs were famous before release and Hrithik's good looks. The film starts off as a normal love story which is interwoven with a crime angle and the interval ends at a sad note which is so far good, The second half shifts to New Zealand where Amisha meets the second Hrithik and then we all know how it will go about, Then again there is a shift towards the crime saga and the film ends as an actionner. There are several great scenes like the reunion of Hrithik and his brother, The action packed climax and many more scenes are well shot, especially the scenes involving Rohit and Amisha.
Direction by Rakesh Roshan is good Music by Rajesh Roshan was a big hit, The title song is superbly sung by Udit and Alka, while Pyaar Ki Kashti Mein is also a great song, Chaand Sitare by Kumar Sanu is seeped in melody while Sitaron ki Mehfil gets a boost due to it's picturisation and great singing by Babul Supriyo and superb dancing skills of Hrithik. This film marked debut of Lucky Ali as a playback singing, Ek Pal and Kyun Chalti are fantastic songs, Jaaneman too is a great song by Asha however there are too many songs in the first half.
Hrithik Roshan had good looks, In the first half he resembled Rakesh Roshan a bit in some scenes, he was very sincere in his debut and created a different personality for both the roles which is amazing for a newcomer. Amisha Patel with a dubbed voice is decent for her debut. Their chemistry was amazing. Fine, it has a Hrithik Roshan, and he gives a fantastic first performance, but come on, this film contains too many clichés to be called totally great. Ancient story, usual romance, cheesy dialogues are the correct descriptions for this mediocre film. I had so many expectations from this film because I generally like Rakesh Roshan's films and because it had such a positive reception. Well, but this was actually Rakesh's first film in a list of films made to promote his baby Hrithik. I started watching the film. I waited and waited hoping it would get better, but nothing happened. This film was just another commercial film and it fell flat. A guy meets a girl, they fall in love, he is killed by some criminals, time goes by and she meets another guy who looks exactly like her dead boyfriend. An ordinary romance turns into a thriller, and this thriller does not stand either.
Of course, not everything is that bad. The music is nice, and Hrithik Roshan gives a very impressive debut performance. He is good looking, his expressions are correct, and he is convincing in the two roles, though he is far better as Rohit, the simple guy, because he was a bit unnatural in his first few scenes as Raj, the cool guy. Anyway, it is just a debut role - I think he deserved all the acclaim, although he certainly deserved to win all the awards he won for his performance in that year's gem Fiza (where he was much better) rather than this average flick. I think it goes without saying that without him this film would have been totally unwatchable. Amisha Patel is pretty average in her debut performance and it's quite obvious that her voice was dubbed in this film. Charming love story

Beautiful young woman falls in love with poor, but honest, young man. He witnesses a crime committed by associates of her father, and is murdered on the eve of the concert which would have made him a huge success. Heartbroken young woman is sent to New Zealand, where fate has a strange trick to play upon her. Another young man with the face of her murdered love.
The story is not particularly original, but is materially lifted by the engaging performances of the two leads. This was Hrithik's debut, and as such it is a very assured performance. He is heart-meltingly sweet as both Rohit and Raj, and he does manage to convey the differences between them quite effectively (quite a difficult task as they are both "nice" young men).
The songs are quite catchy, and whilst the dancing isn't as good as Hrithik's later films, I fully understand why this film made him a superstar. Theatrically, not especially challenging, but he manages to play the two roles as two different people.

I recently wrote an article for Influx Magazine about my love for Indian films. However, if I'd started with "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai", I doubt if I would have wanted to watch another Bollywood film. I find this strange, as the film was HUGELY popular and won a ton of awards-- including the IIFA awards for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director among others. Why did I dislike the film so much? Well, it's simply plastered from start to finish with clichés--and was sloppily written. Now I know that formula films are popular in India and the film was wildly successful, but this sort of film simply wouldn't do so well in the States because of the writing. I can think of many Indian films I liked much more--such as "Kahaani" and "Three Idiots"--films which were more original and lacked the strong formulaic qualities of "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai".
Hrithik Roshan (the director's son) and Kareena Kapoor both star in this film--and both went from being unknowns to mega-stars because of this movie. Rohit (Roshan) is a poor but exceptionally handsome singer who sees a woman, Sonia (Kapoor), in the next car. He's smitten and it's love at first sight (cliche #1). Later, they meet and they instantly hit it off. Now, considering how much they are interested in each other, how would you expect Sonia to behave? Yep...she's irritable, nasty and pushes him away constantly for no discernible reason (cliche #2).
Later they get marooned on an island and, surprise, surprise, they argue and fight but later come to fall for each other (cliche #3). They return home and plan on getting married--when disaster strikes and they cannot yet get married (cliche #4). And, in the interim, she travels to New Zealand and meets a man who is the exact double for Rohit (cliche #5).
More clichés exist in this film....but you get the picture. The bottom line is that I hate it when plots seem contrived and formulaic--and this film clearly is both. Now it's not all bad--the stars gave nice performances when they weren't behaving stupidly. Plus, if you are looking for eye candy, both stars are quite beautiful. Roshan in particular is just pretty...not necessarily rugged--just very, very pretty. And, although the songs sounded tinnier than more recent Indian films, they were catchy. The bottom line is that I do not understand the reasons for this film's amazing success.

They return home and plan on getting married--when disaster strikes and they cannot yet get married (cliche #4). And, in the interim, she travels to New Zealand and meets a man who is the exact double for Rohit (cliche #5).
More clichés exist in this film....but you get the picture. The bottom line is that I hate it when plots seem contrived and formulaic--and this film clearly is both. Now it's not all bad--the stars gave nice performances when they weren't behaving stupidly. Plus, if you are looking for eye candy, both stars are quite beautiful. Roshan in particular is just pretty...not necessarily rugged--just very, very pretty. And, although the songs sounded tinnier than more recent Indian films, they were catchy. The bottom line is that I do not understand the reasons for this film's amazing success.

Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai is without doubt a very entertaining movie
and a great launchpad for Hrithik Roshan, the son of actor/director Rakesh Roshan. At the start of the movie he is lovable as any Bollywood actor can be as a struggling singer. Amisha is just the cute looker needed to make Hrithik look like a great lover. Of course, Amisha has done her job well, which is basically to look cute. :) The second entry of Hrithik makes him look real dashing and we get to see 2 avataars of Hrithik in one movie. There is no comment about how this is possible in the film. Rakesh Roshan had used the second avataar formula for double roles in Karan Arjun where he had made a weird unacceptable explaination... Here he solves the problem by giving no explaination. Who cares, right as long as we get to see 2 Hrithiks for the price of one. :)

In this romantic thriller, working class Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) and wealthy Sonia (Ameesha Patel) fall in love. When Rohit is killed, everyone supposes it to be an accident. Sonia goes to New Zealand where she meets Raj (also played by Roshan) who bears an uncanny resemblance to Rohit. Returning to India, they discover that Rohit was murdered, and they try to uncover the killers.
The first half of the film is a cute romance with typical resistance from Sonia's father (Anupam Kher) and the couple's determination to find a way. The second half of the film is a rather exciting drama while the two try to stay alive and unmask the bad guys. Roshan and Patel both made their film debuts in this movie, and both showed a surprising maturity and poise in their acting. Neither the music nor the choreography were special--just average Bollywood fare. Despite that, this is a well-acted, quite enjoyable film.

In them days Bollywood films didn't used to come to cinemas in uk so I watched this film at home with my family when I got hold of a copy from a movie rental shop. At the time I didn't know anything about the film I just got it cause it was new. It was very surprising with how good it was we first got to see hrithik roshan for the first time like the rest of the world discovered the next big superstar. Sadly his career didnt go so well for a few years after then but this film was big at the time and it still doesn't feel old watching it even today. Possibly the movie of amisha petels career cause she was an awful actor which was noticed in all her other films. This is a prefect family movie I would recommend it anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

I must say that i am a dedicated Bollywood supporter and only recently had the opportunity of seeing this movie for the second time, forming a definite opinion. what a load of nonsense! this is the typical bollywood movies, that makes you cringe everytime the actors say a word! I had heared so much about Amisha that i had envisioned this radient beauty, much to my disappointment. In fact, she is rather plain. Kirti Reddy looks better than her! Hrithik, the one and only good thing abou the movie, looks good, and acts even better! I found the soundtrack to be lacking something and the dance sequences PATHETIC!!! Farah Khan - capable of so much more! The sequence in the title track had me in fits of laughter! PATHETIC!!!
So, is there anything else that was good about this movie? Not really. Hrithik...Hrithik...Hrithik. other than that - NO. where the hype came from, heaven knows. i thought this was distinctly average!

A movie that will make you fall in love with the lead actor!
This is Hrithik Roshan's first film. And apart from being able to act, the guy has incredible screen presence.
There are some inconsistencies in his "looks" and the director at times has forgotten that the actor is not his son Hrithik but a character Raj/Rohit yet the movie is a must see!
This is the lead stars' first film and both of them have performed superbly. Out-an-out a Hrithik movie, Amisha has held her own considering she was a secondary ...well, fourth important ingredient to make this movie a success. She is awesome as Sonia!
In KN..PH, Hrithik demonstrates his dancing, acting, fighting, emotive abilities and more. The soundtrack and the movie are a must for bollywood fans "home collection of movies and CDs"

I totally understand how this movie launched Hrithik Roshan into the stratosphere because he's a hunk and he can truly dance.
But the film should be judged separately from the sensation that it caused. The film is annoying because the song is bad. Half way through the movie, my friends and I all shouted "Get a new song!" We just needed to hear the first few notes, and we would hit the mute.
Amisha Patel is OK in her role, but not brilliant, and the plot is too sugary to be believed. I will say there were some scenes with excellent cinematography.
All in all, see Hrithik in something else. 4 out of 10

Catchy songs, great dancing, beautiful locations, decent story with a touch of "Vertigo (1958)" and the debut of Hrithik Roshan, Bollywood's (Hollywood's?) next superstar. Not to be missed if you are into commercial Indian films, if not, worth a try anyway. Attention! This movie can be addictive. Consume with moderation, now that the DVD is out. :-)

This movie is great. Good locales, good direction, average story. The highlight of the movie is Hrithik Roshan. He is seen to be believed. Great looks, great physique, great acting, and what a dancer!! Couldn't keep my eyes off him. He's going to go places this guy. Amisha Patel is great too.

This film was my introduction to Bollywood films. I have to admit I watched it simply because of the looks of the lead actor Hrithik Roshan. Wow! He can act too. The film is beautifully photographed. The music and dancing are very western and very well done. After this I watched several other Bollywood films, some with much more traditional Indian themes and music, and I love them all. This one is very accessible for American audiences, and if it leaves you wanting more see HUM DIL DO CHUKE SANAAM, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, BOMBAY, and DIL SE just to get started.

I love this movie so much. I think I have seen it 6 times and every time is a new experience. First off, when reading the trivia I learned that Hrithik asked his father to choose someone new other than Shahrukh Khan. That was a smart move. Although I love SRK, he is famous already and sometimes it is boring to see the same faces over and over again. I'm glad Hrithik changed this father's mind. Second, this was a beautiful entrance in introduce two new stars. Hrithik did not over act like in Mujhse Dosti Karonge and he was quite entertaining in this movie. Amisha (surprise) did not overact that much either. She was smooth and didn't do her hyperventilating crying. She added substance into the movie so it would be quite entertaining and Hrithik can flex his muscles and vent his anger. She and her cousin (in the movie) were funny. The story line, cinematography, songs and directing were wonderful and appealing. Rakesh Roshan and (I think) Rajesh (with the songs) did amazing jobs, making the audience thirsty for the songs and newcomers Hrithik Roshan and Amisha Patel.

After reading about Hrithik Roshan, Bollywood's hottest movie star in GQ magazine, I was truly amazed at his popularity in his native India. I later watched the dvd release of KNPH, Hrithik Roshan's first hit movie. Directed by his father, this spirited romp is actually a made-to-order showcase for his handsome and talented son. Suffice to say that this film would have been very average, save for Hrithik Roshan who carries the entire production on his able shoulders. His charm and intense style are certainly enough to catch the interest of most any movie-goer.
Much of the movie is devoted to loving shots of Hrithik in various poses, and I'm certain that the female audiences in Mumbai were swooning in the crowded aisles each time he sang and danced. Much of what occurs on screen looks like a Hindi pop music video made for even pre-teenage audiences. A good comparison would be to the old movies of Elvis Presley! This may have had a bit more realism and action than those, but the entire proceedings focus on Hrithik's singing, dancing, and posing in a way that glamorizes him to that extent. It's obvious that multi-talented Hrithik Roshan could make it big in the U.S. if he so desires. That's the one thing that I will certainly remember out of this somewhat shallow, but lighthearted and colorful movie.
