Since Mongolia doesn’t often produce genre films, Disorder is a rare treat. Batdelger Byambasuren’s debut certainly comes across as horror in that first minute, seeing as it opens with a young woman trapped inside a burning room, screaming for help. The film then reveals the sequence was a mere nightmare. However, an external shot of the same character’s immediate environment, a foreboding and carceral school, ensures the audience that this is indeed a horror story. Of course Disorder has a tendency to toy with perceptions, even without its characters or viewers realizing that fact.
Schools are often used to illustrate critiques about government and society, especially in horror films from Asia. From Whispering Corridors to Detention, the school is a perfect setting for addressing and digesting bigger political and social concerns. To an unaware observer, Disorder is reproaching the elites who give their children an unfair advantage...

Along with stories of evil inanimate objects and vengeful ghosts, 2000s South Korean horror looked at society through a sinister lens. Popular New Wave franchises like Whispering Corridors and Death Bell criticized the demanding education system while other K-horrors examined less tangible problems. Yun Jae-yeon’s Yoga (Yoga Hakwon) sounds like it would be about killer […]

During the original J-horror boom of the late 1990s and early 2000s, South Korea had its own spurt of ghostly genre fare at the time with the “Whispering Corridors” films leading the charge. When the first film arrived in 1998, it was concurrent with the Japanese wave being produced at the time and carried along nicely as a fine counterbalance as it eventually ended up spawning several non-related follow-ups that centered around ghostly happenings at an all-girls school. After a few years of inactivity, now first-time director Lee Mi-young resurrects the franchise with enjoyable results in this latest entry.
Arriving at Gwangju High School for girls, students Ha-yeon (Kim Hyun-soo), Ye-ji (Lee Ji-won), So-yeon (Choi Ri), Mi-seok (Seo Hye-won), and Jae-yun (Park Se-hyun) meet up with Noh Eun-hee (Kim Seo-hyeong) the new vice principal to the school. Gyeonggi Province, where the festival is held raised its disease status to Level 4 on the fifth day of the eleven-day festival. But festival organizers said that they were able to work through the mass of disease-prevention restrictions and regulations and achieve the result that they had aimed for.
“BiFan could not avoid having visitors who turned out to be positive for Covid-19. However, thanks to thorough prevention and follow-up measures, no transmission of the virus at any of the festival venues has been reported as of July 20,” organizers said.

Korean entertainment powerhouse Cj Entertainment has amped up its overseas filmmaking efforts to the point that it is now producing more movies outside Korea than at home.
At FilMart in Hong Kong, Cj unveiled a slate of 13 new titles hailing from the U.S., Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.
“Our aim is to find hidden gem-like creators in local industries, and support them … by producing quality local films together,” said Jerry Ko, Cj’s head of international.
“We are not just passive investors. In Thailand and Vietnam we are working with partners but are also fully involved in packaging, casting, distributing and selling,” said Choi Yeonu, chief producer within Cj’s international production team. “And we have strong IP.”
The company’s “Miss Granny” has been remade in seven countries, while its “Sunny” has been made in Korea, Vietnam and Japan. A fourth, in Indonesia, was unveiled earlier this month.

Billed as a horror movie, Acacia is likely to disappointment those of you expecting the next genre genre classic. This 2003 shocker has little in common with the likes of Shutter and Ju-on, sharing the sidewalk with offbeat family dramas rather than twisted tales of revenge. There is a supernatural edge of course and at times Park Ki-Hyung (Whispering Corridors) delivers an effectively eerie ghost story, but in truth, Acacia spends too much time crawling when it should be creeping. An artist and her husband are unable to have children of their own so they adopt a young boy named Jin-sung. He's a quiet, unassuming child who develops a strange fascination with the acacia tree in the back yard. Shortly after, the couple discover that they are able to conceive, and with the arrival of a new baby, Jin-sung mysteriously vanishes. Did he run away? Why are his parents acting so strangely,...

When the humidity begins to turn all of your clothes into wet rags, you know summer has arrived in Korea, which also means that it's K-horror season in the nation's multiplexes. Though the country has a long history of horror going back to the films of Kim Ki-young (The Housemaid, 1960), Lee Man-hee (Black Hair, 1966) and Shin Sang-ok (A Thousand Year Old Fox, 1969), its modern incarnation began in 1998 with the first entry in the enduring Whispering Corridors series. Since then the industry has produced a large body of straight horror films that includes modern classics such as Memento Mori (1999), A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) and Possessed (2009), while many other works have also successfully implemented elements of horror, such as...

Some 14 years after Sadako crawled from the television set, the influence of Hideo Nakata’s classic “Ringu” is still very much in evidence in the Asian horror genre. New Korean shocker “Don’t Click” is a perfect example of this, a film revolving around a haunted internet video whose viewers all end up mysteriously dead. The film was directed by Kim Tae Kyung, who certainly knows his way around the genre, having helmed popular K-horror outings “Ghost” and “Muoi: The Legend of a Portrait”, and features a cast of young up and coming talents, headlined by Kang Byul (recently in “Punch” and whose first big screen appearance came in “Whispering Corridors 5”), Park Bo Young (“Scandal Makers”) and Joo Won (“Siu”). Kang Byul stars as Jung Mi, a young student who blackmails her older sister Se Hee’s (Park Bo Young) boyfriend (Joo Won) into getting her access to forbidden videos...

Director: Chang. Review: Adam Wing. Stop me if you’ve heard this one, what do you get if you cross Whispering Corridors with the Saw franchise and Battle Royale? The debut feature of music video director Yoon Hong-Seung (aka Chang), that’s what. Ok so I admit, the punchline needs some work, but there’s a reason why Chang has been compared to Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze. Death Bell has already been blessed with a sequel back home, so there’s never been a better time to catch up with this 2008 South Korean hit. Starring Lee Beom-soo in his first horror movie role, and K-pop singer Nam Gyu-ri in her acting debut, Death Bell takes a familiar Asian ghost story concept and smothers it in blood, chaos and cruelty. Set in a Korean high school, the films native title refers to gosa, the important midterm exams that all students are required to sit.

It's kind of ironic that the realization came by watching something as far from the concept of femininity as Kwak Kyung-Taek's 친구 - 우리들의 전설 (Friend - Our Legend) is, but maybe that's another proof of how much depth and meaning his first ever TV drama had. That is, in the midst of what you'd expect to be raging machismo and tidal waves of testosterone, what often stood out instead were the women - Busan's tough as nails women, with the charisma and panache of divas from the Golden Age, their often rugged exterior chiseled by time. Generalizations are always the most friendly of compeers when trying to make a point, but meet any woman (particularly of a few generations older than today's teenagers) from Busan, and you'll feel that unique color, mixing their often disarmingly pragmatic ways with the irresistible warmth and joie de vivre their exterior seldom reveals.

There's usually a direct correlation between the health of a film industry and the amount of sequels it produces, at least when it comes to Chungmuro. Whereas you'd find the 60s littered with all sorts of franchises (from action to melodramas), all you could find in the 1990s of the pre-renaissance were timid attempts to bank on a hit's success, like in the case of 투캅스 (Two Cops) or the 깡패수업 (Hoodlum Lessons) series, which went from a Kitano-esque black comedy to a lurid straight-to-video nostalgia trip with "stars" of dubious relevance. It would be hard to call today's industry healthy, as the majority of films struggle to break even while two-three juggernauts by the majors break records left and right, but sequel fever has made its return in full force, and is likely to become one of the leading trends of 2010, for better or worse.

Since the release of “Whispering Corridors” over a decade ago, high schools have been fertile ground for suspense in Korean cinema, as director Lee Sang Yong again shows with “4th Period Mystery”. The film’s alternate title, “Detectives in 40 Minutes” gives a pretty good indication of its premise, following a couple of students who have to solve a seemingly random murder within the time constraints of a single lesson period. Unsurprisingly, the film features a fresh faced cast, including popular teen actor Yoo Seung Ho, progressing from his breakthrough role in the acclaimed “The Way Home” and debut starlet Kang So Ra, with adult support from the likes of Park Chul Min and Jeong Seok Yong. The film is a high concept affair, as the school’s number one student Jeong Hun (Yoo Seung Ho) walks into his classroom during a break in lessons, only to find his rival Tae...

The landmark Korean ghost series “Whispering Corridors” returns for its fifth instalment with “A Blood Pledge”, marking the debut of director Lee Jong Yong, an interesting choice for the helm, given his previous work under Park Chan Wook on the likes of “Jsa” and “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance”. The film continues very much in the tradition of its predecessors, being set at an all-girls school, dealing with contemporary themes and concerns of friendship, and of course presenting a new set of up and coming young actresses no doubt hoping to follow in the footsteps of former “Whispering” alumni Kim Min Sun, Kim Ok Bin, Kim Kyu Ri, Seo Ji Hye, and Choi Kang Hee. Interestingly, the film not only performed well at the domestic box office, but is the first of its brethren to have been mooted for a possible Hollywood remake. The plot begins in suitably morbid fashion, as...

Whispering Corridors 5: A Blood Pledge, the fifth instalment in the massively popular (with good reason, for some of them) Korean horror franchise, is up for pre-order on English subtitled DVD. Lee Jong Yong (who worked with Park Chan Wook on Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) takes to the helm with his first feature, for a tale of teen suicide pacts and vengeful spirits. This 2-Disc edition come with audio commentary, making of, deleted scenes, promotion footage, soundtrack, music video, trailers, and other special features goes on sale next week. A group of schoolgirls who swear a blood pact of friendship so strong, that they even agree they will all die together. When one of the teens spectacularly kills herself by skydiving from a roof, the remaining girls see the error of their ways and decide death isn’t actually all that enticing after all. I should have known what I was in for, but I didn’t. Debbi from Palisades Tartan had called me and said they had a great new film called The Butcher they wanted to send, but she warned it was pretty extreme. “Hell yeah!” I said, knowing that I love to watch and write about extreme films. By the time, The Butcher arrived in the mail I had completely forgotten about the warning. I made some mac –n-cheese, popped in the disc, and sat down for a pleasant horror film. The Butcher is not pleasant. It is an intense and sinister experience that is not for the faint of heart or weak of soul. I also don’t recommend you eat mac- n-cheese while viewing.

Like us you may need to take a second to get over that “huh, eh, what?” moment, when first reading the title for this latest Korean horror, Yoga School. Aside from pulling a muscle performing the “Lion Pose” (had to look that up on Wiki!) badly, Yoga doesn’t strike you as fertile ground for scares. Well perhaps we’ll need to think again. Yun Jae-yeon who previously displayed her horror filmmaking skills with ‘Whispering Corridors 3: Wishing stairs,’ is at the helm of this particular frightener. Add to that a star cast, more than half of which (including; Lee Young-jin, Kim Hye-na, Cha Soo-yeon and Park Han-byul) have had previous experience in horror films, makes for a intriguing mix on its must-see-o-meter score. Yoga School is released in Korea on August 20th.

Picking up where the now-defunct Tartan Video left off, the newly formed Palisades Tartan company has announced its initial pair of releases under the Asia Extreme banner. One of them is The Butcher, a exercise in extreme vérité violence from Korean director Kim Jin-won.
Set to street October 27, The Butcher is set in a remote warehouse that has been turned into a snuff moviemaking center, and presents all of its action from the points of view of video cameras either wielded by the villains, or mounted on helmets worn by the victims. The extreme splatter created by Lee Chang-man (whose credits include R-point and Whispering Corridors, among numerous others) will be presented in anamorphic widescreen with stereo sound, accompanied by:
Alternate ending Behind-the-scenes photos Storyboard sketches Retail price is $19.99; cover art is coming soon. Set for release Oct. 13 is a Terror Pack containing three discs previously issued separately by Tartan: Sheitan,...

Summer is the season for scary movie watching in Korea but aside from the upcoming creature feature Chaw and franchise sequel Whispering Corridors 5, much like last year, 2009 is looking light for local horror flicks. Korean distributors have again had to look further a field to find something to fill those theatre seats with eager fright fans, and this year they've hit pay dirt by snapping up the two new Ju-on (The Grudge) horrors “Old Woman in white” and “Girl in Black.” Good news for Korean horror fans, and for us, when the English subtitled DVDs arrive shortly after. There isnt much in the way of content on the Korean website for the pic just yet. There is however a creepy as hell new teaser trailer to take a peek at, from the link below. Ju-on opens in Korea July 9th.

The hugely popular Korean “Whispering Corridors” franchise returns for a 5th instalment, with a tale of teen suicide pacts and vengeful (aren’t they always?) spirits, in Whispering Corridors 5: Blood pledge. The bloody fun centres on a group of schoolgirls who swear a blood pact of friendship so strong, that they even agree they will all die together. When one of the troop of teens tops herself by skydiving off a roof, the remaining gals see the error of their ways and decide death isn’t all that enticing after all. The ghost of their dead friend - on the other hand - is hell bent on ensuring they honour their promise. Head to the link to check out the now live official site, where theres trailers and some great posters to be seen. Corridors opens in Korea next month.

When it comes to the world of Asian horror few series have run as long, with as much success as Korea’s Whispering Corridors. The hugely popular series of horror pictures first arrived on the scene in 1998 and became the prototypical summer horror franchise in the nation. Characters change from installment to installment but what the entire series shares is the setting of an all girl’s high school. And now here comes installment number five, this one revolving around a group of girls who swear a blood oath of friendship and devotion, swearing even to go into death with each other. Which becomes a problem when one of the girls commits suicide and the rest are haunted by spiritual forces intent on holding them to their oath ...
Expect a summer release for this one and check out the first teaser below the break!

Personally, I have a bit of a speculative fiction bent (with a penchant for post-apocalyptic flavours) and an aversion to long winded film franchises, here are the ground rules for this weeks Twitch-o-Meter. A couple cases below may benefit from splitting up the adaptation into more than one film (as is the trend these days, at least evidenced mightily with the works of J.R.R. Tolkien) might help ease the burden of adapting the dense plotting, but then we are talking story telling, not the typical breeding ground for repetition and diminishing returns that plagues both American and International sequels (The Alien franchise anyone? Infernal Affairs? Ringu? Whispering Corridors? Ginger Snaps? Highlander?)
But first, a few notes on what is not included on the list, but might have been some years ago. Certainly Cormac McCarthy’s The Road would have been on this list if it was not already in post-production...

Ever since, when was it, 1998? It felt like a tradition, the summer onslaught of Korean horror flicks, with their shiny shells and often dubious genre sensibilities. If anything, it was a great training farm for young actors, especially female ones. If you just look at the High School Horror Series which started from 여고괴담 (Whispering Corridors) in 1998 and went all the way to 목소리 (Voice), the amount of fresh new talent emerging through those films is staggering. But, save for the occasional highlight a la 장화, 홍련 (A Tale of Two Sisters), the genre had become a mere training farm for new directors, a proving ground that replaced the wear and tear of short films. The results were a lot of good looking but ordinary projects, and box office prospects vanishing into thin air.

Asylum (2008)
Directed by David R. Ellis
It seems all the madness surrounding Ellis’ last effort, Snakes on a Plane, popped something in his head and he decided the only way to follow it up would be with the most generic, bland, impotent kind of horror film. Enter Asylum, the story of a group of new kids at college who find out their new dorm is adjacent to the former stomping grounds of a doctor who got off on conducting experiments on kids their age. Lameness follows. Be sure to read our Asylum DVD review for more! Buy it here!
