All the hard work that goes into three minutes of screen time...
Doylenf28 March 2008
A sequence in THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY required a three minute scene depicting JAMES GARNER and JAMES COBURN emerging from the water and engaging in a battle scene recreating D-Day WWII's action on the Normandy beachhead.

For this three minute scene, four months of preparation went into rigging the scaffolds to hold cameras and equipment, including heavy lights (even for daytime filming), dredging the sand to plant explosives set to go off by cue, and finally training the actors to know where the explosives were planted and how to avoid injuries during the actual shot.

Garner is shown taking directions from director Arthur Hiller as he and Coburn prepare for the shot.

An interesting glimpse of the painstaking effort that goes into making even a brief scene in an effort to recreate an historical event with authenticity. Fortunately for all concerned, the scene, using four cameras shooting simultaneously, went off without a hitch.

Action on the Beach is an interesting curio about the filming of a certain sequence in The Americanization of Emily

The recent death of James Garner got me to finally borrow The Americanization of Emily from my local library. In the DVD there was also some extras like the theatrical trailer, commentary from director Arthur Hiller, and this-a promotional film from M-G-M that probably was shown on TV after a movie that ran short in the two-hour timeslot. It showcased the filming of the D-Day Invasion sequence from pre-production with producer Martin Ransohoff climbing some of the scaffolding to Arthur Hiller directing stars Garner and James Coburn through their paces. We also see the crew having lunch and setting up shots and lighting (even during sunny days). Not mentioned is the anti-heroic characterizations of Garner and Coburn though when this ends with a scene from the movie with Garner and Julie Andrews in a loving embrace, she mentions how she can love James' character but wouldn't want to marry him! Interesting curio for anyone getting the DVD.

It's not that interesting...it's just a bit of self-promotion.

This short film (only 6 minutes) is included as a DVD extra for the film "The Americanization of Emily". It's the original MGM promotional film that was released to draw attention to the upcoming movie. However, instead of focusing on the two leads, James Garner and Julie Andrews, its focus is on re-staging the Normandy invasion at D-Day. I thought this odd, as the landing didn't seem particularly large or convincing in the film and listening to the narrator droning about how difficult it was re-staging this seemed like disingenuous self-promotion. And, like most films of its type, it's not at all self-critical or anything other than a 'rah-rah for us' sort of thing. Easy to skip.
