- The film depicts the increasingly dangerous political climate in Cuba following Fidel Castro's rise to power, and its effect on Cuban citizens (particularly the LGBTQIA+ population). As such, there is a theme of desolation and hopelessness throughout, and such conditions within the nation understandably bring out the worst in some of the characters.
- A policeman puts a pistol inside the mouth of the protagonist and taunts him.

- At the end of the film, the main character is diagnosed with AIDS and dies via assisted suicide. His lover smothers him with a plastic bag.
- A man dies in an accident involving a malfunctioning hot air balloon. We see the balloon fall to the earth, followed by a shot of the man's motionless body.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- One of the more troubling scenes involves a man stealing a hot air balloon being built for several people. It is an act fueled by desperation as the balloon is being built for people who want to escape the island. The balloon unfortunately crashes before even going overseas, and the man dies on impact.
