In the 54 years since Diahann Carroll (“Julia”) blazed a trail as the first Black female recipient of a TV Golden Globe, the list of small screen Black actresses who have won the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has grown to include 12 more names, including 2023 comedic and dramatic champs Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Zendaya (“Euphoria”). While this roster has long since covered TV movies and both continuing program genres, no Black woman has yet been awarded a Golden Globe for a limited series performance. There is a decent chance of that soon changing, however, given the winning potential of possible 2024 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress contenders Uzo Aduba (“Painkiller”) and Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”).

The Apple TV+ streaming service launches this Friday with awards contenders like “See,” which has been campaigning for a Golden Globe nomination in the Best TV Drama Series category since March. Apple traveled Globe voters during a day of reshoots then up to the waterside forest set near Vancouver, capping with an interactive demonstration by the show’s “Cultural Designer and Supervising Movement Choreographer” Paradox Pollack.

Starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard, the epic is set centuries after a virus decimates humanity and leaves the survivors blind. Apple provided the press with the first three episodes, titled “Godflame,” “Message in a Bottle” and “Fresh Blood,” all of which were written by Steven Knight and directed by Francis Lawrence.

MGM apparently has released Vol1 along with Vol2 of their Women of Color set simultaneously. At first had searched about to even find it elsewhere and it would seem only to show up on Amazon’s website. It may appear at other locations such as Target and Walmart. Upon this new line-up the surprise entry is Holiday Heart. Surprise not due to that fact that one of the women of color on the box is actually Ving Rhames but mostly because this was a made for TV film. This now opens up the flood gates to what can be represented in future volumes. Would be nice to see Julie Dash’s Funny Valentines on a set as it was a great made for TV feature but sadly is not an MGM film so don’t expect to see that one.

It’s not the tightest of flicks, but when it comes to the sordid history of films adapted from sketches on Saturday Night Live, MacGruber (Universal, Not Rated, Blu-Ray-$39.98 Srp) scores in the upper percentile, alongside the likes of Wayne’s World and Stuart Saves His Family. Wil Forte’s MacGyver parody does the right thing by playing the elements around his bombastic action hero with seriousness.
