A classic worth buying on PSN
sockbotclp413 February 2018
Ripto's Rage is best game in the Spyro Trilogy. Insomniac were getting off their feet with Spyro 1, learning how to make a good game, and responding to criticism and feedback from their first adventure with the purple dragon. Their second game fixes almost everything wrong with the first game then some.

Tom Kenny now does the voice of Spyro, which is a huge improvement from Carlos Alazraqui. This game also has a more saturated color scheme compared to the first game, alongside a more varied environment, enemy and character design. What's unique about the levels in Ripto's Rage is that they don't follow a specific theme or gimmick, and at times can look quite surreal. Levels such as Breeze Harbor and Idol Springs show the beauty the original PlayStation was capable of producing.

Perhaps the greatest feature of Ripto's Rage is its storytelling. Before each level loads there is an opening cinematic giving a brief synopsis of the problems the residents of this realm face. Not only is this a great way of showing exposition without reading boring dialogue boxes like in the first Spyro game and YotD, but it also provides cheap, childish jokes, which would always amuse me as a kid.

My only criticism for this game is that it's far too short. There are only three home-worlds, eighteen levels and four speedways. Each homeworld is named after three of the four seasons of the year (excluding spring.) This has led to many Spyro fans speculating of a possible fourth homeworld that was never implemented in the game, although there is no confirmation of this from Insomniac Games or in the game's code. Fortunately, several Spyro fanatics have taken the liberty of forging their own fangame: Spyro 2: Spring Savanna, set in the mythical forth homeworld of Avalar. Think of it as a DLC for Ripto's Rage. Some brilliant people have worked on this project and its looking pretty good from the trailers they've released on YouTube.

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage
Terryfan9 September 2015
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage is one of those game sequels shows how you can make a sequel so good just like the first game.

Spyro The Dragon remains one of my favorite game series. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage offers quite the surprise.

Spyro 2 added more playing time as well as new levels and characters to the game series.

The graphics are very well done and the art work is very good it is just like looking a art work.

The sound effect is very good and the music is really well done and each level gets their own theme plus the voice acting is pretty good and entertaining the cast really did sound like they enjoy voicing the game.

The controls offer a fun game play and it will gets you right into the game.

The game also allows for new features that were not feature in the first game such as Spyro can now swim and glide longer.

The problem with the game however is some of the levels can be challenging and also most enemies are a pain to fight

Overall Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage is one of the best sequels to any video game.

Great game play, very good graphics, music and story telling the game is a must play

I give Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage an 8 out of 10

A great improvement over its already excellent predecessor

Warning: Spoilers
After playing the fun-yet-frustrating Spyro The Dragon, I jumped straight to Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage without any knowledge of how the game would be. Seeing that the game was released just a year after the original, I assumed Spyro 2 would be another formulaic, episodic entry where all gameplay element and structure would be the same - only that there'd be new levels and enemy NPCs. That was not the case.

Much of the game plays like the original, where we control the eponymous character as he fights against various enemies and obstacles using his flame breath, charge attack, and glide abilities. Instead of rescuing frozen dragons, the player must acquire a talisman from each realm, which is awarded for reaching the end of the level. Each level also contains a certain number of orbs, which can be earned by completing secondary tasks for NPCs.

The gems gathered in this game are used to pay for opening portals, granting access to certain areas, and acquiring new abilities that allow the player to reach hidden areas for additional gems/missions/orbs. In addition, each level has a power-up gate, activated after defeating a specific number of enemies in a level, which grants Spyro a temporary super-ability. The power-up can grant invulnerability or the abilities to fly, supercharge, super flame, breathe ice, or super jump to reach high up areas.

The story follows Spyro and his dragonfly Sparx, who decide to take a vacation at Dragon Shores but are unwillingly transported to the fantasy realm of Avalar. The inhabitants there live in fear of an warlock called Ripto and his henchmen, Gulp and Crush - whom Spyro must defeat with the help of Elora the Faun, Hunter the Cheetah, and the Professor.

Spyro 2 has several new and much improved features over the original, including several more levels that are more open-ended and a good variation of missions and challenges. The new cast of characters, including fauns, satyrs, anthropomorphic animals, and robotic businessmen, among others makes for a fresher sight than the dragons who were the only friendly NPCs in the first game.

Not only is the art direction fantastic, with each world and its characters given their distinct personality and life, but so is the simplistic-yet-innocent humor delivered by the writing and the voice-acting.

The gems collected in this game are actually of a gameplay use compared to the first one, where you simply collected them to acquire a 100% completion without using them as currency. Even the checkpoint system has been improved where at every gradual interval, there's a fairy who 'zaps' you to save the game automatically.

Still, the game does have its limitations, some of them owing to the limitations of the PlayStation One. The camera control could have been easily fixed with the use of the right analog stick on the DualShock controller, which had been introduced for a while before the game's development. It becomes a hassle when navigating small spaces or pulling sharp turns on the flying missions without being able to properly look around.

The checkpoint system - though improved - still causes frustration during boss fights, especially the final one. Certain boss fights have multiple stages and dying in either stages forces the player to repeat all the way from the beginning in stage one.

At the end, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage is a fun and excellent game and a great improvement over its predecessors. It's a must-play classic for kids as well as adult gamers. Though there are moments of frustration when playing through some of the mini-games and challenges to achieve 100% completion, the game delivers an entertaining experience on a casual play-though.

The people from Insomniac Games have done it again!

Yet another brilliant game and the sequel to Spyro the Dragon. After defeating Gnasty Gnorc, Spyro decides that life in the dragon worlds is boring, so along with his faithful friend Sparx the Dragonfly, he goes on a trip through a portal to Dragon Shores, a theme park designed for dragons, for a well deserved rest. Meanwhile in the world of Avalar, a minute dragon-hating dictator by the name of Ripto, along with his two henchmen Crush and Gulp have taken over. So a young fawn named Elora, a clumsy cheetah named Hunter and a absent-minded professor come up with a plan to bring a dragon to Avalar by tampering with the portal in Glimmer. The gateway will shimmer, a dragon bursts into Glimmer, and guess who it turns out to be? Yes Spyro, our little purple hero, has once again gotten himself mixed up in another adventure. Elora convinces Spyro that he must stay and save Avalar and the creatures that call it home. And so the story starts. The creatures will help Spyro in return for small favours, but watch out for the greedy Moneybags, who will do anything to lay his paws on the gems Spyro collects in each level.

"As good as the first one is."

I really love the original "Spyro" on PS1, so I bought this too. And it turns out to be very well done. It really has the essence of fun like the first one. And this time, our fire-breathing hero goes to new and different world, besieged by an evil ruler. There is a lot to do in this follow-up, you even get to play some mini-games to challenge yourself. This time, it's talismans and orbs you need to collect. This one is still very fun, much better than the next "Spyro" ("Spyro: Year of the Dragon").I really love this one, the settings are better than every, there are more villains and levels than the first. Plus, you also get to use power-ups, which give you more special powers, but you'd have to kill a lot villains first, and it's fun doing so.

I'd really recommend it to any gamer. 10/10 like the first one.

A great game.

Spyro 2 is a very good game. It isn't as good as the other two, but it is still fun and original. An ugly creature named Ripto wants to bring evil to prevent Spyro from vacationing at Dragon Shores. If you are a fan of Spyro, this is a must-buy. I like all the levels, and the game is also fun because if you don't know how to play a mini-game in one level, you might be able to figure it out another day (such as I did with that mini-game in Hurricos). I recommend this game to any kind of gamer, even if you hate cute or adventure games, you should still give this and the other PsOne Spyro titles a chance.

This game was pretty damn good!

Warning: Spoilers
Oh The memories . .

I was 9 when this title was released and o boy I was hooked right from the start.

Spyro wants to take a vacation and goes through a portal but ends up in the magical world of Avaler. Here he meets Hunter, Elora and the professor who needed a dragon to get rid of the villain Ripto. Spyro ends up there in a mix up and his mission begins. He now needs to collect the magical orbs that brought him into Avalar in the first place. They now lie scattered all over the place and Spyro learns new techniques in order to collect all the items. Along the way he "befriends" a character called Moneybags who for a small fee unlocks certain parts of the game for you.

This starts the magical adventure of Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!.

The magical land of Avalar is divided into three worlds: the Summer Forest, the Autumn Plains, and the Winter Tundra. In every world there is a castle that, during the course of the story, is captured by Ripto. Each world features a number of different worlds like the speedway worlds, and a dungeon in which Ripto or his two minions are hiding in. Hunter helps you through the game along with Elora and this gives the game a great feel to it. The game play is very good and has a nice flow to it. The story is very well told and is actually a little complex with all kinds of different types of missions you have to go through to collect talismans (to defeat Ripto) and orbs (To get to dragon shores).

I loved the three first games and to me they are all time classics on the PsOne.

Platinum #50
ocesarebr22 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Just like the first Spyro game in this trilogy, I had never played this one even though it was from my time, so the affection I have for these games is completely without nostalgia. When I play the third Spyro game, it will be unprecedented because I've never played it, even though I've had the Spyro trilogy since 2018, but it will take a while because now I'm going to try some longer games before they leave the PS Plus Catalog. About the game, like the first one, it's a fantastic game, beautiful graphically, easy platinum, there's no difficulty in earning this platinum. Platinum #50 Platinum Game on January 19, 2024.
