South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is the latest auteur making the migration to television. He previously dabbled in serialized narratives by directing all six episodes of the 2018 BBC spy thriller mini-series "The Little Drummer Girl." This year, Park co-created "The Sympathizer," a Vietnam War satire starring Robert Downey Jr. and Hoa Xuande. Adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen's 2015 novel (and Pulitzer winner), Park also directed the series' first three episodes. Most recently, it's been confirmed that he's producing a TV remake of his most famous film: 2003 revenge thriller "Oldboy."

Quentin Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the finest filmmakers of our time. But as much as he is a passionate filmmaker, he is also a passionate cinephile: having absorbed the best that contemporary cinema has to offer since childhood, Tarantino bases his work on the most recognizable tropes and directorial styles, creating a refined pop culture mishmash. And as a huge film buff, Tarantino shared a list of the 20 films he 'admires the most' in a conversation with Sky Movies in 2009.
20 Must-Watch Movies According to Tarantino
Before we get to the list itself, it's important to note that it's not in order of importance, but in alphabetical order. Except for the number one, because for Tarantino it is 'favorite movie that has come out in the last 17 years.' Besides, as he pointed out, this is one of the few movies he would personally dream of directing.

Park Chan-wook's Decision to Leave is exclusively showing on Mubi in many countries in the series Luminaries.Decision to Leave. It’s been a great pleasure and privilege to talk with Park Chan-wook for my ongoing interview project. This project, which has involved 4,000 conversations with visual artists, architects, poets, film directors, and novelists, aims at bringing all the art forms together, pooling knowledge to create a polyphony of art and culture of our time.In these interviews, there are often recurrent questions about unrealized projects and advice for future artists, but I particularly emphasize beginnings: How does an artist begin? How does someone come to art, or to cinema, or to architecture? What’s the first film, the first artwork, that the artist feels is when they found their own language?I’ve known director Park Chan-wook since Joint Security Area (2000) all the way through Lady Vengeance (2005) and The Handmaiden...

There was a time when any great international actor tended to be reduced to their perceived Hollywood counterpart whenever they were discussed in the U.S. press. Under this outmoded prerogative, Korean screen icon Song Kang-ho easily could be described as his country’s simultaneous answer to both Marlon Brando and Tom Hanks, such is his seemingly contradictory blend of sardonic physicality, fearsome technique, lyrical humanism and overwhelming likability. Today, thankfully, it is sufficient to simply describe Song Kang-ho as Song Kang-ho: “One of the protean greats of world cinema — a master, end of,” as Tilda Swinton, a co-star with Song in Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer (2013), once summed him up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The division of the Korean Peninsula has long fuelled the imagination of Korean cineastes and unlocked the purse strings of local viewers. Yet while we tend to remember the more bombastic titles, such as Joint Security Area and Secret Reunion, wily filmmakers with more modest means have recently found intriguing ways to breath new life into this specific set of films. This can be through different genres such as comedy, and through allegory. Both apply to Park Jae-in's lo-fi debut film 2035. In the meantime, he’s penned a new short story which is now available to read courtesy of The New Yorker.

The Korean Film Council has picked Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave to represent South Korea at the 2023 Academy Awards in the best international feature category.
The crime drama follows police detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) called in to investigate the mysterious death of a man who fell from a mountain peak. During his investigation, he begins to develop an interest in the man’s widow, Seo-rae (Tang Wei), who is a suspect in the case.
The romantic thriller follows the Korean auteur’s 2000 commercial breakthrough with Joint Security Area, and bowed in Cannes where it earned Chan-wook the best director prize. Mubi has already picked up the film to play theatrically in the U.S. and U.K. this fall, followed by a streaming bow on its platform.
The ensemble cast for Decision to Leave includes Lee Jung-hyun, Park Yong-woo, Go Hyung-Pyo and Kim Shin-young.

Lacma has zeroed in on a pair of honorees for its Art+Film Gala. Set for Nov. 5 and presented at the museum once again in partnership with Gucci, the annual event will fete artist Helen Pashgian and filmmaker Park Chan-wook.
In making the announcement, Lacma CEO Michael Govan called Pashgian “a friend of the museum for so long” and someone who has played “an indelible role” in Southern California’s art community. Park, who will receive the tribute after making the festival rounds in Cannes and Venice with his latest Decision to Leave, is an auteur “whose unforgettable films never fail to show us the power of cinema,” Govan notes.
He adds: “Honoring these two artists together continues the vitally important dialogue between art and film that this event supports.” Eva Chow, returning as co-chair alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, called them “visionaries who have...

Coming only three years after the Palme d’Or for “Parasite,” the two Cannes prizes for Park Chan-wook as best director and for Song Kang-ho as best actor are further proof of the strength of Korean cinema’s originality, its elevated skills and its resilience.
Korean movies have been temporarily overshadowed by K-pop and Korean TV dramas – think BTS and “Squid Game” – both of which flourished during the Covid era, while Korean film was struck down by the pandemic.
Closed cinemas and disrupted release schedules meant that the film sector was not fully able to capitalize on the 2019 Cannes and multiple Oscar successes of “Parasite” and “Minari.” Korean film producers’ revenues crumbled between 2020 and early 2022. Talent from in front of and behind the camera shifted across to the more vibrant streaming sector.

What Happened This Week
We are at the halfway point of season two of Stargirl, but this episode felt more like a season finale than just a regular episode! Stargirl has been lacking in the action department all season, but this episode delivered an action scene that took up half the episode and truly delivered some compelling combat between our heroes and villains.
Mike’s Journey
Mike is at a crossroads with the Justice Society as his father doesn’t believe he can handle being a superhero (and he doesn’t have any super powers) but he is intelligent and with Zeke’s help, could become the inventor on the team. Pat is being a father first though and won’t let Mike work on anything dangerous, hence the reason he...

Cue the creepy organ music and get ready to hide under the covers because we should be afraid, very afraid.
If Stargirl Season 2 Episode 6 was anything, it was the one we've been waiting for when all the pieces come together gloriously.
We had twists and turns, dramatic reveals, and a game-changing cliffhanger. All in all, it was an outstanding installment.
Eclipso is shaping up to be the most formidable supervillain the Jsa has ever faced.
As a result, the Jsa may need to align itself with its enemies if it has any chance of defeating the demonic entity once and for all, especially now that Eclipso has escaped the Black Diamond and is once again corporeal.
Of course, this would be easier said than done if Eclipso hadn't consumed Cindy and Isaac and hadn't disabled and/or weakened the Shade. And with Artemis presumably down for the county and her parents still in prison,...

Not content with currently hitting it out of the park over at Image with Geiger, Johns pitches up with a timely reminder that although Image are his new friends, DC are his long term best buds. He obviously made his career there, and a big part of the start of that career was a rather good book called Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E that introduced a young girl called Courtney Whitmore. This character is probably dearest to John’s heart than any other, as he modelled her on his real life sister Courtney, who tragically died in a plane crash. With that book and his use of her in Jsa (another great book) Johns established Courtney/ Stargirl as a strong enough character that she ended up with her own TV show. I’ve loved the...

It seems like a universal experience with Justice Society: World War II is to come into it excited about seeing characters like Jay Garrick and Wonder Woman in action during the war, and to walk away from it stunned at how amazing Black Canary was. This isn’t just an experience for the film’s viewers: it’s one held by the movie’s creators, too.
“[Black Canary was] such an example of when you’re writing something and the character is like, ‘Hello I am present!’ She just continued to persevere through the entire script,” says Justice Society:World War II co-writer Meghan Fitzmartin.
She wasn’t alone.
“When I saw the movie, the thing that rocked my world was Elysia [Rotaru]’s portrayal of Black Canary,” co-writer Jeremy Adams agrees.
It’s a very slight reinvention for Black Canary, and it’s one that really helps cement her as a central figure in this version of the Jsa.

One of the recurring themes within some of the most successful releases of the early Korean New Wave was the conflict between the two Koreas. Films like “Shiri”, “Jsa”, “Tae Guk Gi”, among others, all featured various sides of this dispute between the two nations. However, one feature to show a unique aspect of this issue was “Silmido”, which is based on a novel that is in turn based on an incredible true story, a story which the majority of the Korean public too was unaware of until the feature’s release. A massive critical and commercial success, “Silmido” would go on to be the first Korean production to attract over 10 million viewers and eighteen years since its release, it still sits comfortably within the top 20 highest-grossing Korean films of all time at the domestic box office.

Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area (2000) will be available on Blu-ray January 19th from Arrow Video
Before Oldboy, before The Handmaiden, visionary filmmaker Park Chan-wook helmed this gripping tale of deceit, misunderstanding and the senselessness of war.
Gunfire breaks out in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, leaving two North Korean soldiers dead while a wounded South Korean soldier flees to safety. With the tenuous peace between the two warring nations on a knife-edge, a neutral team of investigators, headed by Swiss Army Major Sophie Jean, is dispatched to question both sides to determine what really happened under cover of darkness out in no-man s land.
The recipient of multiple accolades, including Best Film at South Korea s 2001 Grand Bell Awards, Jsa Joint Security Area showcases Park s iconic style in an embryonic form, and demonstrates that humanity and common purpose can be found in the most unlikely places.

"Neutral has no place here. You have to choose sides." Arrow Video has debuted an official trailer for the restored 1080p re-release of Park Chan-wook's early film known as Jsa - Joint Security Area. This first opened in South Korea in 2000, and premiered at festivals in 2001, Park's third feature at the time. I’ve always had a love/ hate relationship with Crisis on Infinite Earths. Like it or not, it has cast a huge shadow over DC’s output ever since it was published back in the 1980’s. I’ve always appreciated its intent, to clean up DC continuity (albeit for a new readership that never really turned up), and the hard work of all involved, especially George Perez. On the flip side, I was always (and still am) a huge fan of the classic Earth-2, the Justice Society, Infinity,Inc, All-Star Squadron, and the Multiverse in general. All the things that were unceremoniously swept away. This book, with Crisis and the Jsa front and centre, couldn’t have jumped out to me anymore if it tried, especially with the superb Mike Perkins on the art, and the always reliable Steve Orlando scripting.

“Jsa” is one of the films that inaugurated the new era in Korean cinema. In style, it was one of the first in the genre; in its cast, it established the careers of Park Chan-wook, Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun; in attendance, it broke the previous box office record held by “Shiri”; and in technique, it was the first in the country shot with a Super 35 camera, which is commonly used in Hollywood blockbusters. Furthermore, the construction of an exact replica of the village Panmunjeom raised the realism of the film to unprecedented heights, as was the case with its budget an unheard of amount for the time (2000) and the country
The script is based on the novel “Dmz” by Park Sang-yeon and takes place in the demilitarized zone, on the border between the two Koreas. Every aspect of the Korean society praised “Jsa,” except for one: the Army.

For the portion of Western audiences previously stuck behind the one-inch barrier of subtitles, the multi-Oscar haul by Bong Joon Ho’s dark and provocative “Parasite” was a revelation. Announced at a panel adjacent to DC’s Fandome over the weekend, the rest of the slate of DC animated features for 2021 includes a couple of very interesting choices.
The first film due out is Batman: Soul of the Dragon, a ’70s kung fu movie but with Batman. It stars Grimm star David Giuntoli as Batman; Chairman Kaga’s nephew Mark Dacascos as DC apex martial artist Richard Dragon; Kelly Hu as Lady Shiva; James Hong as O-Sensei; and Black Dynamite himself, Michael Jai White, returning to the Bronze Tiger role he played in the Arrowverse. It’s an original story about Batman and former classmate martial artists tackling a mystery from their shared past.
Following that is another original story: Justice Society: World War II. Matt Bomer, the host of an IGN panel on the next movie, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, hinted that he may be part of the voice cast.

It’s all leading to this, the season finale of Stargirl! It’s been a fun season and I’ve been looking forward to how the writers will tie everything together.
The new Fiddler, Isaac Bowin, is taking his frustration out on the school bully by punching him in the face with his tuba. Before the teacher can take him off the football field to the principal’s office, the football field opens up and a giant satellite dish rises and discharges the shockwaves from Brainwave and the American Dream project.
Jordan is walking around town, that is now filled with local residents paralyzed and staring up at the sky, when he comes upon a little girl trying to wake her father up from the American Dream trance, he is in.

The rumors are true, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam movie will also introduce characters from the Justice Society of America to the Dceu. Word on the Jsa’s inclusion has been making the rounds for some time, but one of the key members of the team (and one with ties to Black Adam) has now been cast. Via THR Noah Centineo has been cast as Albert Rothstein, the hero formerly known as Nuklon, who then took on the role of Atom Smasher when he joined the Jsa.
Albert Rothstein is the grandson of the supervillain known as Cyclotron and the godson of founding Jsa member Al Pratt, the original Atom. He can control his size and density and is tremendously strong. It’s unclear if Rothstein’s backstory will remain the same in the film, but if so, Black Adam will allow the Dceu to finally dig into some more of its past.

Well, I’ve always been a big fan of both DC’s ghost and horror anthology titles, at their peak back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and of DC’s supernatural/ magic/ horror characters. For me, they make a nice change from superheroics, and give creators a chance to show a different side to them. This new title resurrects an old DC title, Ghosts, which ran for 112 issues from 1971 to 1982, a title I still have quite a few issues of, issues that get a run out once a year at Halloween. This new title it seems is going to focus more on one and done stories featuring DC...

This week on DC’s Stargirl, Courtney teamed with all of her recruits to get a bead on what the Injustice Society is up to in Blue Valley. How did that first mission go? And what did disapproving Pat have to say about it?
After getting a glimpse at how gym rat Lawrence “Crusher” Crock and Blue Valley High phys ed teacher Paula Brooks watch out for their ultra-competitive daughter, Artemis — by killing any football coach who dares to bench her! — we found Pat waiting for Courtney to come home and confront her about assigning out Jsa costumes and tools to her friends.

This Stargirl review contains spoilers.
The new Justice Society of America comes together for their first mission on Stargirl and things don’t go entirely as planned. The result is a surprisingly strong episode that manages to successfully bring Pat back into the main narrative, even as it reminds us that though our leads may have super abilities, they’re also still teens trying to tackle an enemy that’s a lot more established and organized than they are.
It makes sense that the first outing of the new Jsa is something of a disaster. These kids barely know one another, and some (i.e. Rick) aren’t exactly taking the threat of the Injustice Society seriously. Courtney, at least, has fought a supervillain before, so she has some knowledge of how dangerous it can be. And, besides, what fun would it be if the group are all instant besties...

Stargirl Episode 3
After spending its first two installments setting up the basics of its universe and introducing its characters, Stargirl settles in for an episode that feels a bit more representative of what the show will look like going forward. And if that’s the case, it feels like we’re all going to be in for a real treat this summer.
Stargirl is hardly the first series to use its genre setting to explore the challenges of high school and the pitfalls of growing up. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville say hi from several decades ago.) But it is the first DC TV series to really tackle these kinds of stories – which Is something that’s been long overdue if you ask me – and as such, it manages to make this very familiar story feel new all over again.
Sure, Courtney Whitmore is Stargirl,...
