In 2004, Fisher Stevens went to Ohio with a coalition of artists to help John Kerry get elected president. It didn’t work, but Stevens — an actor-turned-director best known for campy roles in a string of ’80s and ’90s films such as “Short Circuit” and “Hackers” — emerged a changed man. “It was a fucked-up time,” Stevens recalled over lunch near his offices in downtown Manhattan, “but this a whole other fucked-up time.”
Flash forward a dozen years and Stevens is enmeshed in a new stage of his career, as a prolific documentarian who moonlights as an actor. Six years ago, he won an Oscar as a co-producer of “The Cove,” photographer-turned-filmmaker Louie Psihoyos’ thrilling exposé of the Japanese fishing industry. By then, he had stepped away from GreeneStreet Films, the independent production company he started in 1996 with John Penotti. Chicago – Benjamin Bratt is a handsome man. That is undeniable when meeting the popular actor. But what he also expresses is a deep passion and intelligence, both for his work and the world around him. He was recently in Chicago promoting his new film, “La Mission,” directed by his brother Peter Bratt.
La Mission honors Peter and Benjamin’s San Francisco past, as they go back to their Mission District neighborhood to tell the story of Che Rivera (Benjamin), a macho neighborhood guy who is working hard to raise his son and forget the influences of his checkered past. The film has an authentic feel, different from the usual picture postcards associated with the City by the Bay.
Benjamin Bratt has been a working actor since the early 1990s. After getting his big break as Detective Rey Curtis in NBC’s “Law & Order,” he broke away to begin a film career,...

NEW YORK -- GreeneStreet Films is reteaming with Pinero writer-director Leon Ichaso on Monk, a biopic following jazz legend Thelonious Monk. The pianist's longtime manager, Harry Colomby -- whose film production credits include Breakdown and Mr. Mom -- will produce with GreeneStreet partners John Penotti and Fisher Stevens. GreeneStreet is eyeing an early 2004 start date. Growing up in New York, Monk began playing piano at age 5 and ultimately became one of the architects of bebop. In the early 1940s, the pianist played in the house band at venerable Harlem haunt Minton's, where he worked with fellow innovators Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, among others. Perceived as an eccentric for his avant-garde style and enigmatic demeanor, Monk went on to lead his own bands before finally being recognized as a seminal artist in the 1950s while leading a quartet featuring John Coltrane.

Earlier this year, he was selected to perform at both ABC's and CBS' diversity talent showcases and was offered the deal by ABC soon thereafter. The pact is set to run through January. Benitez's credits include the features Frida, Pinero and Before Night Falls and guest appearances on such series as CBS' Without a Trace, the WB Network's Angel and Lifetime's The Division. The make-up artist ex-wife of Julia Roberts' new husband Danny Moder has launched a scathing attack on the actress - labeling her "a husband stealer." Vera Steimberg, who helped transform Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps and Dr. Dolittle II, finalized her divorce to cameraman Danny in May after the Oscar-winner allegedly paid $400,000 to hurry the proceedings along. When Vera heard of Julia and Danny's Independence Day nuptials, she made no secret her disdain for the happy couple. Vera says, "I will never be able to forgive Julia, she's a husband stealer." Julia met Danny on the set of The Mexican during late 2000, when Julia was still dating Pinero star Benjamin Bratt and Danny was with Vera. Vera continues, "It won't last anyway. She will be looking for a new husband within a year. Danny has a roving eye, too, and he won't change. He cheated on me and he will cheat on her. Julia has been desperate to get him down the aisle and she's got her wish. I never wanted to lose him but I've given up now."...

Benjamin Bratt's secret marriage to Talisa Soto has come as a shock to everyone - including his pal Sandra Bullock. Bullock, who co-starred with the Latin hunk in the comedy Miss Congeniality, was attending the New York premiere of her new movie Murder By Numbers on Tuesday, when she was asked about the good news by a reporter for the E! network. She replied, "Wait a minute, what? What good news?" When she was able to compose herself, she continued, "Talisa is an amazing woman and he did it quietly and the right way. I had no idea - but I knew it was coming. I'm so happy because she's a good woman - and sexy too. He's an okay looking guy too." Pinero co-stars Bratt and Soto were married in a low-key ceremony in San Francisco, California - just as they had announced their engagement.

Following engagement reports, it turns out Julia Roberts' ex-boyfriend Benjamin Bratt has secretly married his Pinero co-star Talisa Soto. According to the star's publicist Ina Treciokas, the ceremony took place on Saturday in San Francisco, where Bratt grew up and owns a home. Treciokas says the pair wed "at an intimate family gathering, a day that perfectly celebrated their love and happiness". The actor had only just announced that he was engaged to Soto, which sources say was a deliberate move to throw suspicious minds off the scent of their impending nuptials. Bratt, 38, and Soto, 35, fell in love while co-starring in Pinero, the 2001 film about hard-living Puerto Rican poet-playwright Miguel Pinero. Bratt split with Roberts last year after a four year relationship, with some reports claiming Bratt had grown frustrated at the Oscar winning actress' refusal to marry.

Movie hunk Benjamin Bratt is eager to become a dad - and he thinks new girlfriend Talisa Soto could be the perfect mom. The actor, 38, who was previously engaged to Julia Roberts, admits his biological clock is "going boom, boom, boom". And his Piñero co-star Soto, a former Bond girl, could be the lucky mom. Bratt says, "I'm certainly a daddy in training and they say practice makes perfect. I'm ready yesterday. I come from a very large family and I take comfort from that kind of surrounding. It seems natural for me to have one myself. I see myself with my young warrior son on my shoulder. I can't wait for that feeling." Bratt's romance with Soto blossomed as they nursed each other through difficult break-ups, and he says it's wonderful to be in love with a long-time friend. He explains, "She's the most remarkable woman I've ever had the chance to come across. We've been friends for years and years. Within the industry actors in general tend to keep tabs on each other and in particular with Latino actors we're all aware of what each other is doing. Talisa and I were respectably with other people on the set of the film but through the course of filming our friendship blossomed into something more. She happened to simultaneously be going through the same difficult break-up process that I was and it wasn't until September when we were up at the Montreal Film Festival promoting the film that there was a little bit something else. I was like 'Wow!'."...
