- The animated short is loosely based on the story "The Devil and Daniel Webster."
The story starts with two mice named Dan and Jan. Both are folk song artists, whose latest gig at a small music club fails to impress the owner and draw a crowd. The owner fires them and declares that since everyone seems to prefer 'rock and roll' and 'disco dancing,' he's decided to turn his place into a Rock Club.
Dan and Jan then find themselves on the street with little money. Dan takes his guitar to a pawn shop to get money for food, leaving Jan alone in the woods. As she sits there, she laments how she'd give anything to be a rock star, feeling that if she was one, people would listen to her music.
Suddenly, the Earth shakes, and in a puff of smoke, a large, red-skinned creature appears, clad in a white suit. He presents Jan with his card, which claims him to be B.L. Zebub, the head of 'Devil May Care Productions.' B.L. then introduces his assistant, Wheez Weasel, who shows Jan a contract. However, the enormous amount of paperwork leaves Jan's head spinning, and she decides to sign without having thoroughly read the paperwork. After signing in her own blood, Jan is taken from the wooded area, just as Dan comes back.
Wheez is put in charge of managing Jan, and conjures a band up for her. Jan's musical career spans several different music styles, and soon, she has amassed fame and fortune, and is one of the most talked-about performers on stage. Dan continues to try and see her, but is foiled at every turn by Wheez.
At an outdoor amphitheater at the height of her fame, Jan performs several different genres of music, before the moon overhead is blotted out by a large bird, which happens to be B.L., come to collect her.
Jan rushes out of the amphitheater, with B.L. following her and changing shape depending on where she goes. When he finally catches her, he explains the clause in her contract that states that her soul now belongs to him, given that she has achieved superstardom. Jan then points out that this takes effect at midnight, and it isn't yet. B.L. is slightly upset, but allows Jan the time to say goodbye to her friends.
Jan wanders the woods unsure what to do, when she comes across Dan. Jan explains to him about her deal with the devil, and Dan vows to protect her. When B.L. arrives on the stroke of midnight, Dan demands to challenge Jan's contract. B.L. agrees to on the conditions that he can choose the judge and jury, and if Jan loses her case, he also gets Dan's soul as well.
Wheez presides over the trial, and calls up three souls from hell to serve as the jury. The jurors are all crooked persons who worked in the music industry. One is named 'Rat,' who owned a record company that cheated his singers. Another is 'Leech,' an agent who bled his singers dry. The last juror is 'Viper,' a singer who eventually lost her voice, and hates other singers.
B.L. presents the contents of the contract that Jan signed, and Dan tries to counter it, but his arguments are flimsy and without merit. Dan eventually tries to declare the trial as unfair, since a normal jury has 12 members and they only have 3. B.L. angrily claims this as a technicalitity, and multiplies the 3 jurors into 12.
Finally unsure what to do, Dan begins to sing a song, and Jan eventually joins in. Before long, his song has swayed those around him, and even the multiplied jurors have become entranced by it's melody. Dan declares that 'a song from the heart beats the devil everytime,' and Wheez, taken by the music as well, dismisses the case...much to the anger of B.L.
B.L. the declares that though they've beat him, he won't be so 'nice' in regards to future dealings. B.L. the disappears back to hell with the jurors and Wheez, leaving Dan and Jan free to lead their lives together.
