The best game ever!!
Cyrus_wd22 January 2002
This has to be the best computer game that i have ever played on any format. The storyline is brilliant and the gameplay is supurb. This game will take ages to complete and theres so much to do in order for the game to be completed. The only dissapointing thing about this game is that there is no fishing mini game like in ocarina of time but still the other mini games more then make up for this. This is the best game ever and i cant wait for the new Zelda game on the gamecube.

None too shabby at all.
capulet000026 March 2001
This is quite an engrossing game. It may be further testimony of its qualitly, that the only thing I could realy criticise it for would be its size. It's either too big a game or I'm getting too old for Zelda (nah - you're never too old) The "plot" would have to be one of the most unique around, but figuring out how the gameplay operates around the whole "3-day" concept is quite intriguing from the offset. I won't divulge any more for fear of spoiling it for any new players.

It's a refreshing addition to the N64 catalogue, with so many "samey" games out there at the moment. Definitely enough to keep any Zelda fan happy, and a must for your N64 collection. 8/10

I would give this game 5 stars
Cameronm-14 April 2001
Along with Ocarina of time, this is my favorite N64 game after buying it. Majora's Mask has tons of action, cool items (including masks), Swords that could chop my Dad's car in half and cool gameplay. Overall, this game has nothing wrong with it (unless it was the last of the zelda seiries) and it has tons of opportunities. Who would hate this game? If I were the critic that rates game I would give it 5 out of 5 stars.

The Classic series with a new twist!
Shadow-200026 May 2001
The Legend of Zelda has become a classic to every gamer in the world, especially to me. The original Nintendo game caused a major revolution on gameplay back in 1987 and never truly grew old. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link also provided some terrific moments despite being the worst chapter in the series. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past delivered the finest hours of gameplay ever seen, beating every other Zelda game. I never played the Game Boy games despite the positive reviews I've heard about Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. Zelda entered the 3D universe through the N64, delivering the classic in its most realistic inception, achieving perfection. Ocarina of Time was an unforgettable game that I still enjoy playing.

Now Majora's Mask has joined the Zelda series providing extra hours of fun. While this game follows the time period of Ocarina of Time (as well as that game's engine), Majora's Mask is actually different from any other Zelda game I've ever played.

At first, I was disappointed by Majora's Mask, but then I saw the beauty of this masterpiece. The story becomes more personal than the previous games. While the previous Zelda adventures dealt with Ganon, Princess Zelda, the Triforce and Hyrule's destiny, Majora's Mask strays from the common path and delivers a fresh new insight into the Zelda universe, proving that the story of the series isn't entirely dependent on the Zelda/Ganon/Triforce legend.

Technologically this game is a brilliant achievement! It builds on the previous game's engine. Graphics are definetely enhanced as well as some of the sounds. I was overjoyed to hear the traditional Zelda theme music which had disappeared in Ocarina of Time. This game makes good use of the Expansion Pak required to play it by reducing frame rate and adding depth to the 3D landscape. I was worried this game might disappoint me in that department. It has been five years since the N64 entered our houses. With the presence of both the Dreamcast and the Playstation 2 as well as future PC releases, Nintendo can't rely on the N64 much longer. It's reaching old age already just like the Super Nintendo had back in 1995. It's time to move on. Since this is the final Zelda produced for the N64 we'll have to wait a few more years for Nintendo's next release on the next platformer.

This game truly showed some new details previously unseen in Zelda games. This is the first Zelda with a time constraint. You have 3 days to save the world of Termina from a falling moon. You have to perform a lot of tasks within this time period and periodically go back in time using the ocarina. Collecting masks has become the prime motivator of the game's storyline. This game also features an unusually large number of pieces of heart Link is supposed to collect as compared to previous games. Playing Majora's Mask gives a different feeling compared to the other games and can be just as addictive as the others are.

This game can provide highly entertaining and challenging hours. Nintendo deserves an award for their incredible work on these games. They maintain a high level of quality unparallelled in the gaming industry!

Gaming for the great.
smashattack6 January 2002
Once again, The Legend of Zelda series puts Link in another huge, puzzling adventure with one dungeon after another.

However, this never gets repetitive. Majora's Mask could possibly be one of the best Zelda games ever, surpassed only by Link's Awakening. First of all, I've got to mention the immenseness of this game.

Although the game centers solely around just three days, there are so many things you, as Link, can do. Everything is timed perfectly. What you do one day will affect what happens the next for better or for worse. Everyone will always be at one certain place at one certain time. Nothing is random in this game, which makes it perfect for a time-traveling adventure. Everything is positioned according to time.

The graphics also jump a step higher than Ocarina of Time's, keeping out glitches that nearly killed Ocarina of Time.

The music is also really great. Koji Kondo put a lot more effort into this game than Ocarina of Time. I bought the soundtrack to Ocarina of Time, which was a waste of money since the music was really low. I got Majora's Mask's soundtrack for free with a subscription and expected it to be like Ocarina of Time's, but I was amazed at how movie-like some of it gets. For the record, I got the soundtrack before I got the game.

The game, although it only has four dungeons, is not short at all. A lot of time will be spent running through Clock Town as a Deku Scrub at the beginning.

Like all puzzle games, frustrating points pop up frequently, like trying to reach Snowhead Mountain, for example. This game could have been better if it was maybe a bit easier in some points.

If you get the chance, you should really try this game out. It is unlike any Zelda game you have ever seen. Also, check out the soundtrack if you ever find it.

unique story from the zelda series
jjwile1 June 2008
this game was a very unique story from the Zelda series. It has a more dark story... i mean this was one twisted game....but it satisfied me even though it was slacking on temples....but there many side quests. everything your could think of in game. even the name of the game is a pretty creative one...Majoras mask. the name itself sounds a little dark.. Definitely a recommendation for anyone who is a fan of the series and likes dark and twisted stories with some things that don't make any sense definitely a good recommendation... even though this game is like 8 years old now it is still worth the the age and still a good investment with a twisted story

One of the Greatest Games of All Time
rustydalek-3791126 September 2021
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time defined a generation of gaming, becoming perhaps the definitive fantasy adventure game. The story, soundtrack, and gameplay are phenomenal, and there's a reason the game is still highly regarded to this day. However, one of the most surprising things about Ocarina of Time is that its' sequel managed to be just as good, and perhaps even better.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is a very surreal experience, with a darker feel than it's predecessor, and a wildly unique story. I have yet to find another game in which the gameplay, story, atmosphere, and soundtrack all blend perfectly. The world feels alive in ways no other game I've played does. And when you consider the rushed develop time, it's amazing the game is as good as it is.

While debate can (and will) rage on as to the best games of all time, Majora's Mask earns a spot on that list, just as it's predecessor did. I freely admit that it is my personal favorite video game of all time, and it's well worth a look by any gamer.

The best zelda game ever
tiliko_3109 November 2014
In question of main story this has to be the shortest Zelda ever, but its s great, one of the best games i ever played, it has the disinguish game mechanic above al other zeldas: three days limit and npcs interaction, in this game you interact with npcs more than in any other zelda game, and is also the game that contains more quests in this saga. but what moves me more its storyline, its dark and interesting, and not so unpredictable, also the way termina looks and works, its by far a more interesting society than hyrule is ever going to be, there is a mayor and a monarchy!! 2 forms of government in the same country!! Anyway, the gameplay its recycled from oot but with vast improvement, this game its worthy of saying that it exploits completely the n64 capabilities, i cant wait till the 3ds remake of this game!

Majora's Mask
lucianomarzo9219 June 2013
I really loved the beginning of this game when I first played it. It's strange, dark, surreal, and compelling. Soon after, I discovered that you only have "three days" to complete the game. It's probably closer to three hours. This oddity is soon solved though, allowing you to save and refresh throughout milestones in the game. It is challening though, completing some of the dungeons in this amount of time. You can't dawdle through them like you can in the other games. I got stuck for a while in the very beginning of this game. I can't remember exactly why. I guess it just wasn't as straightforward as some of the other Zelda games.

Anyway, this game is very original, even for a Zelda game. There are a number of intriguing side quests, and another cool aspect of it is that you get to acquire and wear many different masks that give you new abilities, such as swimming and rolling about 50 miles an hour. Majora's Mask is not as good as Ocarina of Time, but how could it be? It came directly after. It's a solid, and worthwhile sequel, it just takes some getting used to. For one thing, there's only four dungeons, but they are all much harder than a lot of the dungeons in Ocarina of Time. I didn't especially like any of them.

If you were a fan of the musical aspects of Ocarina of Time, the fact that this game continues that trend, is a definite plus, especially considering it adds new instruments. This is one of a few ways that Majora's Mask is more diverse than its predecessor, another other being that you can play as multiple characters in this game.

Although I have not and probably never would play through all of it again, it's still a dark, atmospheric, and unforgettable game. I really like how this game incorporates apocalyptic aspects too, as they give the story a sense of urgency and dread, something pretty much all other Zelda games are not as good about doing.

The story is also much better and more interesting than those of the other Zelda games that diverged from the main Hyrule setting and structure. I recommend this game to anyone who has played and enjoyed Zelda games before. It's a bit experimental, and it's not one of the very best, but I would still rank it higher than most of the others, as it's actually one of the deepest, most immersing Zelda games I have ever played.

The overlooked masterpiece...
smg24228 December 2013
I loved The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, and thought it was a masterpiece when it came out. And yes, the Ocarina of Time is and deserves to be recognized as a wholly masterful video game classic. I'd heard people call it the 'Star Wars' of video games. I agree with that as well. But, with every 'Star Wars', there is an 'Empire Strikes Back'.

And this was it. Majora's Mask is not only as good as Ocarina of Time, it's better with a deeper, darker, more emotional storyline, fun masks, while keeping the already masterful gameplay engine from Ocarina of Time. The people saying that Ocarina of Time is better have probably never played it, or thought it was too hard due to its unique 3-day time limit mechanic.

Which brings me to its next plus point: the difficulty. Boy, was this game difficult. But, it was far from unplayable. Plus, isn't difficulty what makes Zelda games so awesome? I mean, look at the original Zelda game for the NES. That game's actually harder than this.

Overall, Majora's Mask is one of the best games in N64, as well as one of the greatest games in general. In my opinion, it's the single best Zelda game, beating Ocarina of Time by an inch. A masterpiece in every sense of the word. Oh, and it's also one that has some of the most iconically creepy moments in video game history. An example:-

"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" - Happy Mask Salesman.

Play this game NOW.

Apart from the others
Raleon2 June 2003
Anyone who has any knowledge of games at all will know that this is unlike the other Zelda games, which is good. It's still fun to play, challenging, and has a good storyline. It's also a break from the Triforce being used all the time. But some things in it are such a hassle - like the water cavern for example. (The name's probably wrong, it's been a long time since I've played it.) I remember always loving the game until I got to that point and then wanted to shut it off. The time limit didn't bother me. It was much more realistic and out of all in the Zelda series, the side quests are the best. The time limit has something to do with that.

Overall, it's still a good game and worth playing. Though, I tire of Link being 10 years old all the time now. It was best when he was between 17-21. I think this is when Zelda jumped the shark, if games can do that.

Amazing game
ZTVindel30 November 2018
It's the best thing we will ever get to Orcarina of Time. I feel the game is a bit more challenging then its predecessor. The story is a little unusual as well but still doesn't take that your playing Link in a similar game play style as in Orcarina.

Probably one of the only bad Legend of Zelda games.
gullcrap_slithroat22 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
i got the Legend of Zelda Promotional Disk in a competition, and the first game i played on the disk was Majora's mask, as it was the only one that i hadn't played. it was good to start with, until i realised that i had to play for about an hour until i could save, and i would go back in time anyway >:( It is a good game, but it just wasn't appealing to me. I thought it was bad, and the way that the game is basically timed is pretty annoying.

this is probably one of my least favourite LoZ games, but it is not as bad as the adventure of link, which i did not like one bit.

I Tried, Honest I Did, But...
zkonedog7 March 2017
When evaluating video games, I consider "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" to be the greatest adventure game I have ever played. As such, I was absolutely ecstatic when its sequel came out and I could once again resume Link's quest. Unfortunately, that excitement lasted for roughly 10-15 minutes...or until the gameplay actually started.

I realize that there is a large contingent of people who consider this game to be one of the best ever produced, but from the perspective of a casual gamer, it is largely a disappointment for the following reasons:

-The time element. One of the great things about "Ocarina" is that the gameplay was almost completely left up to the discretion of the player. One could go from temple to temple in short order, or you could wander around exploring a little bit, trying out some mini-games with no fears of "falling behind". With the time aspect of "Majora's Mask", however, you always feel pressured to complete certain tasks by a certain time. That sprawling, epic feel of "Ocarina" is completely gone.

-Saving. As players of the old NES system learned decades ago, there is nothing more frustrating than not being able to accurately save your progress within the gaming experience. Some of us are not hardcore gamers, and often life intercedes with an ability to find an owl statue or play an Ocarina song. This is a MAJOR flaw in this game that renders it painfully frustrating at many occasions. If a game is to appeal "to the masses", it must have a straightforward saving mechanism.

-Too many sidequests. While "Ocarina" struck the perfect balance between "major quests" and "side quests", "Majora" is positively riddled with mini-games, to the point of absolute overload. Again, whereas "Ocarina" was straightforward with room for adventuring, in "Majora" there are so many things going on that it produces a sensation of fear and overwhelming.

Overall, I feel as if "Majora's Mask" was made for the hardcore gamers instead of the casual fans of the series. Whether that was a "good" or "bad" choice is up for debate, of course, but in my experience it completely turned me off from the whole experience. I've tried to "get back into" this game on multiple occasions, but every time it just leaves me frustrated.

A solid rehash
Dignan_Tenenbaum22 May 2001
Yes, this was nothing more than a rehash of Ocarina, but it was a good one. For the first time ever, two Zelda games have, pretty much, the same play style. And, best of all, they got rid of all the annoying stuff from Ocarina of Time. Don't get me wrong, I loved that game. But the fairy was really annoying with her constant, "HEY !!!!" yelling. And the game was very slow in the beginning because it forced you to read every little explanation of how to play the game. Everything that was not perfect in the first one is perfect here.

Yes the game was a little shorter than the first, but there's so much more to explore in this one. It's focusing more on the people of the land you're in. Imagine all the things that happen over the course of three days. And you get to see it all! It's great. I loved following the mailman around on his routine. You get to save a couple's marriage. How cool is that?

Overall, it's a great game and very worthy of the Zelda name.

A terrific sequel
master_sullivan4 September 2018
Confession I hated this game growing up. I couldn't beat it and I never beat n64 version (I beat 3ds one in 2015). They knew Ocarina was unbeatable so they tried a doffent approach. Majora is harder and rough. But beautiful and rewarding. Side quest exploration is a must

More difficult than Ocarina of Time, but good.
fastandfuriostmp25 February 2022
The cool part of Majora's Mask is being able to travel through time and manipulate it to go slower or faster. However, this does put up pressure in completing the dungeons since you have to try and get one done before the third day ends. The first dungeon was just about the difficulty I'd expect, but the other ones are too hard for a casual player. Even harder than Ocarina of Time. Especially the last temple because you have to go in and out, flipping the temple upside down. If you missed, even just a key, you had to flip the temple and go all the way to the spot where it was...if you can even locate where that was before you flipped the temple. Usually in adventure games I'm okay in taking the time to figure out the dungeons and puzzles, but this game was clearly made for hardcore gamers. Despite how much I hate looking up walkthroughs, I had to use it a few times especially for the last temple.

I still gave a pretty good rating because I think this game is up there in being a classic and I enjoyed it as a kid despite never completing it until now. Its story is a good follow-up to Ocarina of time, and it has an amazing OST like the first game. The mask transformations are cool and neat to play as. I even enjoyed the side quests which has a bit of a story of its own.

Zelda does not play much of a part in this particular legend
Aaron13751 April 2014
Finally played and finished this particular Legend of Zelda game which is actually a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. I think there have been other direct sequels in the series, but this one is by far the most direct sequel as it takes place only a short time after the events of Ocarina of Time. I rated that one and this one an 8, as I did for Twilight Princess and Windwaker. All of these games are the more three dimensional Zelda games, unlike say, Link to the Past or the original. All the 3D games are good, but there always seems to be a flaw or something lacking that just makes the game good instead of great. In Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess it is the over abundance of overly complicated dungeons that last forever and at times it is almost a chore to complete one. In Windwaker, the dungeons were not long at all, but the main problem I had with it is a vast over world covered in water that took forever to sail. This one has a very interesting story, an interesting concept and not too many dungeons. Its downfall is the fact you must repeat so much stuff it becomes a bit repetitive and then the saving function in this one is also lacking. I played this one on a disc of classic Zelda games designed for the Gamecube and the transfer was a bit shoddy as the music messed up at times and the game froze on me a couple of times, but for the most part it was an okay transfer where they did not really improve anything. A good entry for the most part though, as it did boast a different type of story.

The story is the highlight as Link, searching for the very annoying Navi, finds his Ocarina taken from him and he is turned into a Deku scrub by a mischievous skull kid who is donning a strange mask, Majora's Mask. Link chases him to Terminus, a strange town where a festival will begin in three days and where the moon looks to be getting closer to the world. Link soon discovers this is no mirage as he confronts the skull kid atop Terminus' clock tower and regains his Ocarina. He is able to rewind time and the happy mask salesman wants Majora's mask back as it is evil and because of it the moon will fall upon Terminus and destroy its land. Link has three days to prevent this tragedy, but to do so, he will have to repeat the same three days several time as he must enter four temples and liberate the masks of giant monsters.

The game play is standard Zelda as far as combat, and those who've played Ocarina will know all about playing said instrument. The things that make this game unique are the fact that Gannon is not the enemy here, Zelda only has a brief flashback sequence and the fact you must keep repeating the same day over and over. Which is kind of cool and kind of a pain as having to defeat Ghot six or more times gets old, having to do the couple's mask quest and a few other things gets very repetitive. Part of me wishes that once you cleared a temple, that the land it encompassed would stay free from the evils of the beast inhabiting the temple. This Zelda is also very mini game oriented as there are only four temples, meaning there are only four complete hearts to find. So you have to find, win and trade to get a whole lot of heart pieces. Some of the games are a bit ridiculously hard as well, making you be near perfect to win said event.

So, all in all a unique and good Zelda game. However, like the other 3D Zelda games I have played through this one suffers from one too many flaws to be a really great one. Part of me wishes they would make a classic over the top view Zelda, like Link to the Past, and just make an insanely huge world to explore. They made a new game that is a sequel to Past, but it incorporates the same size world. I just know they could do an awesomely big game, making Hyrule a small kingdom in a vast over world where one takes a ship to some destinations. Still, the 3D games are fun and I think they could make one where it is nearly perfect and make a great game! They usually make them good though, and that is what they did here.

nnopee22 August 2022
In the year 2020 I got a Walmart gift card for 30 bucks. I wanted to get a Zelda game on my 3ds but I didn't know which. I traded the card to my mom for the money and I bought majoras mask 3d.

It's not the same game as the n64 version but they are practically the same don't @ me

If this game told me to send a planet destroying nuke to the core of our earth I would to it in a heartbeat. That's how much I love this game.

Amazing!
williemanga15012 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Good god, is this one... I can't do it justice! A lot of people consider Ocarina of Time the best in the Zelda franchise. But those people have overlooked Majora's Mask. Yes, I really liked OoT, and I've played the awesome 3D remake, but the one thing more deserving of a remake is THIS one! There's just so much content; All the power masks, the eerie atmosphere, the dreary music, the story... I just... I am always impressed with compelling stories in video games. After being brought to a parallel universe, a different time... I'm not sure; there are plenty of speculations. Anyway, after being brought to a land similar to Hyrule, heroic Link finds that the dark spirit Majora, possessing the mind of a skull kid (who actually looks like a scarecrow) to destroy Termina with a malevolent moon. Where does that sound familiar? Well actually, that's a pretty unique story for its time. The fact that it has a face does remind me of Voyage to the Moon. He have only 3 days to save this new land, so you must frequently turn back time. To save Termina, he must defeat four masked demons to restore the four giants, as without them, the swamp, mountain, ocean and canyon will suffer. Suffering... in a Nintendo game... it will dwell on you. On top of heartfelt story missions, there are plenty... PLENTY of optional side- quests I totally recommended doing, because they add depth and emotion to the story, despite not being required to beat the game. I could go on about the story, but the gameplay has to be mentioned too. Like I said, there are dozens of magic masks; some serve only one use, but some are a lot more useful. There are three masks that transform you into familiar sentient creatures. One mask can only be obtained after obtaining all other masks. It makes the final boss easier to beat. You know, the transformation masks actually remind me of a certain Jim Carrey movie. Other than the masks, this plays pretty much like OoT, but more fluent. Then there's the atmosphere... really, Nintendo? There are kids playing this! It's unsettling, it's dreary, it's wispy at times... and I freakin' loved it. The music is some of the best I've heard in the franchise, adding to the doomsday feel to the atmosphere. The graphics build upon the already perfect graphics of OoT, and seeing the remake of the said game, I would love to see a remastered version of Majora's Mask. To come to think of it, everything about this game is a great improvement over Ocarina of Time, which was practically perfect for its time. The gameplay is great, the atmosphere is fantastic and the story is the best in the franchise, just barely surpassing Twilight Princess, which has my second favorite story. That's why the game receives my rare full ten star rating.

Piece of art
Jerg3n19 May 2023
Majoras's mask isn't a videogame. It's weird, it's terrifying and it's heartbreaking. It takes the core aspects of Ocarina of Time and creates something barely recognizable as a sequel. Obviously it looks and feels the same for the most part, but the entire mood and central mechanics have been changed so much that this is an entirely different experience.

There is just a certain charm to literally every aspect of Majora's Mask. The oppressive atmosphere, the weird and wacky npc's and the uniquely thematic music. Even it's visuals, even if they're just a product of it's time, fit Majora's Mask on this specific level that ties it all together.

The compelling narrative deals with death and trauma in a way that no other piece of media really does. It is one of the few games to hit me this hard.

Majora's Mask is a piece of art.

Best Zelda game IMO
Angel_Meiru29 October 2004
Yes, you may laugh, but I actually LIKE, no wait, ADORE this Zelda game. A lot may have hated it, but to me, it was a breath of fresh air.

Like "Link's Awakening", Majora's mask is one of the few games that have very little or nothing to do with the Princess herself. Instead, it follows Child Link after his long quest in OoT. He searches for his friend (a bird faced scarecrow child), but as he does, he learns about a dark secret. His friend is possessed by a demonic mask and starts to wreak havoc. As Link pursues him (it?), he stumble upon the world that his possessed friend is causing trouble in. If that is not worse, a great conjunction will come, and the planet will collide with the moon in THREE days, so Link must go travel back and forth in time to save this world and his possessed friend before all is lost.

Between Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time both of them are awesome but Majora's Mask pull ahead, due to original plot and a lot of loose ends to tie up. The game is very non-linear, leaving you with a lot to see and do.

Thank goodness they released this on the "Zelda Collection" on the Ninendo Gamecube. I do not regret playing this at all.

BTW, the strange kid in the game is quite cute without Majora's MAsk ^_^

Worst Zelda Game
Billenium0051 July 2002
This is by far the worst Zelda game I've seen. Zelda is not even in it. Ganon isn't in it, and most of all, the Tri-force isn't even in it. The time line doesn't even fit in with the previous game. Link is riding in the forest with Epona, a horse he doesn't even get till he's an adult. Anyway, don't waste your money on this. I suggest you rent it first to see if you like it. I personally don't.

hint: think "Groundhog Day" and "The Mask"

Excellant game! This Zelda title takes Ocarina Of Time's engines further: Time never stops, even when you're in a dungeon, and the Three Day repeating aspect really makes this game quite differant from the other Zelda Games.

But, several classic favorites return to this game, such as the full classic Zelda theme, rehashed into more of an action peice then a march, and a lot of favorates from Ocarina of Time, such as the shooting gallery, and your trusty steed, Epona. you can use your bow and Arrow while riding her, and this time, the main feild is full of enemies. perfect for target practice. The music is not quite as involving as before, but it is still a pretty good game.
