A Forgotten Magazine Show
Theo Robertson12 August 2004
I was just flicking through the IMDb when I accidentally stumbled across this page for THE BEAT . I have to admit I wasn't to surprised that no one commentated on it because the show was broadcast on the ITV network at around 1 am in the morning !

I will give THE BEAT credit for trying since it would have been very easy for the producers to shrug their shoulders and say " We'll just put out any crap since no one will be watching it " and while I wasn't too keen on presenter Gary Crowley ( Never been keen on the " Mockney " type geezers ) we were treated to live performances from artists like Deacon Blue and One Dove that looked like it was specially produced for the show ala OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST . We'd also get exclusive videos of underrated artists like The The which was welcome for this viewer who wasn't subscribing to MTV

While being far from the greatest show ever made THE BEAT kept me company on many a cold lonely late night in the mid 1990s

Should be remembered as Gem for 90s music lovers

A am blessed to have stumbled upon The Beat, when it first started airing. Due to it's time slot which could be anywhere from 1-3am, I would set the VCR to record the show in full and 27 years later (it's 2020 as I type) I still have many full shows with Stereo sound. The show really did try to do its best with a very small budget, from this I recorded so many amazing interviews with Stone Temple Pilots, INXS and much more, exclusive performances from Doves, Kingmaker, Cure, Lloyd Cole, Grant Lee Buffalo, Blur, Nirvana, Pulp, Swerve Driver, Curve and hundreds more. This was the OGWT of the 90's. I will start adding broadcast dates and full show information as I digitise the tapes
