Homage in film can be a tricky proposition. Hew too close to the original, and you’re just making copies with no new toner; veer too far away and folks will wonder why you bothered. Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978) is that perfect beast then - a Jaws “rip-off” that bows to its source while winking at the audience, and yet still manages to be a wholly separate, wildly entertaining ride.
Released by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures in North America in early August (capitalizing on Jaws’ still undulating waves), Piranha was that rare New World phenomenon: It made some good coin ($16 million worldwide against a $600,000 budget) And was well received by critics. Steven Spielberg himself was so won over by Dante’s take and talent that it led to collaborations on Twilight Zone: The Movie, Gremlins, and other projects. Piranha proves that you can hug someone, slap a “Kick Me” sign on their back,...

The 7th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival, which runs this year on September 5-8 at the Factory Theatre, opens with a real bang when they will screen cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky’s latest cinematic odyssey, The Dance of Reality. This is Jodorowsky’s first film in over twenty years and is an imaginative and playful quasi-autobiography.
The rest of the four-day celebration is packed with more film oddities and excursions into surreal and transgressive territory. One particular highlight that is not to be missed is Don Swaynos’ incredibly crowd-pleasing comedy Pictures of Superheroes, about a slacker cleaning woman’s descent into an absurd world she can’t escape. Read the Underground Film Journal’s review of Pictures of Superheroes here.
Other twisted fiction films screening include Drew Tobias’s sick and twisted See You Next Tuesday, Cody Calahan’s apocalyptic Antisocial and Lloyd Kaufman’s highly-anticipated sequel Return to Nuke ‘Em High: Vol.

Bobby Deen, son of famed Southern chef Paula Deen, has recently returned from a tour promoting his new book, "From Mama's Table to Mine: Everybody's Favorite Comfort Foods at 350 Calories or Less."
In it, he takes some of the fat- and sugar-laden recipes his mother built her culinary career on and adapts them for the more health-conscious gourmet. It's similar to what he does on his Wednesday Cooking Channel show, "Not My Mama's Meals" (which also airs Sundays on Food Network).
While on the tour, people have been concerned that the effort could cause a mother-son rift.
"They want to know if my mom is mad at me," Deen tells Zap2it, "for what I'm doing to her recipes. I get that question a lot: 'Is your mom mad?' She's not. When I was a kid growing up, my mom was the one who taught me how to cook,...

Gabby Leibovich: “They didn’t have any great deals.”
Catch Of The Day founder Gabby Leibovich has said that rival online retail firm Click Frenzy “was not ready” for the volume of people who surged on to the site last night, causing it to crash.
Despite thousands of Australians missing out on the mega-sale – which offered up to 90% savings on products from 180 retailers – Leibovich said the collapse was “positive” for the retail industry, because it showed strong consumer demand.
He told Mumbrella: “First, I’d like to credit Click Frenzy for an amazing PR campaign. Everyone got behind it. But in the end the volumes of traffic were beyond their control. They just weren’t ready for it.”
Catch Of The Day sites, which include daily deals platform Scoopon, regularly crash, Leibovich said – “which is always positive”.

Uggie the dog wore diamonds worth £120,000 to a pre-Oscars party. The showbiz pooch was among the invitees to Harvey Weinstein's party at Soho House in Los Angeles on Saturday (25.02.12) and 'The Artist' star donned a Chopard collar for the occasion. Uggie was accompanied by three bodyguards and other guests were banned from being in the lift with him. However, despite his doggy diva demands, Uggie was a big hit with other revelers and posed for pictures with a host of stars, including Katy Perry. A source said: 'Lots of lady stars were gushing over him and bent down to stroke him.' Alongside her picture, Katy tweeted: 'Catch of the day! Uggie from 'The Artist' (not the guy in...
