When Billy Crystal introduced Annette Bening, he said she was would be "coming soon as none other than Catwoman in Batman II". A month later Bening had to back out of Batman Returns (1992) due to her pregnancy. The part went to Michelle Pfeiffer instead.
This was the only time that Meryl Streep was nominated that she didn't attend the ceremony on the orders of her obstetrician. Her baby, Louisa Jacobson Gummer, was born June 12.

During the presentation of the short film awards, a protester barged into the auditorium shouting but was forced out by security. The home audience never saw or heard any of the incident and the only indication is that presenter Martin Short very briefly looked over in that direction.
Due to the events surrounding the Persian Gulf War, which had just called a cease fire, security was tight at the Shrine Auditorium and everyone was searched and had to go through a metal detector. The only exception was Bob Hope because Bob Verdan, an Academy spokesman, said "He's like the American flag. Are you going to make him go through a metal detector?"
