- [first lines]
- Estragon: [struggles to remove his boot and fails] Nothing to be done.
- Vladimir: I'm beginning to come round to that opinion. All my life I've tried to put it from me, saying Vladimir, be reasonable, you haven't yet tried everything. And I resumed the struggle.
- [to Estragon]
- Vladimir: So there you are again.
- Estragon: Am I?
- Vladimir: I'm glad to see you back. I thought you were gone forever.
- Estragon: Me too.
- Vladimir: Together again at last! We'll have to celebrate this. But how? Get up till I embrace you.
- Estragon: Not now, not now.
- Vladimir: May one inquire where His Highness spent the night?
- Estragon: In a ditch.
- Vladimir: A ditch! Where?
- Estragon: Over there.
- Vladimir: And they didn't beat you?
- Estragon: Beat me? Certainly they beat me.
- Vladimir: The same lot as usual?
- Estragon: The same? I don't know.
- Vladimir: When I think of it all these years but for me... where would you be? You'd be nothing more than a little heap of bones at the present minute, no doubt about it.
- Estragon: And what of it?
- Vladimir: It's too much for one man.
- Vladimir: Don't go yet.
- Pozzo: I'm going.
- Vladimir: What do you do when you fall far from help?
- Pozzo: We wait till we can get up. Then we go on. On!
- Vladimir: Before you go tell him to sing.
- Pozzo: Who?
- Vladimir: Lucky.
- Pozzo: To sing?
- Vladimir: Yes. Or to think. Or to recite.
- Pozzo: But he is dumb.
- Vladimir: Dumb!
- Pozzo: Dumb. He can't even groan.
- Vladimir: Dumb! Since when?
- Pozzo: Have you not done tormenting me with your accursed time! It's abominable! When! When! One day, is that not enough for you, one day he went dumb, one day I went blind, one day we'll go deaf, one day we were born, one day we shall die, the same day, the same second, is that not enough for you? They give birth astride of a grave, the light gleams an instant, then it's night once more.
- Pozzo: The more people I meet the happier I become. From the meanest creature one departs wiser, richer, more conscious of one's blessings.
- Pozzo: The tears of the world are a constant quantity. For each one who begins to weep, somewhere else another stops. The same is true of the laugh.
- Estragon: Yes, now I remember, yesterday evening we spent blathering about nothing in particular. That's been going on now for half a century.
- Vladimir: It is true that when with folded arms we weigh the pros and cons... we are no less a credit to our species. The tiger bounds to the help of his congeners without the least reflection,..or else he slinks away into the depths of the thickets. But that is not the question. What are we doing here, that is the question. And we are blessed in this, that we happen to know the answer. Yes, in this immense confusion one thing alone is clear. We are waiting for Godot to come...
- Vladimir: In an instant all will vanish... and we'll be alone once more, in the midst of nothingness!
- Pozzo: One day we'll go deaf, one day we were born, one day we shall die,..the same day,..the same second, is that not enough for you? They give birth astride of a grave... the light gleams an instant... then it's night once more.
