Mumbai, April 24: Critically acclaimed actress-director Nandita Das, who took a sabbatical to take care of her baby, is set to be back with a bang - but says she would rather stay away from mainstream cinema.
"I am very happy doing the kind of films that I do. Of course even that's a gamble, not all the films turn the way it is imagined. It's strange, even after 15 years people keep asking me why I don't do commercial films," Nandita said here.
Nandita has explored distinctive characters in her movies like "Fire", "Earth", "Bawandar", "Aks" and "I Am". Nevertheless, she maintains that she has nothing against mainstream commercial.

April 26, 2010:On the eve of the release of his film Apartment, Jag Mundhra tells Jyothi Venkatesh at his office in Mumbai over cappuccino that he has every right to take away his name from the film as the director if the producer takes away his authority
Though you had made your debut almost three decades ago with Suraag, it is surprising that Apartment is only your fifth film in Hindi!
Apartment is my fifth in Hindi till date. Chase, my sixth film, is all set for release next week. I have earlier made films like Suraag, Kamla, Vishkanya, and Bawandar. Though my last releases in English in India before.

Herman Knippenberg, the Dutch diplomat who investigated Charles Sobhraj's case, has been roped in as consultant for the Sanjay Dutt bio-pic apparently based on Sobhraj's life. However, no one involved with the Sanjay Dutt's project Charles & I is talking about Sobhraj any more. According to people close to the project, Sanjay Dutt who plays the lead has been told not to speak about the character any more. Says a source, "From the moment the director Prawaal Raman narrated the script to Sanjay he has been charged. The actor has taken charge of the project, so much so that when the original producers pulled out, Dutt personally took on the responsibility for getting immediate replacement producers. However, the excitable actor has been asked not to mention Sobhraj anywhere." It looks like Faroukh Dhondy's novel The Bikini Murders is not the only supposedly-biographical target that the controversial convict Charles Sobhraj has chosen for legal recourse.

Films based on real-life characters always seem to get into trouble. Whether it was the real life Bandit Queen who wanted to be compensated by Shekhar Kapoor or Bhanwari Devi who created a Bawandar in Jagmohan Mundhra's life, biographical films almost always court trouble in this country. Quick on the heels of Charles Sobhraj threatening to sue author Farrukh Dhondy for borrowing from his life, Utv and director Dibakar Banerjee have clammed shut on the origins of the car-stealing protagonist Abhay Deol in Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! Apparently, the character is inspired by the life and crimes of Devender Singh alias Bunty who's currently in jail for stealing posh cars from the elite circles of Delhi. Doing a complete volte face on the earlier stance that the producers have received a letter from the real-life crime-dude asking for monetary compensation for creative cannibalization, Utv's Siddharth Roy-Kapoor says, "We've received...
