Filmmaker Kenneth Karlstadt has conjured a chaotic coming of age story, “Kids In Crime,” for Norway’s TV2. The writer-director grew the project out from his well received short, “The Hunger,” into eight short episodes.
It’s a format hoped to attract younger audiences aged 16-22, who are surrounded by many alternative forms of entertainment through social media, games, and streamers. It is unclear how well this strategy worked, but the show proved to be one of 2022’s most successful shows for TV2, according to Brede Havland, producer for Einar Film Drama. It has also been nominated for the Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize 2023.
An impactful new offering, “Kids In Crime” presents Karlstadt’s nose for rebellious but tight narratives and a set of teenage characters hoping to live with the volume turned high. Set in 2001, the show follows the three teenagers Tommy, Pål and Monica, played by newcomers Kristian Repshus,...

Cameron Crowe's 2000 film "Almost Famous" was a semi-autobiographical nostalgia piece about a 15-year-old aspiring writer named William (Patrick Fugit) who lands a gig for Rolling Stone following the hip new band Stillwater on their most recent 1973 tour. This is based on Crowe's own experience writing for Rolling Stone as a teen, following the Allman Brothers Band on tour. Although highly fictionalized, "Almost Famous" captures a very palpable sense of teen wonderment one experiences in entering a previously verboten adult world. Everyone is freewheeling and cool. Sex is all around. Much of the drama of "Almost Famous" stems from the young William's eventual realization that he is a very, very uncool teen journalist, and not the band's friend at all. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the real-life rock critic Lester Bangs.
Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Crowe managed to find a near-miraculous balance of honest teen emotions and ultra-hip adherence to a particular music scene.

Swedish director Jonas Akerlund’s has a knack for merging music and visuals, having spent the first few decades of his career making videos for artists including Madonna, Beyonce, Ozzy Osbourne and Rammstein.
In 2002 he made his directorial feature debut with “Spun,” a dark comedy featuring Jason Schwartzman and Mena Suvari, and has since continued to dabble in both music and feature films, occasionally combing the two with projects such as 2018’s “Lords of Chaos,” a horror film about Norway’s early 1990s black metal scene. He was also set to direct “Midas Man,” a biopic of The Beatles’ legendary manager Brian Epstein, before parting ways with the production last winter.
Akerlund’s latest project, Netflix limited series “Clark,” is not music-themed, although it’s very much informed by the music and culture of the ‘70s. The show tells the story of notorious Swedish criminal Clark Olofsson (played by “It...

"This f&!*ing society has never given me an honest chance!" Netflix has revealed the full-length trailer for the crime comedy series Clark, made by Swedish filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund. Clark tells the story of the Swedish criminal who gave rise to the idea of "The Stockholm Syndrome" during a failed bank robbery in Stockholm in the 70s. Clark Olofsson has been referred to as a "celebrity gangster", and over his many decades has managed to escape prisons and commit robberies all over Europe. Åkerlund explains: "Clark is the story about the most politically incorrect man, who lived the most politically incorrect life. These are the kinds of stories I always look for. It’s an ultra-violent, witty, emotional, real and surreal biography to put a face to the name 'Stockholm Syndrome', but it isn’t just about the Norrmalmstorg Robbery. It’s about his whole life and what made him who he is,...

Mena Suvari became a certified Hollywood star with her breakout work in “American Beauty” and “American Pie.”
But as glamorous as her life may have appeared, Suvari was keeping a lot of secrets. Dark secrets.
Now, she’s telling them all in her new memoir, “The Great Peace.”
Suvari was raped when she was just 12 years old by a friend of one her brothers. What followed were years of sexual trauma and substance abuse. She endured two marriages that ended in divorce. But through it all, she continued working, presenting herself as a happy starlet without a worry in the world.
Her first taste of fame came while shooting 2001’s “Sugar & Spice.” A fan recognized her from “American Pie” and asked for an autograph. “I remember thinking, ‘Why? Who am I?’ because I felt worthless. I was like, ‘Why do you want my autograph?’” Suvari recalls on this week...

Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan shared a new image related to his upcoming part in Hulu’s limited series Pam & Tommy. In it Stan, who plays Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee opposite James’ Pamela Anderson, poses in character wearing just shorts, shoes and an apron emblazoned with the words “Kiss the Cook,” with the hashtag “Sunday” appended.
The photo is similar to many shirtless, in character poses the actor has posted in recent weeks, but his one seemed a bit more appropriate to a BBQ-filled holiday weekend.

A post shared by Sebastian Stan (@imsebastianstan)
The post was liked by co-star Seth Rogen as well as Drake Doremus — who directed Stan in Endings — Beginnings and producer Simon Kinberg.
Hulu previously released several photos of Stan and co-star Lily James that recalled famous images of Lee and Anderson. You can see those here.

It’s safe to assume that Nico Walker knew his life story could make for a good movie in the right hands. By the time he finished up his prison sentence in Ashland, Kentucky, he was waiting for the publication of the semi-autobiographical novel he’d written from jail about the wayward journey that had brought him there in the first place. The book was called “Cherry,” and the bestseller’s instant success would earn enough to afford its 33-year-old author — a former Iraq War Army medic, opioid addict, and mild-mannered bank robber in that order — a second chance to be all that he could be, even before directors Anthony and Joe Russo paid him $1 million dollars for the film rights and turned it into their first post-“Avengers: Endgame” production. Suffering through the Russo brothers’ adaptation of Walker’s life story, there’s no question who got the better end of that deal.

Exclusive: Discovery’s female-skewing UK network Quest Red has commissioned Spun Gold to make a plus-sized vacation format that has more than a faint echo of ITV’s The 18-30 Stone Holiday.
Spun Gold made The 18-30 Stone Holiday documentary for ITV in 2017, sending a group of Brits to a specialist plus-sized resort in the Bahamas, where they enjoyed a luxury break while grappling with their body image.
Now, the production company behind the International Emmy-winning The Real Full Monty: Ladies Night, has headed back to the Caribbean for Quest Red’s eight-part My Plus Sized Holiday (working title).
Deadline understands that the series will follow a group of six overweight holidaymakers as they enjoy the surroundings of a resort that is specially designed for their needs, complete with reinforced toilets and beds.
The uplifting format celebrates the participants’ plus-sized bodies. It wrapped filming in Antigua recently and is now in post-production.

Craving stylish action? If “John Wick” is a meaty steak, full of flavor that more than satisfies hunger pangs and “Crank” is cotton candy, sweet, tasty, but not very substantial, then Netflix‘s new action-thriller, “Polar,” directed by Jonas Åkerlund (“Spun“) and heavily indebted to both films, is what happens when you take a steak, cotton candy, and a healthy dose of your nearest narcotic and shove it all into a blender.

Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund may be most celebrated for his extensive music video and concert film output, collaborating with everyone from Madonna to Metallica, Roxette to Rammstein, the Smashing Pumpkins to the Prodigy. His movies, however, brim with an equally intense aesthetic and off-the-cuff kineticism: Spun, Åkerlund's delirious 2002 debut feature, is now widely considered a pinnacle of drug-culture–cinema epics; Small Apartments, his 2012 movie about an outsider searching for his place in the world, would probably attain similar cult status if only it'd reached a larger audience. (In between, he also made the crime-thriller Horsemen,...

Deadline reports that frequently photographed person and actually really good dance-popper Sky Ferreira has joined Lords Of Chaos, an adaptation of Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind’s non-fiction account of Norway’s early ‘90s black metal scene, co-produced by Vice films. The project, which was initially announced last year, will reportedly focus on the 1993 murder of Mayhem guitarist Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth at the hands of Varg Vikernes, better known as the black metal one-man band Burzum.
The film will be directed by music video veteran Jonas Åkerlund, who, once upon a time, was the original drummer for the pioneering Swedish first-wave black metal band Bathory. (He also directed Spun, which isn’t very good, but you can’t have everything.) Jack Kilmer and Brooklyn’s Emory Cohen have also recently joined the cast, which includes Rory Culkin. In a year that saw the release of some very dark animated Batman films geared toward the older crowd, namely Bad Blood and The Killing Joke (both of which I enjoyed immensely), Batman Unlimited: Mechs vs. Mutants aims to satisfy kids. After all, every age group needs a Caped Crusader they can root for. But the real issue is, does it do it well?
Long before Warner Bros. brought us PG-13 and even R-rated animated Batman offerings, they succeeded at entertaining all age groups with TV shows such as Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Each of those were able to tell sophisticated stories while not overstepping the boundaries of standards and practices.

"I woke up one day and realized I hated acting and that I’d always hated it. Imagine, it's predominantly men whose scripts get done so it was mostly a male voice coming out of my mouth for fifteen years," McGowan told Nowness, which premiered the video Monday. "I believe in civil disruption. I also think it’s important for bodies to be represented in a non-sexual manner, especially women’s bodies." The otherworldly, but thought-provoking clip comes courtesy of Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, "Telephone"); the song will be available Tuesday. (Warning: Music video is Nsfw due to nudity.)...

Exclusive: Eurythmics co-creator and record producer Dave Stewart is moving forward on Zombie Broadway, a feature adaptation of his 2008 Virgin Comics graphic novel about an undead uprising on the Great White Way. Along with The Butler producers Pam Williams and David Jacobson, Stewart has tapped Cole Haddon (NBC’s Dracula) to script and Spun helmer Jonas Akerlund to direct the horror musical in which a group of Broadway performers battle zombies with the power of showtunes. Start-up financing firm First Artist Ventures secured early development financing for the project and producers are taking the script to financiers and talent with the aim of filming in 2015.
Stewart created the original Zombie Broadway graphic novel with David Harris and Christine Schenley. James Franco talks a lot about artistic integrity and vision. But there are at least a few people who are publicly calling Bs on the actor: The producers he slammed for making a sequel to Spring Breakers without his consent.
Let’s rewind: Earlier this month, production company Wild Bunch announced it was working with Muse Productions, which was behind the first film, on Spring Breakers: The Second Coming. “It’s not a direct sequel, although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” said Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval. About a week ago, it was reported that Wild Bunch production company is working on a sequel to "Spring Breakers," a 2013 film that starred James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine. It was reported that "Spring Breaker 2" will have the characters go to war with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them. And while the cast wasn't announced, the press release stated that some of the original cast members will reprise their roles. Franco has now reacted to the announcement, revealing that he's pissed that the sequel is being made without Harmony Korine, the writer and director of the original. "F*ck that ['Spring Breakers 2'] Bs," wrote the actor. "They're doing it without Harmony'S Consent. Sounds Lame As A Mutha!" The sequel will be directed by Jonas Akerlund (Spun, Horsemen, Beyonce's "Telephone" music video) from a script by Irvine Welsh, the author of "Trainspotting.

Last week we got the news Jonas Akerlund (Spun) was planning on directing Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, an unofficial sequel to Harmony Korine's dubsteppin' original with a screenplay from Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting). I didn't report on it because it sounds terrible. The original cast isn't returning and the story follows "the Spring Breakers doing battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them." The key, of course, is Korine isn't involved and James Franco, who starring in the original as Alien has now weighed in with his thoughts with the following Instagram video (via The Playlist) accompanied with the following comment, "Alien In Rehab! And Btw F*** that SBers 2 Bs, they're doing it without Harmony's Consent. Sounds Lame As A Mutha!" Lookin' good James! One of the strangest films of last year has to be "Spring Breakers," starring James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine. The movie wasn't big on plot. Instead, it was filled with wacky dialogue and music video-style elements. "Spring Breakers" went on to gross $31.7 million worldwide on a budget of $5 million. Even though it's not considered a massive hit, Wild Bunch production company has now announced that it's developing a sequel. Director/writer Harmony Korine is not returning. He'll be replaced by helmer Jonas Akerlund (Spun, Horsemen, Beyonce's "Telephone" music video), who'll direct from a script by Irvine Welsh, the author of "Trainspotting." The plot has also been revealed. Instead of fighting drug dealers, the characters will go to war with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them. Some of the cast will reprise their roles, but it sounds like the main cast will not return.

Spring break really is foreverrrr — as evidenced by the news that there’s going to be a sequel to Harmony Korine’s 2012 satire about the latest MTV generation all grown up. Last year, star James Franco told press, “I don’t think Harmony really wants do to Spring Breakers 2. He’s not the one who’s been talking about it.” Now comes word that Spring Breakers: The Second Coming (whaaat?) is going to be up for grabs at this year’s Cannes Film Festival — and the film already has a team of people lined up and ready to work on it. Jonas Åkerlund (Spun, Small Apartments) will tackle the role of director, while Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Filth) will script the project. We don’t know much...

Sometimes little delicious little nuggets of news are hidden in dry industry press releases, which is exactly the case with "Spring Breakers 2." Talk about burying the lede!

Heads will turn. Wild Bunch just announced their slate of films in the works for the Cannes marketplace, a portion of the Cannes Film Festival where producers, distributors and investors can take a peek at potential projects. Wild Bunch is packing new intense pieces including Paul Verhoeven's revenge thriller, a "Maniac Cop" remake, Gaspar Noe's latest, and the "Spring Breakers" sort-of sequel. We'll break it down for you: "Spring Breakers 2: The Second Coming": It sounds like a horror movie, but let's be honest: you really don't know what to expect. Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval told ScreenDaily, "It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original," plus a mix of old and new cast members. Production company Wild Bunch has announced plans for Spring Breakers 2 and a Maniac Cop remake.
Of the companies announcing their slates ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, Wild Bunch is the first to announce something of a surprise. For it's announced a rather unexpected sequel: Spring Breakers: The Second Coming.
Harmony Korine, who wrote and directed the first movie, won't be back for the second. Instead, Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) will write the script and Jonas Ackerlund will direct. Ackerlund is most famed for his music video work including, er, The Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up, but has directed features such as Spun, Small Apartments and the rather good Horsemen.
The film will see the bikini-clad criminals going up against a bunch of extreme militant Christians who attempt to convert them. It certainly sounds interesting.

Production company Wild Bunch has announced plans for a sequel to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. The follow-up will form part of the company’s upcoming slate at Cannes.
From the brief synopsis offered up, this time around the Breakers in question will do “battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.” Blimey. Sounds as mad as the first flick. Expect bikini-clad teens wielding an arsenal of weapons.
Tentatively titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, intentions are to generate interest prior to selling the film at the prestigious festival this month. And by the looks of the talent attached, they should have no problem there. Set to direct is Spun and Small Apartments director Jonas Akerlund, confirming star James Franco’s comments that original director Korine had no interest in revisiting the material.

Exclusive: Wild Bunch to launch new films from Verhoeven, Noé, Kechiche as well as Spring Breakers 2, Maniac Cop remake and market premiere Welcome to New York.

There are really two different Cannes Film Festivals. And then there's the Cannes marketplace, where producers, distributors, investors and more all get the next wave of movies in front of people who can sign checks and make deals. And today, production company Wild Bunch has revealed the movies they'll be bringing to wheel and deal, and there's some surprising stuff. Easily the one that will get folks talking the most is a sequel (of sorts) to Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers." Cheap cash in? Iggy Azalea paid tribute to cult teen classic Clueless in her recent music video for 'Fancy'.
The Australian rapper appears as Alicia Silverstone's iconic character Cher in the video, which was released online last week.
As stars continue to be inspired by the movie almost 20 years on, we take a fond look back at the cast and what they went on to do after Clueless:
Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz)
Alicia Silverstone played seemingly shallow socialite Cher - famously branded "a virgin who can't drive" and "hymenally challenged" - in the high-school adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma.
Prior to Clueless, Silverstone's credits included ABC comedy-drama The Wonder Years and a number of Aerosmith videos. The film propelled her to further fame, and she went on to star in Joel Schumacher's 1997 movie Batman & Robin, crime-comedy Excess Baggage (1997) with Benicio Del Toro and Christopher Walken, and romantic drama Blast from the Past (1999) opposite Brendan Fraser.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...
