It's an excellent country-music comedy short film starring The Derailers
The Derailers star in this short film that is about some strangers (a country-western band) who come to town to play a concert, basically playing themselves, who are in the right place at the right time. The film is a extended version of the same story told in the Derailers' music video for their hit single "The Right Place", and the film features music from the album "Full Western Dress". The band goes to a diner to get some coffee, beginning a chain of events that winds up with them inadvertently foiling an attempted jewelry heist. Tony Villanueva, who is no longer a part of The Derailers, gave a fine performance with expressive eyebrows, as was his signature. Brian S. Hofeldt, frontman for The Derailers, grew up with his father's love of everything Beatles, and their music was an inspiration to him. This film is sort of an homage to Beatles film-making, with the band starring as themselves getting into various forms of mischief. The Beatles' influence can be felt in The Derailers' soundtrack to The Right Place, with its solid songwriting & lyrics, as well as its catchy and eminently danceable tunes. There is no way to simply describe the Derailers' style of music; it's like a fusion of country, swing, and Beatles-era pop. Shades of the Beach Boys, Elvis, Merle Haggard, and Charlie Rich can also be heard, but the band has a way of putting their own unique stamp on the music, making it somehow fresh and relevant. This is not your cookie-cutter country music. In fact, Hofeldt's musical roots come from Portland, where he played in the same scene with bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden in the late 80's before moving to Texas with Villanueva to form The Derailers. If you like music that will remind you of the oldie-but-goodies while still inspiring with a modern twang, try The Derailers on for size. Hofeldt and The Derailers also perform in a full-length feature film, Don't Look Back, starring Eric Stoltz. By the way, the woman who plays the would-be thief, Amy Neeley, was Miss Tennessee 1999; she is now Amy Adkins, the wife of The Derailers bassist Ed Adkins...yes, they met during filming, and they lived happily ever after!
