Because of the premise of the movie, it can be seen as either a remake of The Lathe of Heaven (1980), or its sequel.
Orr's (Lukas Haas') rain jacket was inspired by the aliens from The Lathe of Heaven (1980).
In the end, Dr. Haber (James Caan) does cure Orr (Lukas Haas). This is represented by his jellyfish, representing normality, now swimming with a large school of jellyfish. Also, in the final scene, Mannie (David Strathairn), who has always taken care of Orr throughout all of the changes, does not recognize him.
The movie has two love stories, George Orr (Lukas Haas) and Heather Lelache (Lisa Bonet), and also Dr. Haber (James Caan) and Penny (Sheila McCarthy). After Orr says you can't dream someone away if you love them, Haber and Penny are seen. Later, after Haber changes everything, he and Penny are still together now as doctor and patient.
