Farm Life is Hard Indeed!
paloma5413 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Whenever it's time to rate a long-running series, it's difficult to know what to do. Having watched the entire 8 season program, I have to admit some of the episodes were wonderful, the overall concept is excellent, but there is also the tendency to wear out, due to frequent cast withdrawals, new cast members, and loss of inspiration for new material. These tendencies are common to many if not most series.

There's a peculiar phenomenon which I have termed "Downton Abbey Syndrome", that features a long drawn out romance between two leads which creates an agreeable state of suspense (at least for female viewers) as to when will these two actually get together. When this finally happens, there are a few happy moments of wedded life, then a complete tragedy which takes the life of one of the young newlyweds. Does the audience feel let down and completely cheated? you bet! Unfortunately for this series, Downton Abbey Syndrom occurs not once but several times. While I sympathize with the writers who have to pick up the pieces when cast members leave, I get pretty darn frustrated with a story that is so terribly gutted.

What I found most gripping about this series was actually the many details about the daily life and work of sheep & cattle ranching. I've no idea how realistic the story is, but the constant work of securing fences, watching out for feed issues such as watching out for potentially poisonous pasture plants, ensuring health for the animals, treating disease, assisting in birthing, etc, were new to me and interesting. If it is really this difficult, I'm surprised these animals haven't become extinct! The show, while lauding the efforts of those who farm, doesn't do a lot of romanticising about it either.

I enjoyed many of the characters, especially Claire, Tess, Nick, Becky, Grace, Regan, and Dave Brewer, the vet. Stevie's character was a bit tiresome for me, possibly due to the quirky speech patterns and body gestures of the actress playing her. The development of Becky and Grace was the most interesting for me, along with the unusual relationship between Phil and Moira. I was less impressed with the way Dave Brewer's character was written. The original character portrayed a rather unusual but refreshing local vet, but he is eventually written out as well, and the further development of that story line struck me as particularly weak. Grace's character is very nuanced and I was disappointed that we don't get to see her finally enabled to be successful in love. In fact, I thought there was much more chemistry between her and Marcus than there was between Marcus and Ingrid.

And finally, what increasingly ruined the last few seasons for me was the constant stream of disasters, ie fires, car accidents, chronic cattle theft, failed livestock sales, drought, disease, etc. There was just so much misery that befell the Drovers Run - Killarney crew that the show ultimately loses its credibility.

So my rating is just a pale average, due to some episodes being rated probably 9, while others might have earned a 4 or 5. It's mostly a show which I believe will appeal to women rather than men. Whether it's worth the time involved or not, is a matter of how much time you have on hand, and your individual taste.

Fantastic Aussie Drama!
tequilatamm3 July 2002
I grew up in North America and have been living in Sydney, Australia for 8 years.

Far too much Australian TV is imported from the U.S., but this series is a prime example of why Australia should make (and export for that matter) its own shows.

This is the finest Aussie Drama to come out of Australia since the TV mini teledrama Fire! which was around perhaps 6 or 7 years ago when I was first in the country.

The story lines are not ridiculous as they can sometimes be in US dramas, and the characters are profiled in-depth...you feel as though they are real people....and real Aussie country people at that.

In my opinion, this series should be marketed to the US to show REAL Aussie country life instead of that stupid fake crocodile hunter stuff!

Bravo for the makers of McLeod's Daughters. I give it a 10 and recommend it as prime viewing to everyone! I only hope they start making more as good as this, here in Oz!

One of my favourites

I remember watching with with my mum when I was about 9 years old in Canada. I am now 21 relocated in Queensland Australia. This is truly a classic. True Aussie drama, with great acting and entertaining storyline's. Clean message and episodes. Nothing over complicated and too hard to understand. It's sucks it had to end but I am so glad you can still find this series on over streaming platforms. One of the best!

It was almost a perfect show up until...
pegschr10 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This 9star rating is only for the first 4 seasons. This show was nearly perfect until the character Tess McLeod was killed off...but then we found it was still worth watching until the last episode of season 4 when Sally showed up pregnant with Nicks baby and ruined our LOOOOONG awaited happy ever after with Tess and Nick. We all stopped watching after that show. The truth is that sadly we live in a very volatile world today with to much stress and misery, we want our show to take us away from that even for a few hours, we need the "happy ever afters" where the good guys win and not so much tragedy and heartbreak that it rivals real life. If I want tragedy and heart break and sorrow I have real life for that, we watch tv to escape real life. I was over the moon exited when I seen that there were a whole 8 wonderful long seasons of a show about the outback, horses and ranching, I thought I was dreaming, but it only lasted for us through season 4. Not enough good guy/people wins.

McLoed's Daughters Is Unique & Wonderfully Done
hmlnkfam10 November 2005
Thanks to the WE television network, Americans have been able to fall in love with this well made and unique dramatic television series. The relationship that grows between the step sisters Tess and Claire after their father dies is realistic and wonderful to watch.

Then there's the addition of Becky the neighborhood "bad girl" who comes from a truly horrible home and is raped by her employer, a "respected" shop owner... She escapes to Dovers Run and works beside the sisters, Meg the house keeper, cook, and friend of Claire, and Meg's flighty spoiled daughter Jodi.

I actually found some parts of this series extremely difficult to watch because it portrays life on a ranch so realistically... cattle dieing from disease or poisoning. Sheep bought cheap because they are so skinny and bedraggled many die along the road when they are forced to walk back to the ranch after the livestock truck breaks down, and the most heart wrenching, their fathers horse is diagnosed with a cancer mass that is causing the animal a great deal of pain... Claire takes him back to where she found him standing beside her father who had died of a massive heart attack. You see her crying and pointing a rifle at the horses head, she says she is sorry, and... well you get the picture...

I had to watch Series 1 twice before I could get passed the realism and enjoy the interweaving of personalities both male and female.

Now that hasn't been hard to watch... There are some gorgeous men to look at on this show! Nor has it been hard to watch these 5 women become a team who do what they were told could not be done... successfully keep the ranch solvent and eventually profitable.

I hope you get to see this nearly perfect television series. It is not a waste of time... indeed it's quite the opposite. Now if they will just release the series on DVD in the US, I'll be in Auz heaven!

A homely drama you'll dip in and out of.
withlovecarol5 February 2022
I loved watching it the first time and come back to it regularly. It's warm and earthy aussie outback dynasty with no money, lots of drama, a little far fetched but with characters you love returning to see. I always felt a bit of yearning to be part of the mcleods and run off to Australia to work the land!! But I can do it in comfort from my sofa. Hope you enjoy it.

Wonderful!
heavenly_heart_126 November 2004
This is the story of two daughters that together with some other woman drives a farm in Gungellan, Australia. I think this drama is a wonderful production!! It is one of the best I've seen! The story is realistic and fun. And it's even great to see that women can drive a farm.

You can see yourself in the characters, it's not like a typical soap where people do mad things every now and then. The nature is beautiful, as usual, in the scenes. Every set has an on theme, so you won't know what will happen in the next program. I think the best program were when Claire gave birth to little Charlotte.

You have to see it to know why:)

Are we all really that stupid
transformer-212133 April 2019
I started watching this as a lark because I had nothing to do. The first two seasons were actually very good the third not so much, after that some of the writers must have taken stupid pills and made everyone else take them also because it became unbearable to watch. Making everyone look dumb and stupid ruined the rest of the series. If you have nothing but time to waste and nothing else to do this is for you.

The first 3 seasons are good. The next 2 are on a slide downhill. The last 3 are just stupid people doing dumb things. It becomes an uninteresting soap opera that even my wife doesn't care for and she was addicted to it.

Love the Mcleods daugthers
biameier29 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I love the story between the two sisters Clair and tess. After Clair died I was a little bit anoid by Steve. My favorite part is the parts about tess and nick finally being together. When they thought nick was dead in Argentinia, but tess does not want to believe that. And then he comes back. After they left again for Argentina I was not so much adictet to the show anymore. And I think for me the end is not that satisfying as it could have been.

Dumb writers
samueladupuy20 November 2019
Never will you ever come across dumber writers, the most implausible disasters every show. Run out of story lines, turns to supernatural, kills off the best characters. Crooks never go to jail. Successful ranch for hundreds of years, now can not make a dime. I wish I had counted the number of robberies. The number of broken romanaces. The shear stupidity of the characters, is unbelievable . Still addictive with a love it, hate it, relationship with the show. Amost to the end of season seven.

Why I rated it 4 out of 10 stars.
pafoxwell20 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely loved this show the first three seasons. The death of Claire McLeod broke my heart just as it did to every fan. After that there were some great characters, but it became much like a soap opera for awhile. Each time I fell in love with a character they left or died. This show has so much tragedy I'm almost sorry I watched it all the way through. However, The characters are complex with interesting back stories. On character development and acting this drama is top notch.

The storyline could use more laughter and less grief in my opinion. It lacks the balance we hope to find in life. Balance between life and death, tragedy and happiness.

I do very much like the supernatural themes, ghosts, and characters who connect with the past or the future. They are wonderful and I will have to give it one more star from my initial four. My rating is mostly based on emotion, my heart was broken too many times in the series.

Addicting :)
gaby_schaap16 December 2005
I'm watching McLeod's Daughters since the first broadcasting here in Holland. That was in October of this year. Since then, I haven't missed a single episode!

It's very realistic drama. Sometimes a bit too obvious, but that makes it fun to watch.

It's on TV every workday here in Holland, so it's my dinner series, and since I live alone, it's great 'company'.

I can really recommend everyone to watch it. Not only for the characters (how I will miss Claire...) but also the beautiful landscapes and the intriguing story lines.

Don't miss it!

Greatly Underrated ... Truly Tops!
SaddleBrooke9 January 2009
My wife and I saw some of the re-runs on TV, and quickly became addicted to the show. Other TV favorites include Westwing, House and The Sopranos ... each different from each other, but highly recommended.

McLeod's Daughters is the top-rated outback series in Australia. The series covers lots of stories about each of the characters, and includes lots of beautiful scenery of southern Australia. Having relocated from NYC, NY to Tucson, AZ about 10 years ago, we've really come to appreciate the western atmosphere and scenery.

We used Netflix to view seasons 1-7 (of 8, which is not released on DVD yet).

Uneven Aussie Drama... gorgeous scenery
newyorkmini30 January 2009
As a former resident of Adelaide and South Australia I was very happy to discover this TV series set in the "outback" of SA (though Gawler is really not the Outback). I was homesick and I loved seeing the magnificent South Australian landscape that I am very familiar with, as well as the few episodes filmed in Adelaide (I recognized many of the locales).

PROS - Scenery - the amazing scenery of my South Australian home. - The Animals portrayed realistically (death, sickness and healthy animals) - First few seasons were excellent - Filmed on film (not digitally filmed) and this is a costly process. - They did not show one koala or kangaroo which seems to be de rigeur for any show filmed in Oz.

CONS - Actors/actresses portray the Aussie stereotype of white gorgeous skinny women and muscled men who drive Utes, motorcycles and like to punch each other out. It's not realistic, but then again, it is a television drama. - Cast of characters were constantly changing and unless you watched the series in the right sequence from the beginning it is easy to get confused as to who is who. The revolving door was the worse part. - Later episodes started to degenerate, IMO, into soap opera territory. Overly contrived example episode where Alex proposed to Stevie involved helping a neighbor, getting their tuck hijacked, etc. etc. and he proposes while in mud. Later on redeems himself by flying her on a helicopter to tell her he loved her in a field of canola (which I have seen personally and its gorgeous). - some of the slang may be hard for non-Aussies to understand. some of it we don't really use in Adelaide (e.g., saying hoo roo for goodbye).

A quality Australian drama for the ages!
SylvieQR23 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
McLeod's Daughters is one of those well made dramas, that pulls at your heart strings (thanks to the good writing, fantastic acting and good music) set on a working farm, showcasing farm and country life at its heart. Farm life, work and hardships aren't glossed over, which makes the stories and 'realities' of the characters believable. Plus the scenery is beautiful. I imagine this is why the show is shown and loved across the world. On top of this, the personal stories of the characters are surprisingly gritty (Becky season 1 for example). It was ahead of its time, telling primarily female stories through and through.

I recently watched all 8 seasons from start to finish, and while I love the show and always will, a few things annoyed me:

1. I know the story line needs to 'keep moving' to keep peoples interest, but at least PRETEND more time has passed between events. E.g. Claire has a baby and almost right away is being encouraged to start dating or find someone. What the.... particularly since these are strong independent women, I found this difficult to wrap my head around.

2. Certain themes repeat themselves (i.e. Women getting involved with married men). I get this happens and can become a 'grey zone' particularly for those involved, but this happened a tad too often...

3. Certain people (family members) get parts of the farm signed over to them overnight. Again, at least pretend more time has passed. These new owners appear over night and because of the good acting make it work, but a lot of personal and story development is actually wasted because of this.

4. Tess and Nick leave for Argentina for a second time, and are almost never ever mentioned again (I think they are mentioned ONCE). For someone who has the biggest stake in Drovers Run, it's bizarre and doesn't make sense. Particularly when the farm is in financial trouble (they go to Argentina after all, to make money and secure their farms for the future). People seem to be dropped from the storyline quite a bit. I understand this, but again, for the story's sake, a mention for the background would be good (e.g. Stevie reunites with her parents on her wedding day, but her Sister is missing and not mentioned).

5. Two people died in the last season. I don't think that was necessary and almost 'lazy writing' in my eyes. Perhaps the writers were really stuck, I don't know, and I get certain actors don't want to come back but it was the last season.... and least give them the opportunity to 'come back' in future! Human stories can be personal and gritty enough without having to kill people off for dramas sake.

That is all. Don't believe the bad reviews that aren't even substantiated, this is a great show. I hope Australian tv has the courage to create more like it!

Wonderful
bks13-19 May 2006
McLeod's Daughters is a great TV series.

From the first time I watch each episode. It is without horror and unmotivated nonsense. It's just good entertainment of friendship, love, adventure, just good living.

I regret the end of Claire's figure. I found her a very refreshing female character.

The male characters in this series (Alex an Nick) are very nice and you do not search any longer for an Adonis. You found it!!

I hope this series will go on for a long time so that I can see what happens with Tess, Charlotte etc.

A brutally good TV series.

Excellent until end of season 3
hoffmannkenya1 September 2023
It all went downhill after Claire was killed off and the storyline sort of wishy washy itself through endless soap opera style tragedies and just messed up the good work that came before. I would give it a 20 out of 10 for the first 3 seasons. After that it's not really worth watching.

That Becky was also gone just wasn't the same and the romance between Tess and Nic took so long and it's still iffy. It's as if they've outgrown eachother because the writers kept changing the script. Would have been a much stronger storyline if they were married early in season 4 and adventures could go on from there.

Great show - Strong Women Role Models - music gets tiring
crapolamailbox21 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Binge watched this series on Amazon. First - love that this show revolves around the premise of strong women taking care of a farm and not needing men to assist. It's great to see this.

The first three seasons hook you in. Always dramatic - but things usually resolve by the end. However, once you hit the end of the 3rd season, things start to get pretty predictable and you see the formula. They drag out and torture you with will they or won't they get together. And then once couples get together - disaster strikes. Once you get together and find happiness, someone is going to die. It is almost comical towards the end of the series. The beginning of this series is so very different than the end.

But I did enjoy it. The other part that is absolutely torture is the music. All songs are written by the same artist - she appears in one of the episodes as a cameo - you can recognize her voice immediately. But the songs come across as so cheesy. Couldn't wait to fast forward the credits so as not to hear the songs.

It is worth the 45 minutes to see strong ladies make it through the outback. It is interesting to see them handle the strenuous jobs and they never ask for a mans strength.

How to ruin a wonderful series.
frandixon26 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The first 2 1/2 seasons of McLeod's' Daughters were wonderful. I live in the US and over the quarantine of the Covid19 virus my husband and I became hooked on Australian tv. We loved 800 Words, The Heart Guy (Doctor, Doctor in Australia) and started watching McLeod's Daughters because it had several familiar actors in it. We really enjoyed it for the first 2 1/2 seasons but then it turned into a Master Class in how to destroy a wonderful show. First you kill off your main character. Then you have her sister who promised to care for her sister's child give her away. Then we have the episode where Tess is finally about to consummate her relationship with Nick, but the story splits between Tess arriving at Nicks and what we have been waiting for finally happening and an alternative story where she doesn't make it to Nick's and once again - you guessed it - nothing happens between the two of them. How long can they draw this out? By the way is this plot stolen from the Gwyneth Palltro movie Sliding Doors. And the repeat themes - the cattle are stolen, the car is stolen! As much as I love the characters and the scenery and I do intend to stick to it to the end, it could have been so much better. One last thought I know Lisa Chappell left to persue a singing career but remember Ricky Nelson from the Ozzie and Harriet show? He was on a weekly program and still managed to have an extremely successful career in music.
