Underrated Sweet Little Cartoon Series
HarlowMGM29 December 2021
Growing up in the 1970's and crazy about Hanna-Barbera cartoons I had always wanted to see PRECIOUS PUPP but it was apparently never rerun after it's mid-1960's stint on Saturday mornings. Precious Pupp and his owner Granny infrequently appeared in "all star" Hanna-Barbera comic books and I remember a local department store had a Super 8 film of Pupp for the toy Easy Show Projectors which had been hanging on a peg wall for years, long after the series and even the projectors were available. This is one of H-B's sweeter cartoon comedies. Precious Pupp is a sweet-natured mutt who can be a rascal when the mood strikes him but always the devoted and protective companion to Granny. I think one of the reasons Precious Pupp was not revived in later HB programs was he is very similar to the more malicious Muttley (including the same wheezing laugh) who was greatly popular with kids a few years later on WACKY RACES and it's spinoff DASTARDLEY AND MUTTLEY. Granny herself is pretty much the same character as Tweety Bird's Granny. 26 Precious Pupp cartoons were made each running about seven minutes. They are not hard to find online and well worth checking out if you like this sort of cartoon.
