What i was waiting for.

What a game, the emphasis on this game obviously was the single player, which indeed is awesome. It starts directly after Quake 2, which is a good thing even though that game has a fair few years behind it. Earth forces return again to battle the Stogg, a cybernetic race which is bent on destroying Humans. After the death of the Makeron in Quake 2 and with the assumption of earth forces that Strogg forces would be in disarray following the death of their previous leader(the Makeron), proved to be wrong. So, earth returns again in a much grand scale to their last attempt to stop the Strogg from wiping out Humanity.

You, are Matthew Kane one of Earths best soldiers in an elite fighting squad named Rhino. Your job is of course to assist in the destruction of the newly created Makeron and the Strogg, the game itself starts off pretty hectic. With a fair amount of assistance from co-soldiers. This does start to dwindle abit later during the course of the campaign, but still this remains to be a solid fps.

You are basically armed with all the weapons from Quake 2(except from a couple), obviously updated, but they keep the names of the originals(Hyper Blaster, Chain gun etc..). The game offers superb voice acting, which is lent by some of Hollywoods fine actors. Now those of you wondering if its just a Doom 3 rip off or anything like that, let me tell you, your wrong. This game has more action(which it was supposed to be)a better story line, better looking guns, better scripted events, HUMAN INTERACTION.

It has it's fair share of scares(hardly as much as Doom 3) and nifty scripted scenes, but does turn out to be a one man show towards the end. All in all this is a excellent game that all fps vets should have on their shelfs. If i was to sum up this game i would give it 9/10 it really is that good. SO GO BUY IT.

A fun ride but nothing special

The game starts with you a new recruit in a landing craft with the best squad of the whole army ready to land and fight the strogg. the scene reminded me most of the intro of the half-life add-on: opposing force, and just like in that, the landing doesn't go very smoothly. A big explosions knocks you out and you awake laying on the ground with a soldier trying to get you on your feet. Don't get me wrong I am in no way trying to downgrade the intro to this game but a little more originality might have made it a little less nostalgic.

You progress trough the game following orders from your CO's and in most cases are accompanied by your buddies, which despite sometimes making strange decisions are actually quite smart and will take cover behind everything that is knee high, hardly ever get in your way and Medics and technicians will come and heal you at there own accord when they see you need it. Your enemies on the other hand are pretty stupid, standing in the middle of hallway's totally open trying to rain down bullets, or what ever the hell else they have at you. There are some points in witch the enemy will hide behind objects but in most situations there just cannon fodder, there aim leaves for some wishing too as they have trouble hitting a moving target. There are some tough situations that you think may require some caution to later find at that the only way to get passed them is to just run at them and keep shooting and moving, It may not work for them but it certainly works for you. The weapons aren't very special either. You start off with only your trusted hand gun and quickly find yourself a assault rifle which you will keep dear to your heart as it is the only weapon (other then the hand gun) that has a flashlight. You will obtain more and more powerful weapons throughout the game. There's the trusted shotgun, grenade gun, nail gun and more of those clichéd weapons that we have seen in almost every other FPS so I don't think you will get very excited by any of them. At least not by the ones you can carry. Because at some point in the game you will have full control over a tank! And man can that thing wreak havoc! It's also a nice change of scenery as most of the game is in side dark claustrophobic hallways.

Throughout the game you will get to recognize the faces and voices of your comrades and morn some of there deaths. Thanks to outstanding voice acting and impressive facial modeling (despite them some times looking at you like they are stoned) the atmosphere does a good job keeping you on the edge of your seat too, with strange noises coming from All over the place and a world animated by all sorts of moving machinery and nice lighting FX.

This game is a leap from the great graphics but boring game play of doom 3. You now have great graphics and a lot better game play however other then the story this game doesn't add much to the world of first person shooters. The weapons are clichéd and some of the situations you get in to have been done millions of times before and much better. The story is really the best part of this game and you will have no trouble getting sucked in to it. The game does have its short comings but the graphics sound and specially the story makes this game a must have for fps junkies.

There is how ever one thing that id like to add. and its not just to this game either. The main character, You! Doesn't say a word… what is it with first person shooters where the lead roll is a mute? Why doesn't he talk, and more over why doesn't any of you're comrades mind? A person that can't or doesn't speak seems like a pretty big liability on the battle field to me. It's a shame and something that I hope will be changed in the future. But until then grab your gear men! Where gone kill us some strogg!!!

It's got the right stuff...

This came out around the time of the original Doom 3. Despite both games being ID futuristic shooters, they are very different games. I played this again recently on Lieutenant and it is a challenging game (Way more so than Quake 2). There is a pretty decent story about what makes a human a human. The ending stuck with me as well. I get the "New Orders" idea as both ironic and tragic. This isn't a game that is going to provide fancy ways to get out of trouble. Here you are either fast or dead. This is back in the old med pack days. Unfortunately, this game has some very barren areas for heals. Sometimes you will find yourself in several major fights without a single med pack. You die a lot in this game. This is not like new games at all (maybe Call of Duty but without the silly numbers and respawn rates). Almost every enemy in this game can cause a reload. Each requires a certain tactic to deal with. More complicated is when several different types attack at the same time. Sick of games that seem more like an exercise in inventory management than an actual challenge to play? This would be the game for you.

Better than what came before, offers exactly what it needs

Warning: Spoilers
It's very telling when a game can take two minutes to show a player something, in a day and age when developers usually spend thirty minutes *talking* about it.

The game in question, of course, is Quake 4. Whereas many modern games spend a great deal of time in the beginning to explain the plot, Q4 provides you with the required within the small introduction: Humans are fighting the horrific Strogg. During Quake 2, a lone marine assassinated their leader, thinking it would throw Strogg forces into disarray. It didn't. You're to go in and create some disarray.

Q4's brisk pace doesn't stop at the introduction, with every level giving the player a sense of urgency. While the game is linear (doors there to give the sense of a larger building never unlock, certain doors will only open when the player needs to be behind it) the sense that a major war is going on is never eliminated. An example of this is when you're in a relatively isolated structure: while you're essentially alone, your fellow soldiers are heard fighting and dying to hold the ground you're on.

One of the most publicized plot twists behind Quake 4 deserves special recognition. It is common in current games to see certain things happen from a third-party viewpoint, but the player's conversion from a human to Strogg is done in first-person. It is one thing to see a computer character stabbed in the heart and then have its legs amputated, it is an entirely other thing to feel as though you *are* the one being stabbed in the heart.

Are there weaknesses to Q4? yes. The hit boxes of enemies is a little odd, often finding that the game didn't register your shot as a hit because the cross-hair wasn't red when you fired. The game is extremely linear, preventing replay from being extremely fun. Sometimes the player's weapons are *too* effective - I honestly don't know what some of the enemies really look like, as they die and self-destruct before I could get a good look at them.

Regardless, Quake 4 is an extremely excellent game. In the wasteland of games that offer intellectual amusement at the expense of enjoyable game play, it offers something games nowadays lack: an experience.

Better than Doom-3
gelziabar30 November 2006
Quake-4's story is nothing new really, and the intro is more or less like Starship Troopers. You play Matthewe Kane from an elite unit called Rhino squad and thats about the whole story. Where Quake-4 succeeds is in its frantic action during the vehicle sequences as well as the boss fights. These alone are worth playing tbe game for. The action otherwise, is a bit faster paced than Doom-3. The graphics look far better than anything you saw in Doom-3 but darkness still prevails a lot on most levels. The weapons unfortunately, do not feel anywhere as good as those in the previous Quake games. However, there are plenty of tough enemies. Multiplayer is really not that great. This game is also extremely violent and gory and not suggested for younger audiences.
