Like all my favorite shows ...
Samus Aran18 May 2004
... this one was canceled. There have been lots of shows that strive to be strange and whacked out, but none had quite as wonderful flow as Weird TV did. They would sometimes hit you with numerous odd 5-second clips, and sometimes focus on on particular theme for 5+ minutes. They had just enough recurring characters (the trash beast comes to mind) and just enough recurring cut-scenes (the good ole comfort zone) to make it work.

There are so many scenes that stick in your head after watching Weird TV. From the animation (usually not hand-drawn animation, more along the lines of stop-motion and claymation) to the guy that hung thousands of empty bottles and cans on a huge tree (I think that was one of the Weird America sequences, where they interview various strange folk) ... Weird TV just worked for me.

It was on at odd hours, but it had a pretty loyal audience, not sure why it was canceled. One of the nice things about the show was that they let people send in tapes and ideas to the show, which was where a fair bit of their bizarre content came from.

I give Weird TV a 10 out of 10, and wish there was somewhere to get the complete series on DVD.

WeirdTV was amazing!

It's almost impossible to describe WeirdTV. It's the kind of show that you either loved it or hated it, and if you loved it, odds are you have quite a few problems.

WeirdTV was a collection of weird segments and captured events such as the Burning Man Festival. There were a few recurring segments on the show, such as Shadoevision, etc. Sometimes the show made you think, sometimes it made you cringe, but it almost always made you laugh. It's a real shame that it was cancelled. I believe you can still stream some stuff from their site. If you find any tapes in a movie store or a bargain bin of some shop, I recommend you snatch them up!

Original WeirdTV

Warning: Spoilers
I doubt that you could consider any of what I will describe as "spoilers" but I will talk about this show.

The original WeirdTV was available on C-Band satellite and maybe a couple rarecable channels. It was Galaxy 7 Transponder 10 as I recall. In otherwords you had to have a 7 to 12 foot dish to watch the "original". It would air Saturday nights I believe from 10PM Central to Midnight. Later in 2003 or so it aired as a half hour segment on TV stations across the US and Canada. Somewhere I have my notebook with a notation of this show from when I first installed my dish and the locations of what I had found being beamed from the sky.

Some of the favorite things I remember were: THE SPONSORS: The Space Bass Earthquake Detecto Alarm (featuring a woman in a chain bikini) Dino Poop

Space Bass Medicine Hour (I think this was its name). The Adventures of Riccardo Hollywood and Vine (Music Video) I believe Corky Quackenbush did this. Echo Man Burning Man festival. I especially liked the Buckaroo Bonzai guy with the rocket sled.

Chuck Cirino driving around in the desert.

At the time that this aired, or at least when I saw it (Fall of 1994 to Christmas time 1994) it was the one show I looked forward to watching each week. A brilliant show, true to its name.

A sublime piece of TV genius

Even after more than 12 years, I still remember Weird TV. What a sublime piece of television genius it was - like many others I would love to find it on DVD. I can't count the number of evenings I spent up late watching it, delving into its weird and wonderful world.

Someone out there in TV land must have copies of it degrading into oblivion in the back of some long-forgotten storage room. Rescue them! Bring them forth unto the world once again, that those of us who Remember might revel in it once again! We command it!

You, out there! Make it so!

It must be!
