This 21-minute, 29-second black & white short included on the Ethan Hawke written/directed/starring/novelized flick THE HOTTEST STATE d.v.d. precedes the similarly-themed feature by about 12 years in real time. If you are curious to see a Hawke project talk love to death WITHOUT Julie Delpy (BEFORE SUNRISE & BEFORE SUNSET), but don't have 117 minutes to waste on THE HOTTEST STATE, just watch this short. Sure, it's a tad clumsier, but it has the same percentage of female nudity and features two Bob Dylan dirges. The couple in the short--just-married Jim & Leslie Green--seem precursors of THE HOTTEST STATE protagonist William's parents (Vince & Jesse), though they have different names and are played by different actors. Leslie seems as dumb as a post, thinking a pregnancy test will work a couple hours or days (time is nebulous here) after intercourse, with Jim coming off as equally clueless. The devolution of their feelings for each other is not particularly novel or interesting, but hey--some people LIKED Before Sunrise.
