Bruce Willis has been creeping up on Nicolas Cage’s bread and butter — C-level action movies that pass through the multiplex with little in the way of fanfare and less in the way of actual audience interest — for a few years now, turning in roles in mostly underseen films like “Fire With Fire,” “Precious Cargo,” and “Vice” with startling regularity (while, somehow, still landing genuinely exciting parts in films like the upcoming “Death Wish” remake and the long-hyped “Glass”). But Mark Cullen’s ruthlessly boring and decidedly dismal “Once Upon a Time in Venice” marks a new low in Willis’ still-trucking action career, one that even Cage would likely flinch at, even if it does feature an entire sequence dedicated to naked skateboarding.

A dramedy that the Duplass bros. were originally looking to add to their film canon, it’s Sundance habitual Jeffrey Blitz who would pick up with torch for a project that would also coincidentally see him reteam with his Rocket Science starlet Anna Kendrick. We’re thinking that after having his entire filmography in Spellbound (2002), Rocket Science (2007) and Lucky (2010) play out in Park City that this might be a fourth time’s a charm. Also starring Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, Tony Revolori, June Squibb, Wyatt Russell and Amanda Crew, filming on the Atlanta set Fox Searchlight production began last March. We’re assuming that the trimmings and cutlery on Table 19 are more than ready.

Mr. Robinson isn’t a show for everyone, which is largely a function of the fact that Welcome Back, Kotter wasn’t for everyone, and owed a lot of the success it had to limited alternatives.
Don’t get me wrong, Welcome Back, Kotter was not only a great show, but it managed a surprising amount of influence on the landscape of television for decades… it just wasn’t for everyone.
Mr. Robinson stars Craig Robinson as a part-time substitute/part-time singer who runs into an old flame and hopes to rekindle things. When he learns that she now teaches at their old High School, he takes the first chance he gets to substitute there.
Mr. Robinson is laid-back almost to a fault… well, probably to a fault. He quickly hints that he wasn’t very serious about school, and hasn’t been very serious about anything since, but he...

A project that was at one point in time set up at Fox Searchlight and had the Duplass bros. looking to direct from their own script, Jeffrey Blitz who has been attached to the project since 2011 is finally setting sail and will reteam with his Rocket Science star on Table 19. While she was mentioned back in November along potentials Steve Carell and Tina Fey, it was just announced that Anna Kendrick will indeed topline an ensemble cast comprised of Craig Robinson, Lisa Kudrow, Stephen Merchant, Tony Revolori, June Squibb, Wyatt Russell and Amanda Crew. Michael Rooker has been in just about everything in his 28 year career, from Eight Men Out and Mississippi Burning to Slither and The Walking Dead, plus guest roles on basically every TV show to hit the air. Next weekend you can watch him re-team with director James Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy, in which he plays Yondu, the menacing leader of the Ravagers and hero Peter Quill’s sort of adoptive father. Rooker looks almost as intimidating in person as he does on screen. With his shaved head, manicured facial hair, filigree silver cross, black t-shirt, and jeans, he could easily be a member of a biker gang. But get him talking and he is like an Adhd kid on a sugar high. He is friendly and laughs frequently. I sat down with him to talk about Yondu’s arrow, the strange bodies populating the galaxy, and The Merle and Daryl Show,...

After passing over a comedy pilot from Craig Robinson last spring, NBC has changed its mind and given the show a six-episode order.
"Mr. Robinson" stars "The Office" alum Robinson as a musician who gets a job teaching at a middle school, where he chafes under the school's rules. As seen on "The Office" and occasionally in his stand-up comedy, Robinson has some musical chops himself.
The pickup comes with some changes behind the scenes. Robb and Mark Cullen, coming off ABC's canceled "Back in the Game," are joining the series as executive producers and showrunners, while "Office" Ep Greg Daniels has left the project. (Another "Office" veteran, Owen Ellickson, wrote the pilot script.)
Robinson and the Cullens previously worked together on "Lucky," an FX comedy that ran for one season in 2003.

ABC's "Trophy Wife" has developed into the best new comedy of an otherwise dire season on the big networks. So it's a relief to learn that the series, which was created by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins and stars Malin Akerman as a party girl turned third wife to a lawyer (Bradley Whitford) with three kids, has been picked up for a full first season. The continued survival of "Trophy Wife" was by no means certain considering its ratings, but ABC has decided to give the show a chance with a season run alongside the better rated but less critically loved freshman series "The Goldbergs." Rebel Wilson's "Super Fun Night" hasn't been given the same treatment yet, but has gotten four more episodes. "Back in the Game," on the other hand, has been canceled, though it's looking like all 13 episodes already ordered will air. Co-creator Robb Cullen ("Lucky," "Cop Out...

Chicago – From Archie Bunker to Frank Barone, TV has a long history of crotchety, irascible, borderline offensive fathers who really love their kids. To the long list, we can now add Terry Gannon (James Caan), the scene-stealer from ABC’s “Back in the Game,” premiering tonight, September 25, 2013 in a coveted time slot between the returns of “The Middle” and “Modern Family.”
Television Rating: 2.5/5.0
I’m torn on “Back in the Game.” Its creators — Mark & Robb Cullen (“Lucky”) — and executive producers — John Requa & Glenn Ficarra (“Bad Santa”) — are definitely talented people and one can see the potential in this gruff family comedy. The cast is strong, the concept isn’t bad, but I just didn’t find the pilot funny. It feels like it’s playing with comedy concepts that might have worked better in the ’90s. Hey, guess what? Some retired athletes are still too competitive and live vicariously through their Little League-playing grandkids?...

The first "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" footage had its Hall H Comic-Con premiere on Saturday night and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. What's already apparent is that this 'Cap will be heavy on S.H.I.E.L.D. and, as co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo explain, will bridge the two Avengers movies, creating a "very strong hand off."
I met with the Russo brothers here in San Diego shortly before their Hall H panel to talk about their highly anticipated sequel and just how two directors who are best known for their work on "Community," "Arrested Development" and the Owen Wilson movie "You, Me and Dupree" found themselves in the directors' chairs for a big budget Captain America movie.
I have to admit, after watching "You, Me, and Dupree," I didn't think a future step would be a Captain America movie.

John Corbett is the new NCIS franchise star.
The United States of Tara actor has landed a lead role in CBS’ NCIS: LA spinoff. He’ll play one of a small mobile team of “Red Team” agents who are forced to live and work together as they crisscross the country solving crimes.
Corbett will play Roy Quaid, a former NCIS Special Agent forced to retire from active service, Roy now works as an Analyst. While no longer an active agent, Roy is the most experienced investigator working for Red Team, a fact that’s not lost on any of the other agents.

Exclusive: An irreverent multi-generational comedy from Robb and Mark Cullen sparked a bidding war among multiple networks. It has just landed at the network that boasts the top family comedy on the air right now, ABC. Like Modern Family, the new single-camera project, titled Safe At Home, hails from 20th Century Fox TV. Safe At Home centers on a strong-willed, divorced, single mother who has to move back home with her salty, former career-minor-league-baseball-playing widower father and raise her son while navigating her new community and situation as she coaches her son’s little league team. In addition to writing, the Cullen brothers are executive producing with Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment. Mark and Robb Cullen created the praised FX comedy series Lucky as well as the Fox drama Heist. The duo has been focused on features for the past couple of years and wrote the 2010 action comedy Cop Out.

Okay this doesn’t bode well for a Sarah-Seth reunion on Parenthood: John Corbett, better known as the charming drunk who waltzed in and out of the Braverman Family on the NBC drama, will headline a new drama in the works for CBS this fall.
Corbett will play the Widow Detective, a decorated police detective who becomes a surrogate husband, lover and father to the families of partners who died in the line of duty. The drama is from Carol Mendelsohn (CSI) and writer David Hubbard, as well as exec producers David Hubbard and Julie Weitz.

There is plenty of pressure on John Carter director Andrew Stanton. This month’s red planet-sized blockbuster is the first live-action feature from the director, who earned two Oscars helming the animated classics Finding Nemo and Wall-e, and it signifies his first film outside of the Pixar “Brain Trust.” It is also the culmination of a nearly century-old journey to the screen and a fresh adaptation of the classic novels by pulp fiction writer Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Headlines about overspending, Disney’s incessant marketing campaign, and the Internet’s non-stop punditry have made it abundantly clear the peripheral stakes for the movie are extremely high. So high that they distract from what is a really fantastic film. John Carter is lavish, stylish, entertaining, and an amazing introduction into a rich world of epic romance and adventure.

It was only as I was leaving the theatre after watching Super that it occurred to me. I was elated, excited and energised. Super had exceeded my expectations, and was the best film I’d seen in a long time. I practically skipped out of the room with a zeal that you’ll usually only see from critics at press screenings if the free bar is still open.
I was about ready to start offering high fives to the other attendees, but then I noticed that they weren’t skipping with me. They were shuffling their feet, looking at the floor and mumbling to each other that it was ‘weird’.
I can’t say I noticed it in the screening room, but it stands to reason...

The episode opens inside Tara's head, with Bryce strapped to a gurney with a hood over his head. As he sings "The Logical Song" by Supertramp, Tara turns a wheel and ducks his head into a tub of filthy water. Waterboarding vs. Supertramp? I can't decide who's getting tortured worse.
Oh wait, yes I can, it's me. I hate that song, although knowing that it includes the "tackled" sound effect from an early handheld electronic football game once won me 25 bucks in a radio trivia contest.
Tara screams that she has a life to lead and Bryce mocks her about how badly her life is going. In a line clearly meant to foreshadow the Season Four we'll never get, Bryce says that Tara has "no idea how much crazy is bouncing around that lopsided skull of yours." Following a remark about Tara's nether regions far too vile for me to repeat here,...

Sox owner John Henry and his wife Linda have decided to back Lucky Them, an indie about a music writer searching for her ex-boyfriend. She's on assignment but willing to track him down for the story, whatever lingering hard feelings might still be there. The picture was being produced by the late great Paul Newman, but after his death, longtime beloved wife Joanne Woodward stepped in. She.s already tapped Alec Baldwin, Marisa Tomei, Thomas Haden Church and Allison Janney to star, and production should begin before the year.s end. No word on who might play what, but once principal photography begins, these details should emerge. Almost one hundred years ago, former Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold baseball legend Babe Ruth to the hated Yankees to finance a Broadway play called My Lady Friends or No No Nanette, depending on which of the many urban legends you...

Hayes joins 'Stooges': 20th Century Fox continues to fill out its cast for the Farrelly Brothers' Three Stooges remake, with Sean Hayes ("Will and Grace") entering the fold as Larry. Hayes joins Will Sasso ("$#*! My Dad Says"), who was cast as Curly last week. The casting of TV actors seems a bit odd, especially since names like Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro were once attached to the project. It now looks like the Farrellys are finding actors who best fit the roles, rather than just gathering big names. I have to give them credit for that. Stay tuned, the third leg in the tripod (Moe) will likely be cast this week. [Variety]

Marisa Tomei, Thomas Haden Church, Alec Baldwin and Allison Janney are set for the leads in the upcoming indie film Lucky Them, according to Variety. The film is co-written and directed by Huck Botko (writer of The Last Exorcism and writer/director of The Virginity Hit). The story follows a “rock music journo assigned to track down her ex-boyfriend.” So far we don't know any specifics about the cast, but it's most likely that Tomei will play the journalist.
The film is being funded by John Henry, owner of the Boston Red Sox and his wife Linda Pizzuti Henry, and was the last producing project for Paul Newman before his death. Newman's wife, Joanne Woodward, has taken over as executive producer and production is expected to begin later this year.

It’s a good sign for any project, big or small, when it builds up an impressive cast before a lot of movement happens in terms of any development. Such is the case for the upcoming indie film Lucky Them, which Variety says has pulled in Marisa Tomei, Thomas Haden Church, Alec Baldwin and Allison Janney for its leads.
The film, co-written and directed by The Last Exorcism writer and The Virginity Hit writer/director Huck Botko, follows a “rock music journo assigned to track down her ex-boyfriend.” None of the cast members have been specified, although it’s not that out there to assume Tomei is the journalist. Still, even that’s just a guess.

Preface - I love this episode. I love Bobby. If I'm being really honest, sometimes I love Bobby more than the Winchester brothers. I also love Rufus. In other words, this recap will not be objective - not like any of them are. Also, I wrote this recap during the 2011 spring hiatus but I will be writing it mostly from my impressions when the episode first aired. Therefore, I'm pretending I don't know what's up with Sam.
Shameless Promotion: I also recap White Collar and will host White Collar Tuesdays on SpoilerTV. If you haven't watched it and want to join in the discussion, I'm discussing the Pilot this Tuesday. Check it out and join us. We'd love to have you.
Previously - Bobby traded his soul to Crowley on the condition he give it back, Crowley reneged, we met Rufus and Sherriff Mills, zombies rose in Bobby's town, Bobby got his legs back,...

Even if you live and work in Hollywood, you don’t get many chances to be in the presence of greatness. And on those rare occasions when you do, you hardly ever get to be surrounded by it. Last night, we were fortunate enough to be on the red carpet at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences celebration of Bob Newhart’s 50th anniversary in show business.
So, not only did we get to interview one of our all-time TV favorites for the Archive of American Television, but we met a few of his friends, too. Lucky for us his best buddies include the mastermind insult comic Don Rickles, the sketch comedy king Tim Conway, and the historic sitcom sidekick Bill Dailey.
Along the way we heard tales of what a joy it is to work with Bob. And, even more importantly, stories about what an all around good guy he is.

"The Partridge Family" has found a new network home at NBC.
The Peacock has picked up a contemporary single-camera take on the classic ABC sitcom to be written by Jeff Rake.
It is one of two projects Rake has sold in the past week, along with untitled dramedy at Fox, a collaboration with Mitch Hurwitz to which Anthony and Joe Russo are attached to direct. Both projects have landed script commitments with penalty.
"Partridge" hails from Reveille, Geffen Records and Sony TV.
A fan of the 1970s series, Rake plans to "turn the premise on its head."
"In the original, the kids actually recruited their mom to front the band, which I can't see happening in any family on this planet," he said. "The new version will reflect what seems to me to be the more realistic family band scenario these days: a struggling, sort of well-meaning mom pimping her...

FX is getting serious about cracking the comedy genre by greenlighting two half-hour pilots tentatively titled Human Animals and Recovering My Life. The move marks the first comedy pilot orders for the network since a project from Paul Reiser got the go-ahead in June 2002. The orders are part of FX's effort to launch two comedy series simultaneously in a one-hour comedy block. The demise of the cable network's critically acclaimed comedy Lucky has been widely attributed to the fact that was launched on its own. "I think we need to be in the comedy business," FX entertainment president John Landgraf said. "We need to be more aggressive and take more shots at the comedy business, and hopefully we need to put two shows on the air at the same time."...

FX is back in business with brothers Joe Russo and Anthony Russo. The cable network is developing a single-camera comedy series project inspired by Behind the Counter With Mussolini, an award-winning one-man play by Marco Greco. The Russo brothers, who directed the pilot for FX's comedy Lucky, will write the script with Greco and Nick Santora (CBS' The Guardian). The Russos are also attached to direct as well as exec produce with Joe Freis and Joe Rappa of Pelagius Films and Santora. Behind the Counter tells the stories of the residents of a diverse area in the Bronx through the eyes of an Italian family that owns the local deli. Greco's father, a hard-working, larger-than-life Italian immigrant, ran his deli in the Little Italy part of the Bronx with an iron fist. In the play, Greco re-creates the experience of growing up behind the counter, working for his dictatorial father who had a picture of Mussolini hanging proudly on the wall and loved to tell stories about his alleged run-ins with Il Duce back when he was a kid in Italy.
Alyson Hannigan has committed to star in NBC's untitled Matt Tarses/Bill Wrubel comedy pilot. Meanwhile, the network has picked up The Friendlys, a comedy pilot from NBC Studios and Robb and Mark Cullen, the duo behind FX's offbeat comedy Lucky. Hannigan had been eyeing the untitled Tarses/Wrubel comedy project -- which revolves around the relationship between a brother and his sister who haven't spoken in 18 months -- and had met with the producers of the show when it was still in development (HR 1/7). Talks accelerated after the pilot was picked up this month, leading to the pact with Hannigan, who has a talent deal with NBC (HR 10/13).

LONDON -- Fox International Channels U.K. said Thursday that it has signed separate deals with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution and Comedy Central for series, specials and movies on its planned FX UK channel. Series titles in the deal with Warners include HBO comedy The Mind of the Married Man and Lucky, a comedy produced by Castle Rock Entertainment for FX Networks. The Comedy Central deal features that channel's hit The Man Show. Hernan Lopez, senior vp and managing director of Fox International Channels UK, said the deals reflect the direction the FX UK channel will take when it is launched via the Sky satellite platform in the first quarter of 2004. It has already set such Fox shows as NYPD Blue and The X-Files for its lineup. "Today's men, just like FX, can go from the introspection of 'The Mind of the Married Man' all the way to girls jumping on trampolines and not be apologetic about it," Lopez said. Fox International vp broadcasting and marketing Jason Thorp said the company has been studying the U.K. market for some time. "We have discovered that despite the desire of the marketing industry to segment the male audience, the reality is that the majority of men age 24-44 fit into a broad category that we have called 'Adultman, '" Thorp said. "Despite earning capacity, social background or marital status, 'Adultman' is linked by universal interests and concerns. Women and having a laugh come high on that list."...
