The Mr. Softy makeup cost $5,000 and took two hours to apply.
At the 2014 Tromadance screening, producer Roy Frumkes detailed that the film was completed in the early 1990s, but only recently screened because it had been lost for several years. As of 2014, Mr. Frumkes possesses the only copy of the film in its entirety.
James Lorinz got the idea to make this short in film school, when he remembered the cartoon mascot for the ice cream vendor Mr.Softee from his childhood, and wondered what it would be like if a man with an ice cream cone for a head was an actual living being.
The back story for the character of Mr. Softy was a send up of the Thyladomide scandal, being that he was mutated by the fictional anti-miscarriage drug, Nodroppinum, a side effect causing the fetus to be formed into whatever food the mother craved.
