How do you like that? Orlando Bloom and I have something in common: we’ve both tried to erase Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy from our memories. Well, not exactly. While participating in Variety‘s “Know Their Lines” video series, Bloom drew a blank when asked about a line by his Troy character, Paris. Bloom thought the dialogue came from his Kingdom of Heaven character, Balian de Ibelin, or Legolas Greenleaf, his elven archer from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. To his surprise, the line came from Troy, a movie he’s tried to wipe from memory.
“Oh my god, ‘Troy.’ Wow. I think I just blanked that movie out of my brain by the way,” Bloom explained. “So many people love that movie, but for me playing that character was just like [slits throat]. Am I allowed to say all of these things? I didn’t want to do the movie.

Orlando Bloom has fond memories of making movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Lord of the Rings,” but Wolfgang Petersen’s 2004 historical epic “Troy” is a different story. During an interview for Variety’s “Know Their Lines” video series, Bloom blanked on one of the lines said by his “Troy” character Paris (he thought it must be from “Kingdom of Heaven” or “Lord of the Rings”) and admitted that he has mostly blocked the movie out of his mind.
“Oh my god, ‘Troy.’ Wow. I think I just blanked that movie out of my brain by the way,” Bloom said. “So many people love that movie, but for me playing that character was just like [slits throat]. When Universal decided to jump on the first weekend of May, a slot normally taken up by Marvel’s popular superhero movies, they were hoping the combo of “Barbenheimer” stars, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, would make “The Fall Guy” a huge early summer hit. That’s not what happened. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, “The Fall Guy” had everything going for it, from two of the biggest Oscar-nominated stars from 2023’s biggest blockbusters – one who recently hosted “Saturday Night Live” to great success – plus reviews had been great going back to its premiere at the SXSW Film and TV Festival. Universal even screened the movie for exhibitors (i.e. theater owners) at the annual CinemaCon to get excitement going for the start of the summer movie season.

David Fincher’s star-studded crime thriller Se7en is one of the best in the genre. The film featuring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman in the lead, starred Kevin Spacey as a serial killer executing murders across the city based on the seven deadly sins. However, when the film was released, Spacey decided to be absent from the marketing campaign and the opening credits due to a genius reason.
Kevin Spacey in Se7en
Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt headlined Se7en as an almost-retired detective and his young partner investigating the brutal murders by the serial killer. The film can be easily credited as a horror piece due to the horrific murders that are shown. But what made it more popular for the fans was the shock to find out who the killer was. Spacey planned to make it play out that way.

In the early days of home video, people hardly ever asked questions like, “Which version should I watch?” These days, skilled editors can make post-production edit changes to their films, sometimes producing multiple ‘directors’ versions of the same motion picture. Examples of such editors include Michael Mann, Oliver Stone, and Ridley Scott, (who has director’s cuts of Kingdom of Heaven and Blade Runner).
However, the conventional group of director’s cut enthusiasts appear to be amateurs, in contrast to Zack Snyder. His numerous extended cuts offer a more intimate glimpse into his techniques and obsessions than those of any other director.
Needless to say, most casual moviegoers these days most likely associate Zack Snyder’s Justice League with the term ‘director’s cut’. Well, we can’t deny that in recent years, Snyder, 58, has gained a reputation for releasing extended cuts of his films, prompting many to question how far artistic freedom goes.

Christian Bale is known for his insane transformations and some of the most critically acclaimed roles in Hollywood. The 50-year-old Oscar winner has worked with some of the greatest directors and delivered some critically and commercially successful flicks. However, he also has a fair share of flop films in his career. Interestingly, many of these projects even came after his highly successful, The Dark Knight Trilogy.
Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Trilogy
Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy is one of the most significant works in Christian Bale’s filmography. His incredible performance as the Caped Crusader in Nolan’s gritty world elevated the trilogy’s quality and made Bale a household name. Surprisingly, even that stardom could not save the American Psycho fame from some of the biggest flops in his career.

Watching the extended director’s cut DVD of Kingdom of Heaven nearly 18 years after its release (and nearly 20 in the case of the film’s original theatrical run) is a curious thing. Among Ridley Scott’s many insights into what may still be his most beautiful looking historical epic to date, the director muses on the commentary track that the home media market is something of a godsend. Because even two decades ago, the modus operandi was “faster and simpler.”
“I think the value of this digital market is people are more willing or more ready to sit at home and enjoy the longer version,” Scott reflected. “Thank God for DVD.”
That long lost home market of yore really was a gift to filmmakers, and few of them benefited from it better than Scott. The British director famously achieved a kind of absolution when he was able to re-edit Blade Runner...

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” was revered by the British critics and scored well at the European box office, but it found a muted stateside response. (The Metascore is 64 — respectable but not stellar.) During the awards race (ballots are due January 16 at 5 Pm Pt), the movie scored well with crafts — but the Golden Globes nominated Joaquin Phoenix for “Beau is Afraid,” not “Napoleon.”
All of this leaves the 86-year-old filmmaker waiting a while longer to return to the Best Director circle; his fourth nomination was in 2016 for “The Martian.” He caught up with us on Zoom at his vacation home in Provence before he wraps the last few weeks of post production on “Gladiator 2,” which will be released Thanksgiving weekend. He likes to skirt around some questions.

Ridley Scott came, he saw, he conquered. The legendary director's "Napoleon" might not be a box office hit in the traditional sense, but it was a generally successful experiment in theatrical releases for Apple. Not only that, it might even prove to be the first of many such releases for the tech giant going forward.
"Napoleon" itself was more of a mixed bag, so far as the theatrical cut is concerned. As Chris Evangelista noted in his review for /Film, the version released in theaters plays like "a CliffsNotes tour through the life of Napoleon Bonaparte," racing through major events in the infamous French emperor and military commander's life at a breakneck speed. As for what it does leave in, well, a lot of it is not only historically inaccurate but -- perhaps more importantly -- it's also just less interesting than what happened in real life.

Ridley Scott has found the god of music for his upcoming ‘Gladiator’ sequel, reports ‘Variety’.
Harry Gregson-Williams has been hired to compose the score for the hotly anticipated Paramount feature, which is due to be out on November 22, more than 24 years after the Oscar-winning original starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix.
The film, adds ‘Variety’, marks the seventh collaboration between Scott and Gregson-Williams. The composer has penned the scores for ‘The Martian’, ‘Prometheus’, ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’, ‘Kingdom of Heaven’, ‘The Last Duel’ and ‘House of Gucci’.
Other credits for Gregson-Williams include ‘Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget’, ‘The Meg’, ‘Mulan’, ‘The Gilded Age’, ‘The Equalizer’, ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ and all three ‘Shrek’ films.

2023 was a surprisingly great year for several movie genres, but action fans in particular had a bounty of terrific options to choose from. When it came time for a few of the /Film writers and editors to get together and rank our favorites, our individual lists were overflowing with great titles. But in accordance with the unwritten laws/demands of the Internet, we were forced to make some tough decisions, whittle our choices down to a collective ten films, and rank them accordingly.
As is often the case, the movies that didn't make this list could easily comprise an impressive list of their own. When the inventive and propulsive "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the energetic and comedic "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," the brutal and pulpy "Sisu," the touching and hilarious "Polite Society," and the moody and subversive "The Killer" get relegated to honorable mentions, it becomes clear how...

Writer, director, and producer Ridley Scott has been making movies for decades, but one of his earliest features was also apparently one of his most difficult. The man behind "Napoleon" (read our review!) is no stranger to directing historical epics, real-world dramas, and even existential science-fiction, but in an interview with Wired in 2007, he revealed that the most difficult film to create was his 1982 science fiction classic, "Blade Runner." Loosely based on the 1968 Phillip K. Dick novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?," "Blade Runner" is a noirish sci-fi starring Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, who hunts down renegade android "replicants" in his job as a blade runner. In the course of hunting down a handful of such replicants that escaped from an off-world labor camp, he starts to question the very nature of humanity. It's heady, moody stuff, but it's also a deeply beloved film that inspired both a sequel and an animated series.

Aardman’s flock of clay chickens is back. And so is their composer.
23 years after Chicken Run became a stop-motion smash hit, Ginger, Rocky, Babs, Mac and the rest of the coop are returning for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, landing on Netflix on Dec 15. Ridley Scott’s career is marked first and foremost by its sheer prolificness. There are very few directors of any age who work frequently enough to have two films coming out the same year. Scott’s done it three times in 2001, 2017, and 2021; and those later two times were when he was past the age of 80.
Since he made his debut with the swashbuckling period drama “The Duellists” in 1977, Scott has been a steady, constant presence at the cinema. His longest break has been two four-year gaps between releases — “1492: Conquest for Paradise” and “White Squall” from 1992 to 1996 and “The Martian” and “All the Money in the World” and “The Last Duel” from 2017 to 2021, the latter gap widened by the pandemic. More frequently, Scott only goes two or even just one year before dropping a new film, resulting in an impressively robust 28 filmography.

There’s a good old fashioned box office battle brewing.
Disney’s “Wish,” an animated adventure that had been expected to dominate the Thanksgiving holiday is facing off against Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” for the top spot over the five-day stretch. And the dystopian prequel, which is currently in its second week of release, is showing impressive resilience against the family flick. Plus, Apple Original Productions’ “Napoleon” is out-pacing initial estimates and giving the other two, more commercially-oriented films a run for their money.
Well, that’s the good news. The bad is that neither “Wish” nor “Napoleon” are performing like Thanksgiving blockbusters of yore, with the Disney movie looking like another box office dud for a studio that had previously enjoyed an unprecedented record of success. “Wish” earned a disappointing $3.9 million over Thanksgiving, bringing its total to $12.2 million. Generally this release strategy has paid off with hits such as Frozen (2013- $67.3 million domestic opening), Moana (2016- $56.6 million domestic opening), Coco (2017- $50.8 million domestic opening), Ralph Breaks The Internet (2018- $56.2 million domestic opening) and Frozen II (2019- $85.9 million domestic opening). Of course the past few years saw those stellar Disney openings drop off a bit with 2021’s Encanto starting off with $27.2 million, although that movie really caught on when it hit hime video/ streaming. The same can’t be said for last years flat out bomb, Strange World which opened with just $12.1 million and finished with only $37.9 million.
This year Disney looks to right the ship with Wish, the story of a girl who wishes upon a star and that star comes to life. Basically the story Disney has been pitching us for the better part of a century!

“All art is autobiographical,” Federico Fellini once said. “The pearl is the oyster’s autobiography.” No one would accuse Napoleon, Ridley Scott’s two-and-a-half-hour epic (that’s the theatrical cut’s running time, mind you; there’s a four-hour version waiting in the wings as well) about the French dictator’s rise and fall, of being thinly veiled autofiction in period dress. You sure as hell wouldn’t call it a pearl, either. Starting with the French revolution and ending with Monsieur Bonaparte’s no-bang-all-whimper exit from this mortal coil,...

The consensus thus far on Ridley Scott's "Napoleon," including from /Film's own Chris Evangelista, is that it feels like the shadow of a greater film — namely, the four-hour cut that Scott has confirmed will premiere on Apple TV+ at a later time. This wouldn't be the first time that such a fate befell one of Sir Scott's historical epics. Let's go back to 2005 when his opus "Kingdom of Heaven" met a muted response.
Set in the late 12th century, the film follows French blacksmith Balian (Orlando Bloom), who joins his long-lost father Baron Godfrey (Liam Neeson) on a quest to Jerusalem. Balian is seeking redemption; his wife died by suicide after the death of their child, denying herself entrance to Heaven, and he then killed the village priest (Michael Sheen) after the man mutilated her corpse. Ridley Scott is not a man who minces words. His press tour for his $200 million Apple epic “Napoleon” has already seen the 85-year-old filmmaker proclaiming that it’s “about feckin’ time” he won an Oscar and telling anyone critiquing the film’s historical accuracy to “get a life.” So it shouldn’t be too surprising that he’s not worried about what the French people think of his portrait of France’s most infamous general and emperor.
In a new interview with BBC News, Scott was asked about negative reviews that the film received from French media outlets including Le Figaro, Le Point, and French GQ. Predictably, Scott laughed off the criticisms.
“The French don’t even like themselves,” Scott said. “The audience that I showed it to in Paris, they loved it.”

Imagine, if you will, a movie about a costumed hero flying through the air, shooting laser beams out of their eyes. Now imagine that movie had a title card that read, "Directed by Ridley Scott." I'm sorry. It's probably too early in the morning for such flights of fancy. If you did allow yourself a moment to actually consider what that might look like, though, you aren't alone. Some lonely studio exec is sitting on their piles of money, dreaming of a beautiful sunset shining off spandex, shedding a tear over what could have been.
All that is to say that Ridley Scott, the man who brought us films like "Black Hawk Down," "The Martian," "Blade Runner," "Gladiator," "Alien," Kingdom of Heaven," "Thelma & Louise," and "G.I. Jane" has been offered superhero movies in the past, and he's turned them down, according to a recent interview with Deadline. Scott was speaking about his latest offering,...

A chyron that appears at the end of “Napoleon” — after two and a half hours of turgid, grime-encrusted spectacle — informs that France’s self-anointed emperor oversaw 61 battles, listing the six that director Ridley Scott opted to stage for our benefit … or for his own glory. The director’s motives are unclear, much like those of Napoleon Bonaparte, as played by Joaquin Phoenix, who gives a mumbly and oddly anti-charismatic performance as the figure — short, slender and something of an outsider, owing to his Corsican birth — who came to rule France after the revolution.
Here, from the master of the modern epic, comes an undeniably impressive technical achievement: a bombastic old-school “great man” movie of the sort that dominated Hollywood in the late ’50s and early ’60s. But times are not the same, and though Scott is wise to which way the wind blows (he demonstrated as much in his underrated...

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” is a sumptuous feast for the eyes according to film critics who just saw the film. The movie, detailing the life of the Emperor Napoleon (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and his relationship as both a ruler and a husband to Empress Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) is “a lot of movie” according to critic and writer William Bibbiani.
The film will premiere in a truncated two hour and 38 minute cut in theaters, while debuting a four-hour cut on Apple TV+.
Many critics cited the biggest flaw was that it felt like the time had been condensed. According to IndieWire’s David Ehrlich, “Napoleon definitely feels like a 4-hour movie that’s been cut to ribbons, but it’s So funny during the first half when it’s all about Ridley Scott just reading Napoleon for filth and laughing at how embarrassing it is to be a man with ambitions.

Ridley Scott recently went on record to reveal that he has a 4-hour cut of his new historical epic, "Napoleon," and I almost wish he had kept this info a secret for a little while. Because as I sat watching the theatrical cut of Scott's film about the infamous general and emperor, I kept thinking, "This is okay, but I bet that 4-hour cut is better." Alas, I can only work with what I've been given, and what I (and everyone else) have been given is a truncated experience. Even at 157 minutes, Scott's latest feels like it only scratches the surface. It's a CliffsNotes tour through the life of Napoleon Bonaparte.
And who was Napoleon Bonaparte? The film, in its current form, doesn't seem to really know. The legendary figure is played by Joaquin Phoenix, and while Phoenix is one of our finest actors, he can't quite crack the enigma that is Napoleon.

It's easy to take for granted the weirdness and shocking nature of the extraterrestrial's lifecycle in Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 horror film "Alien."
In "Alien," John Hurt plays Kane, a crew member of the futuristic space tug Nostromo who finds an outsize, leathery egg while exploring a mysterious alien vessel. The egg opens, and a strange monster -- part lobster, part bladder -- leaps out and grabs his face. He immediately goes comatose. Later, it is discovered that the monster, while still attached to his face, has inserted an unsettling biological tube down his throat. Kane's crewmates are unable to remove the monster from his face; when they pull on it, it begins to strangle Kane with its tail, and when they cut it, it bleeds acid that can eat through metal.
After a spell, the monster drops off Kane's face of its own volition and dies. What happened? It's...

Disney has announced a major date shift in its 2024 schedule, with one big Marvel Cinematic Universe movie taking another’s place as movies get bumped to later dates. “Deadpool 3” has moved to July 6, 2024 from May 3, 2024, while “Captain America: Brave New World” moves from its Independence Day opening of July 6, 2024 to Feb. 14, 2025, the studio announced on Thursday.
Additionally, “Mufasa: The Lion King” shifts to Dec. 20, 2024 from July 5, 2024 while “Thunderbolts” moves to July 25, 2025 from Dec. 20, 2024.

Ridley Scott didn’t make “Napoleon” for history classes.
The director shrugged off criticisms over historical inaccuracies of the upcoming period piece starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French ruler during an interview with The New Yorker. The article cited TV historian Dan Snow’s viral TikTok that called out the locations and stylings shown in the film’s trailer, including having Napoleon Bonaparte show up in places he did not travel to in real life.
“Get a life,” Scott replied.
“Napoleon” looks at Napoleon’s origins and climb to power through the lens of his relationship with his wife, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby). The Apple epic aims to capture Napoleon’s famous battles, ambition, and strategy as a military leader and war visionary. The distributor doesn’t appear to be touting its historical accuracies.
The feature is set to have a four-and-a-half-hour director’s cut streaming on Apple TV+ in 2024.

A new trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming historical epic “Napoleon” has arrived, and this one seems to telegraph the “Gladiator” and “Blade Runner” filmmaker’s modern approach to the story of the French leader.
A variation of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” plays throughout the trailer, which introduces Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix’s take on Napoleon Bonaparte sans French accent. Scott made the decision to have all of his actors use their real accents (Vanessa Kirby uses her English accent while playing Bonparte’s wife Josephine), so Phoenix’s take on Bonaparte is decidedly American.
Written by David Scarpa, “Napoleon” is Scott’s return to the historical epic genre, familiar territory for him. Aside from Best Picture winner “Gladiator,” Scott also steered 1992’s “1492” and his 2005 film about the crusades, “Kingdom of Heaven,” only gained esteem when his superior director’s cut was released on home video.

Ridley Scott’s epic new film “Napoleon,” arguably one of the year’s last remaining mysteries, received a new trailer on Wednesday, just about one month before its theatrical debut.
The Apple film, which arrives in theaters via Sony, has not premiered at any of the fall festivals thus far, nor has it been screened widely to members of the press and industry.
But the new trailer is certainly promising, with star Joaquin Phoenix affecting a deadpan detachment as the famed Napoleon amid scenes of typically explosive Scott action that will look familiar to fans of “Gladiator,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings.”
Here’s the logline from Sony and Apple:

Ridley Scott traverses genre with ease, but one he goes back to time and time again is historical epics. His Oscar-winning "Gladiator" clearly endeared Scott to swords and sandals. That film featured Joaquin Phoenix as the Commodus, the vile son of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius who murders and usurps his father.
In Scott's latest, Phoenix will play another ambitious tyrant; Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military genius who made himself his homeland's emperor and aspired to conquer all of Europe. The film, simply titled "Napoleon," has now released its second trailer. The first "Napoleon" trailer, released on July 10, 2023, offered a taste of the film's sure-to-be-epic scope. /Film's Ben Pearson also attended this year's CinemaCon and was served a taste of "Napoleon."

It’s strange to be in early October and have the vast majority of notable films coming this year already having premiered, but that’s the case in 2023. Few directors are as legendary for making alternate cuts of their films as everyone's favorite cantankerous auteur, Sir Ridley Scott. Most notably, the "Alien" and "Gladiator" filmmaker has released several different versions of "Blade Runner" over the years, further fanning the flames of the never-ending debate over whether Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard is a human or replicant. Then there was his 1985 fantasy adventure "Legend," which went from being a critical and financial misfire to becoming something of a cult hit after Universal unveiled Scott's extended cut back in the 2000s (complete with Jerry Goldsmith's original score). The director's 2005 Crusades epic "Kingdom of Heaven" underwent a similar reappraisal when Scott's preferred cut of the film was made available on home media boasting a whopping 50 or so minutes of added material.

After directing massive films like “Gladiator” and “Kingdom of Heaven,” Ridley Scott knows a thing or two about historical epics. But even by his standards, “Napoleon” was a massive undertaking. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Scott spoke about the meticulous attention to detail that his team of department heads and consultants applied to the upcoming biopic that stars Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous French general-turned-emperor.

Throughout the 60 years James Bond has been on the big screen, there's been no shortage of casting controversies associated with the franchise. For 1974's "The Man with the Golden Gun," producers cast Christopher Lee in the role of villain Francisco Scaramanga, much to the chagrin of some behind the scenes. Writer Tom Mankiewicz even claimed to have "begged and pleaded" for them to find anyone else, mainly because he'd originally envisioned Jack Palance in the role.
Even Bond himself caused casting issues. When writer Ian Fleming and producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were casting 007 for "Dr. No," they all had a sense that Sean Connery was the man for the job. But before he was offered the part, he would have to screen test, which he ultimately agreed to do despite pushing back initially. But he’s also known to tinker with his films after their theatrical debuts, releasing director’s cuts of his films like “Blade Runner” and “Kingdom Of Heaven” afterward.” Would “Blade Runner” have the same cultural cache it does now without Scott’s incessant tinkering with it?

Close observers of Ridley Scott’s career know that his director’s cuts are often more notable than his theatrical releases. From initially misunderstood masterpieces including “Blade Runner” and “Kingdom of Heaven” to more offbeat fare like “The Counselor,” many of Scott’s films aren’t properly appreciated until he’s permitted to showcase his unfiltered vision without studio interference.
His latest work, “Napoleon,” is one of the British director’s most anticipated films in recent memory. Many fans and critics see the historical epic’s massive scale and casting of Joaquin Phoenix as natural parallels to “Gladiator,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2001. The film is expected to be a major player in this fall’s Oscar race — but in true Scott fashion, he is already thinking ahead to the director’s cut.

Perhaps more than any other filmmaker, Ridley Scott has thoroughly embraced the use of the director’s cut. Many of his movies have received the director’s cut treatment, including Blade Runner, Legend, and Kingdom of Heaven, and it sounds like his upcoming Napoleon movie will as well.
While speaking with Empire Magazine (via World of Reel), Ridley Scott said he has a “fantastic” director’s cut of Napoleon which is nearly four-and-a-half hours. There is no word on if or when it will be released, but Scott hopes that Apple will eventually screen it.
Napoleon’ is almost three hours long, although Scott has a “fantastic” near four-and-a-half-hour cut, which features more of Joséphine’s life before she meets Napoleon. He’d love Apple (who funded the film) to eventually screen it. But what they have now is hardly slight. “It’s an astonishing story,” Phoenix says of Napoleon’s life.

Napoleon Bonaparte fanatics, I have some very bad news for you. And for you non-fanatics, I've got some delicate explaining to do.
As you hopefully learned in school, Napoleon was one of the greatest military strategists in world history. He scored decisive victories against the massive Russian and Austrian militaries at Austerlitz in 1805, and served as Emperor of the French twice for a combined 11 years. His brilliance has been analyzed in countless books and dramatized in many movies (from Sergei Bondarchuk's masterful "War and Peace" to Stephen Herek's equally masterful "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure").
He was a fascinating man, and, ultimately, hubristic. He suffered a severe setback when he invaded Russia in 1812, and famously endured his final comeuppance at Waterloo, which resulted in the British exiling him to the island of Saint Helena where he died at the age of 51.
His life will once again be explored on...
