Very unexpected
MovieAddict201617 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A lowly woman gets on a French subway and is traveling in silence when a man suddenly appears and announces that he is in search of a woman as he hasn't been in love for over two years and is tired of feeling empty.

People laugh and scoff at the man but he ignores them, and asks any woman who is interested to get off at the next bus stop. Well, the bus stops, the woman gleefully gets off, turns around - only to realize the man on the bus was doing it solely for entertainment, to gain money from travelers.

The film ends with her standing on the platform, alone.

I was taken aback by the suddenness of the ending. It's pretty powerful, especially considering it's only four minutes long. But the director manages to convey a lot of things just through facial expressions, particularly the woman's.

Pretty brutal little film, but a very good one.

Good role model of short film
Fjkkn14 May 2021
I will wait for the next one is a short film and the leading character is a woman who has no dialogue. When she arrives at the station and goes down on the escalator, her gaze is drawn to a couple. She looks sad and bored by her day-to-day life. On the train, a man suddenly introduces himself and speaks out that he is looking for a lady who can share true love with him and then asks passengers to get off at the next station if interested. She gets curious.... While I think this film is flawless in its technical aspects, after I watched it, I felt really frustrated about the narrative. Contrary to the man, the woman doesn't say anything and only has facial expressions, but I can image her romantic background for some reason such as marital status in the past. I am curious about what happens next for the woman and the man and the situation on the train. I think this film is worth watching.

Importance of facial expression
b-6633421 February 2019
In this film, two people are the main characters. The story takes place in a train with the man's speech and the woman's reaction. The man looks suspicious at first, and other people laugh at his speech. In contrast, the woman takes it seriously. At this point, her facial expression shows her change of mind. In this film, she does not speak. Instead of that, her face is often focused on expressing how she thinks about the man's words. The angle of each character is interesting. While the man is speaking, the camera shoot not only the man but also other people as it shows that the man is speaking to everyone in the train. On the other hand, the woman is on screen only with her eyes straight at the man to show how serious she listens to him.

This is absolutely brilliant.
Anonymous_Maxine7 March 2005
I'll Wait for the Next One sets itself up as a cute little comedy skit, and it delivers on that premise but also surprises you with an incredibly moving finale. Four minute comedies are not supposed to be as moving as this film is, it's funny, charming, and heartbreaking all at the same time, showing you your emotions in a combination that they are not generally found. I can't recommend this movie enough. By the end of the diminutive film you feel like you have known the characters for years, especially the lead man and the woman looking for love, probably because they so perfectly represent.

The look on the man's face and the woman's face at the end of the film are brief moments of sheer performing brilliance rarely seen, especially in a short film, which itself is rarely seen. Seek this one out, you will laugh and you will cry, and most of all you will be moved.

THIS is how a short movie should be!

Oh, this broke my heart! The filmmaker showed such skill as he told the story of the woman on the train with no words whatsoever. The actress was great. She just really brought to life her loneliness, from her buck teeth to her terrible scarf. She was just trying so hard. This was super-great. Except it was a bit devastating in the end...

Warning: Spoilers
A middle-aged woman is walking alone and feeling lonely. When she gets on a train, she meets a man who is seeking a girlfriend. I like the first part of this film, the woman walking alone and looking at a couple. It empathizes loneliness of the woman perfectly even though she does not say anything. Also, I'm impressed that this film clearly shows the woman is a protagonist of the movie although she did not have a dialogue while a man has a dialogue almost the entire film. But I guess most of us can sympathize with the woman's feeling over the man because we can see how she feels more than him by her reaction. I think the entire film is well done including the story, camera work, and casting. The audience will be surprised by the ending. I wonder whether it was the woman's fault or man's one. She might be responsible for herself sticking in the idea of love or becoming desperate for a boyfriend. She should have been more careful not to be grabbed a chance immediately. The man also might be responsible for what he has been done. He did not try to deceive her into believing what he says, but this is a good lesson that you should not do things so confusing when it comes to relationship things. Which they sympathize with is up to the audience, which makes the story interesting. Overall, I really enjoyed watching this film.

Sad ending
m28l17d28 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In this short movie, there is a lady, who is not in romantic relationships for a while and looking for the one for her. The story is happening on a train in France. After she passes by the couple in the station, she gets on the train. Her face is not bright and seems hopeless. A man gets on the train at the last minute, and he starts talking about "love." He is looking for a woman to date, and talking about his life, his salary, what he values and so on. Another man on the train makes fun of the man, but he did not stop. The woman's face gets brighter as she listens to his story. The man says that "if you would like to date me, please get off at the next station." The woman gets off the train with a happy feeling, but the man tells her that it is a performance, maybe to get money. This movie gives a shocking ending, and I liked it. I can see how the woman's emotion changes even though she does not say any words. The plot is straightforward but unpredictable, so it is interesting.

Excellent way to use short time
craftholic19992 March 2019
The whole scenes of this film is take place at the train. One man gathers the attention by other passengers because he give a speech with loud voice to search the female who can share his romantic ideas. Most of people are laghed by his romantic idea but one lonely woman is moved by his word. This is very good way to make the short film I think. In other words, the director of this film is good to use time. I can not believe that this short film takes only about 4 minutes. It was really impressed story to me. In addition, there are some words that I can not understand in the film but from the act of characters, I can understand the story easily. Many people would enjoy this short film. If you have a spare time, you should watch this short film and do not miss the last scene of the film.

An emotional ride
Jirorian4 June 2018
Quite literally an emotional ride, "I'll Wait for the Next One" offers the promise of a fateful encounter only to be challenged abruptly by a surprise ending. The surprise works because our feelings are channeled through the eyes of the woman, whom in becoming the dupe of the male perpetrator forces viewers along to share in her struggle. The film thus raises many questions regarding the nature of the conflict it depicts: why is it not surprising that the man is the perpetrator and the woman is the dupe? Why are we drawn to believe the man's story, and what does his final action reveal about the nature of men as societal beings? Is the ending a fault of the woman or of the man? If the woman is at fault, do women need to just be more careful in an overtly oppressive society? Or if the man is at fault, does he need to be more considerate of the extent to which his actions inflict damage upon society? The depiction is that both the woman and the man are at the extreme ends of their respective depths of capacity for emotional sentiment, and it is a very crude depiction that does little to progress away from the repression inherent to patriarchal societies. However, the responsibility to answer the questions posed by the film lies in the viewer, and as a result so too does the responsibility to make any changes in the real world away from what we see on screen.

Interesting film
pinefgsgsu24 December 2021
"I'll Wait For The Next One" is a French short comedy drama film. It was made in 2002. A woman walks to the station with a lonely expression. When she gets on the train, a man also gets on it to introduce himself and says that he is looking for love to passengers in a loud voice. The woman has a puzzled look at first, but she comes to be interested in what he says and sympathize with his view of love. It is a story with a surprise ending. The title implies that the women waits for her destiny and I think she is so bored in her daily life so that she wants to believe the one and fate. However, I suppose the man makes fun of the women who are looking for partners seriously and I don't think it is a funny joke. I sympathized with her in the film. Furthermore, I have empathic embarrassment to watch this film. I believe people who care what other people think much would feel this embarrassment. I think the film is worth watching because it gives the audience the lesson that there some things are too good to be true.

Not feeling happy by watching it.
rm-0600731 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you are of European descent, you will probably like this film because of the twist and turn. However, I thought this movie would not be accepted in my country, where movies that do not affect the viewer in a bad way are praised. As an Asian, my pity for the main female character prevails over the surprise of the twist. The foreign people I saw the movie with said the twist was wonderful. However, having watched only Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dramas and movies, I did not feel comfortable watching this movie in which a woman is humiliated in front of many people and laughed at. I think it is difficult to enjoy this movie if you do not make an effort to understand other cultures, because it is a movie that incorporates the unique culture of France.

I think this film is a film that people will like or dislike intensely.

Surprising Ending
misa-4487220 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"J'attendrai le suivant..."is a 2002 French short film.

The story begins with a lonely woman walking home alone. On her way home, she sees a couple hugging on the escalator. Later, she rides the subway, and a man begins to talk. He says he is looking for someone to be his partner because he is tired of living alone and his boring life. He has a little discussion with another passenger in the middle of this and says that the woman who is interested in him should get off at the next stop.

I do not like this movie very much, because it was difficult for me to understand what the film wanted to express at one viewing. At first I did not understand why the man did not get off with the woman at the train stop. The truth is that the man was talking to the other passengers but it was all a joke. The main female character also believed the man's words. That is very pitiful. It was difficult for me to understand what this film really wants to tell people. Thus, I did not like this movie.

Nice short film
ganpon27 July 2021
This is a story about a woman who wants to find true love. She finds a man on the subway who announces that he is looking for a woman. He seems to be a nice funny guy, and he asks anyone who's interested to get off at the next station. The woman looks interested in the man. We can read the change of feelings of the woman in this film. The woman expresses the character's feelings well though she doesn't have any dialog in the film. She only has the facial expression to express her feelings, but it isn't difficult to understand. The main character who has the dialog is the man who is looking for the woman. He speaks so emotionally that all people in the train must have believed that he is really searching for true love. What was surprising was my impression of him changed completely in the very last scene. The film is very short, but the story and character's feelings are well expressed in a simple way. In that sense, I think this it is well created as a short film.

Fateful moment in the train...?!
maoenjoyhappy23 July 2017
A lonely woman who greatly longs for true love meets a stranger at the metro in Paris. He asks single women in the metro who has the same way of thinking of love for getting off at the next station. Then…what becomes of her love, getting off or not?

Even though the film is about 4 minutes long, this leaves us emotion sympathized with her. Interestingly, the single lady is a main character, not the man who tries to attract the single women in the train. However, she mentions none of the words, which means her feelings are expressed visually. In particular, at the beginning of the film, she bears watching a couple on the escalator. This shows us that she seeks for love. The technique is highly respected.

The ending of this film is beyond expectation and makes audience feel to follow the story more.

Second-hand embarrassment served
Gospel9722 June 2018
A lonely woman goes on about her life until one day, the ride on her usual train takes an unexpected turn, changing her life in the mere span of a few minutes.

It's a well-crafted short, from start to finish. The actress does a magnificient job showing the sad, lonely side of the character, which makes the audience take a liking on her earlier in the short. There's humour in it too, and the cadence of the dialogue makes the audience follow the slow but steady flow of the plot.

The simplicity and familiarity of the setting (coming home from work, getting on the train to share your personal space with strangers for as long as the ride lasts) adds to showing how easily events in the short could happen in real life. How humans can be cruel without meaning to, and how they can also be very naive when hope is an option.

The naiveness of the woman, her hope to finally stop feeling lonely, is what gives this short that special touch.

well-acted short film with heart wrecking turn
mvrv335 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Philippe Orreindy's "J'attendrai le suivant..." was deservingly nominated for best short film at the Academy Awards in 2002. A woman is getting on the subway. There she witnesses the speech of a man who appears to be looking for love. While most passengers on the train laugh at him, it becomes obvious to the audience that the protagonist seems to be infatuated by the man's words. He asks those who seek to find love just like himself to get off the metro at the next station. Our main character gathers all her courage and decides to exit the train. Interestingly, throughout the entire film, the main character does not say a single word. Even so, her emotions are conveyed convincingly through her facial expressions. The ending is heart wrecking. Standing on the platform full of hope she looks at the man who strangely did not leave the train. It is only then she realizes that he was performing a sketch to earn a little money. The lonely protagonist appears to be the only one who is fooled by the man's act. What makes the ending even more devastating is the man's pitying expression when he tells the woman the truth. An outstanding short film!

Interesting but a bit cruel story
sumigu23 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"I'll wait for the next one" is a dark comedy-drama story produced in France. It is a little sad, but funny. The story begins in an unusual way, with a man on a train suddenly starting to introduce himself. The main character, a woman who seems to be single, listens to him and finds him attractive, so she gets off at the station he tells her to. When I first watched this story, I was a little sad by the thought of being in that woman's shoes. But this is a fiction. The charm of this story is that it keeps the viewer guessing, and then the ending has a surprise twist. As I wrote earlier, it was sad to think about the woman, but the unexpected turn of events is very exciting. Also, as I'm a Japanese, I was able to know that this kind of comedy exists in France. The point that the ending is unpredictable until the final scene draws the viewer into the film. So, this film is worth watching. However, it is important to think and enjoy it diligently as a fiction.

There is no telling what may happen next.

'I'll Wait for the Next One' is a drama about a woman who is looking for wonderful love and living lonely days. One day, she takes a train, and she finds a man who is also looking for a nice partner. He calls out to all the passengers in a loud voice, so she listens to his speech. He speaks about the type of woman he wants to date. While listening to the speech, she is getting serious. Then he suggests if someone gets interested in this speech, get off the train at the next station. The main part of this drama is his speech. We can't stop paying attention to his sudden speech. Also, a man interrupts the speech. This event provides a feeling of tension. This is a great short in only 5 minutes and is well worth seeing. After watching this movie, everyone feels surprised and it makes us think about different things.

Difficult ending
gutti-211521 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'll Wait for the Next One is a short French film, released in 2002. The director is Philippe Orreindy. Most of the movie's setting is on a metro train.

A woman, the metro's passenger, gets on the train. Suddenly, a man, one of the passengers, says he wants a girlfriend. He explains his life and work. Also, the other man joins his narrative. After that, he tells the women that if you are ok, you should get off the train and talk with him on the platform.

In this movie, I focus on the woman and title. Firstly, she doesn't say anything in the film. Viewers have to know her feelings through his emotion. Why doesn't she speak in the movie? In my opinion, she is recognized as one of the passengers. The main character isn't her but all passengers. Secondly, this movie's title represents a viewpoint of a woman's perspective. She watches a couple which is on the escalator. She clearly thinks she wants to be in a relationship though the scene.

Made me laugh

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a film of a woman. She seems wanting love from someone, and one day she takes subway. In the subway, she finds a man was making speech to find his partner. He sincerely offers women around him to give him love, and the woman starts to have interest on him.

Before watching this film, I didn't know that performances can be seen in subway in other countries. In my home country, people are very indifferent to others and we cannot see those. I prefer having this kind of culture. If you know this culture, I think you will find what is going on in this film and can laugh. Still some of you will understand what happens at the end, this is funny because characters' face and sheriffs are funny after knowing what happens next. Some of you might see this as making fun of the woman, though, I just like this film.

A movie which has a consistency to the story and direction
e4keimax29 November 2021
'I'll Wait For The Next One' is a short comedy and romance movie directed by Philippe Orreindy in 2002. A woman, who is single and looking for true love, meets a single man who also wants to get married, on the subway. Although this movie is very short, there is a consistency to the story from the beginning to the end, because both of them hope for love and marriage. Therefore, this movie has a simple and clear plot that a character wants something. Moreover, there is visual storytelling in this movie. For instance, there is a clue that the woman is single. When a man speaking on the subway says "There are five million single women in France, and where are they?" she looks away from him for a moment. It means that she is a single person and one of the five million women. On the whole, this movie makes it easy for the audience to understand from the perspective of the direction, so it is worth seeing.

Well made, but man did this make me feel depressed!!!
planktonrules8 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
If you are totally jaded about love and think that dating stinks and you'd rather spend your time sitting around and complaining how love is a crock, then I have found the perfect film for you! JÁTTENDRAI LE SUIVANT is what at first appears to be a sweet and romantic little film--one that will capture your heart and make you smile. Then, in a clever but gut-wrenching twist, you're left feeling miserable and it's all for naught! Traditionally, the French are seen as a people who know all about love---but judging purely by this film, this isn't necessarily the case.

For romantics out there, and I am one, this isn't the type of film that ultimately satisfies. It reminds me of THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO because that film also seems to have a rather cynical and sad outlook on love. It's well made, but man is it a downer.

Hmmm,...now that I think about it, at least the film did get a reaction from me--and there is something to be said about a film that provokes such a strong reaction.

What is the true love?
nobaryuta17 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The short film named "I'll wait for the next one" is a romance and satire story.

In this short film, a middle-aged woman who never speaks falls in love with a man. At first, going down an escalator, this woman sees a hot couple hugging and kissing and feels lonely. After getting on the train, she finds a man who speaks loud and clear to others. What he says is that he seeks a woman who can reach a "true love" with him, and also asks anyone interested to get off the train if she understands his thinking.

In my opinion, what the filmmakers wants to say in this film is that the true love cannot be easily and instantly completed. It is impossible to trust and understand about anyone in just a few minutes. I think that nurturing true love takes much time, not an instant of time. Hence, when a middle-aged woman trusts someone in a moment, it seems to be little bit ridiculous.

I would recommend this for those who seeks true love or feels lonely. This film shows the difficulty of true love.

Warning: Spoilers
Who has never been inside a subway or train coming back from a tiring day of work and wanting only to get some sleep but has been kept awaken by the noisy of someone doing something that requires the attention of all the "Mr and Ms" inside of it. In this movie we see how a simple case of this can really make the day of a person even worse. On a normal day a man inside the subway attracts the attention of everyone inside so that he could find any woman that still believe in love and was willing to give it a chance. A small and a little touching speech later we are sure that this story shall have a loving ending to renovate our faith in love. But, as we see it was not meant to happen as we thought and it leave us at the end with really hateful ideas about a continuation for this movie. As we say back in Brazil, "We desire to our enemies a long life so they can see our victory".

Warning: Spoilers
I'll Wait for The Next One' is a French short film directed by Philippe Orriendy. A single woman, who longs for romantic love, gets on the train. Then there is a single man who says he is looking for a woman, and he starts his story. At first, I took his action to mean he is such a brave person that he openly calls for a new girlfriend. But it's actually different, so I was surprised. Also, the conversation between the two men was amusing. The contrast between a gently responding man and the other roughly complaining man was striking, and I could really understand the personality of each character. However, for me, I found their performance was not well-accepted. In my opinion, shows which can lead to audience getting disappointed are not good ones. Actually, the woman unfortunately fell in the situation and I imagine she would get embarrassed or disappointed later. The ending was contrary to my idea, so it's not my cup of tea.
