The turn-of-the-century illusionist Harry Houdini is still very popular in U.S. – Aaron Sorkin and Hugh Jackman are collaborating on a Broadway musical about him for the 2013-2014 season.
Based on ‘The Secret Life of Houdini, The Making of America’s First Superhero’ by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, the Summit/Lionsgate project is one of several Houdini films currently in development around Hollywood: DreamWorks acquired a spec script from Changeling writer J. Michael Straczynski called Voices From The Dead, and Sony enlisted the upcoming The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence to helm an untitled Houdini-centered biopic.
Joe Wright has made a home in costume drama such as Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and most recently Anna Karenina, so it’s no surprise that a biography called The Secret Life of Houdini has attracted the interest of Golden Globe nominee.
Wright may not quite be an A-list director at this current juncture in the game,...

This is semi-ironic: After Gary Ross left the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire — possibly in an effort to “reinvent himself with each new film” — Francis Lawrence was soon brought aboard. And, for months, the I Am Legend helmer had already been trying to develop a new directorial project of his own — a Houdini biopic being chief among them. So, what will Gary Ross probably follow-up The Hunger Games with?
Well, not the same project. Lawrence had been working with Scott Frank on an untitled romantic drama, but THR says Ross is in talks to adapt William Kalush and Larry Sloman‘s semi-biography, The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. In this book, it’s alleged that the world’s greatest magician worked for British intelligence, the American secret service, and also acted as a police informant — even though none of these things have ever been concretely proven.

Back in April 2009 we had a little chat about The Secret Life of Houdini.
By now you know that Summit Entertainment has secured the rights to William Kalush’s book The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero about legendary magician Harry Houdini, and that they’re planning to make it an action movie.
The project has long been in the works, with Jeff Nathanson writing the script, but now it looks that Summit has Noah Oppenheim writing a draft.
So, no wonder that guys at Amazon describe this book by saying:
“Handcuff King. Escape Artist. International Superstar. Since his death eighty years ago, Harry Houdini’s life has been chronicled in books, in film, and on television. Now, in this groundbreaking biography, renowned magic expert William Kalush and bestselling writer Larry Sloman team up to find the man behind the myth.
Drawing from millions of pages of research,...

Harry Houdini is presenting a second act. Summit Entertainment has hired scriptwriter Noah Oppenheim (“Jackie”) to write the adaptation the biography of Houdini. It will be based on the book called “The Secret Life of Houdini, The Making of America’s First Superhero,” by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. The biography looked into the life of Houdini as the Handcuff King, Escape Artist and International Superstar. Through the authors’ research, the authors also wrote the life of Houdini as a British spy and assisted with the police to infiltrate the world of fake spirit mediums. It will be the second Houdini film announced this month. Earlier this month, DreamWorks acquired “Voices from the Dead,” a script based on the real-life friendship of Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Summit film will not be a biopic, but an action thriller with a character who is...
